Hey Coworkers!
Happy harvest! By now the kids have found all of the
tricks and treats and us parents are recovering from their sugar
highs. The Halloween party was a wild success thanks to our
coworkers and our Activities/Sports chairman Cathy Fox. All of
the kids had a spooktacular time playing games and making
cookies with Anna “Granna” Kent!
Our community service Sunday game party was a suc-
cess and helped raise some funds towards our 40 food baskets
and underprivileged children’s party. Our Mooseheart/
Moosehaven committee collected money for our twin cities
Christmas in October during committee activity night and
coworkers made 500 holiday cards to send to our children and
seniors. We finished our Zumba sessions and survived =) Com-
munity service chairman Angela Acosta and her committee host-
ed a successful jitney and game party. Membership Retention
chairman Kathy Saunders held a very successful raffle for a 24”
LED TV. Ladies, let me take the opportunity to thank each of
you for your donations to these and all of our causes. Without
your generous donations of food, prizes, and time, we could not
be successful. Our October coworker of the month was Jessica
Hedhli, who organizes our annual craft and vendor fair, always
assists with bunco and bingo and never says no when asked to
help out with chapter. Thank you Jessica for your help!
Coworkers, I could not be more proud of the community
service our chapter is doing this year. Recorder Denise Stremmet
led our chapter’s Strides Against Breast Cancer team on their 2nd
annual walk at Mt. Trashmore on October 21st. Together with
the Moosestock event and donations from JGR Jeannette Logan’s
Thriller team dance at the adult Halloween party, the team placed
3rd for the entire event with over $5,400 raised to fight against
breast cancer and raise awareness. Coworker and survivor
Michele Hoffman was the 10th highest fundraising participant for
the entire event. Congratulations ladies on a job well done! On
October 29th we held a walk with the South Norfolk chapter to
benefit Mooseheart’s Holiday Lights 5K. No rain dampens our
mood—we just learn to dance in it like fools and have fun de-
spite the weather =) On November 26th we will hold a special
fundraiser for For Kids, a children’s advocacy group that assists
with victims of child abuse. We will hold one special Zumba
session for 1.5 hours at a cost of $10.00. Please come out and
support this, even if you end up just watching us sparkle. It’s for
a great cause – the kids! We are entering one of the busiest times
of our chapter year for community service, and as such we are
still collecting canned and nonperishable foods for our Thanks-
giving and Christmas food baskets.
My brothers and Coworkers, Fall is here and the Holidays are coming. Lets everybody enjoy them and may they be safe for all, Don't forget that Flu Shot / nothing worse then going thru these Holidays sick . We have alot on the table as far as the Activities go. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, Did I say Christ-mas Yahoo !!! Need some Christmas Money , Try Our Queen of Hearts over $9,000.00 / 50/50 Over $100.00 We also sell 911 Tuesday nights are getting the best we have ever seen.
Speaking of Tuesday Nights the men are moving over to the Annex (Little Moose) for the Monthly Meetings/ Please try to attend the meetings so you know what’s going around the Lodge. I hear that somebody says ( I wished I had known that I would have COME) Are you one of these members???? We have just finished painting and cleaning up and it Looks Awe-some, and very nice to rent out for a Family Function ( See our Club Manager Taunya Ayers)
We could use some help at Bingo/ Its another way we keep these DOORS open. We even Feed You, there are many things you can do there behind the desk / selling pull tabs etc. Please, please come out and HELP I have been doing this for over 6 years, alt-hough my feet hurt I enjoy talking to our Patrons and I will tell you the Truth some are very nice People / and yes there are some people that can get angry. Its all good / just brush it off and move on, So Please come out and support your Lodge.
Thanks Brother Peck Seader and Crew for the outstanding Job on the Children’s Playground / WOW- AWESOME! What a nice place to take the kids. There’s even a Train ( Thanks Carlos) So come out take a look and Enjoy.
The Tower of Help is in the Game Room This is for the Hurricane Fund The Lodge has back up this Relief with $1,000.00 . Please could you help. We are again very Lucky to dodge another year of Mother Nature. So dig in your pockets and Give and be Very Thankful That we were Hurricane Free this Year.
Am Half way through my year as your Gov. And have Learned alot and hope that my services to you All have been better for the Lodge. If for any reason you need to know something or like to see a change / Come to me or put a note / letter of your needs or changes / Yes this is Your Lodge and your opinion counts.
To my Coworkers, I understand that You Ladies Were in the Top Level for raising Money for Breast Cancer Walk, So proud, very proud of you. Keep up the good work, You La-dies "Rock"
We did our first "Moosestock" this year and Jimmy Balkcom and Crew did a Great Job. From Selling Shirts to arrange-ments. Thank You also J Lo. Yes Over $3,000.00 SO PROUD of the Ladies Chapter and thanks for the Tables for the Play-ground. Let's put 898 and 966 on the Map Your #1 in my book
Thank you Ed "Doc" Neathery

All active Moose and WOTM Members welcome.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ALL LOOM
MEMBERS AND CO-WORKERS WHO HAVE
NOVEMBER BIRTHDAYS
On November 2nd our Higher Degree committee will
be hosting the College of Regents chapter activity night and
some of our collegians will be receiving honors. Any dona-
tions of refreshments are greatly appreciated. Higher Degree
Chairman Julia Sayers will be holding a raffle for a large Vera
Bradley tote with several surprises inside (gift cards, etc).
Tickets are 3 for $1.00 or 20 for $5.00 and the ticket will be
drawn on December 7th. On November 9th, the board of offic-
ers will host the jitney and game party with turkey or ham and
sides. The cost is $10.00 and includes the meal and 3 bingo
cards. You can also purchase just the meal for $6.00, and addi-
tional bingo cards are available for $2.00 each. Please assist if
possible with prizes or side dishes. On November 12th at 3pm
we will host another paint party and we hope you can join us
for a holiday themed painting. Cost is $30.00 and you get to
paint your own masterpiece. Last time we had 16 coworkers
participate….this time we would love to have 20! On Novem-
ber 19th at 9am we will assemble our Thanksgiving food bas-
kets. Please come help us and the Boy Scouts with this en-
deavor. It will warm your heart to help others. We will have a
bake sale in the bingo foyer on December 1st. Donations of
baked goods and volunteers to cut and plate goods are greatly
appreciated. Remember, coworkers, the success of our events
depends on each of us donating time, side dishes, refreshments,
or prizes. Please help if and when you can with these endeav-
ors. Throughout November, we will continue to collect new
and used shoes for our shoe drive. All proceeds from the shoes
will go toward our chapter’s community service efforts. Please
check your closets and ask your friends, family members, and
neighbors to check their closets to donate any unwanted or
unneeded shoes to this effort. We need to have 2,500 pairs of
shoes and at the time of printing we have about 700 pairs col-
lected with one month left to meet our goal. We can do this
coworkers!
Coworkers, please be reminded to check the arrearage list and
offer any help you can in contacting members in arrears.
Membership retention is the responsibility of the entire chap-
ter, not any one coworker, officer, or chairman. We have been
doing an excellent job of getting new applications in and have
maintained a streak of at least one application for every meet-
ing this year, but we need to make sure we retain the members
we have as well. Please check your own membership cards
and make sure we don’t let our children or seniors down. It’s
not about us---it’s about them and ensuring that their futures
are secure.
For those of us who love crafts and love to shop, our 3rd annual
Craft and Vendor Fair will be held on Saturday, November 4th
from 11am to 5pm in the back hall. One nonperishable food
item per person gets you in to shop til you drop from local
crafters and vendors. On Saturday, November 4th, we will
have the Chesapeake Regional Healthcare’s Mobile Mammog-
raphy Unit at the lodge. Appointments are available from
10am to 4pm in 20 minute increments, and they accept all in-
surances. If you do not have insurance, they will work with
you to make sure you get this vital screening. Scary statistics
don’t lie, and the city of Portsmouth has one of the highest
diagnosis rates in the country for advanced stage breast cancer.
Get this taken care of with your friends---you will thank each
other for years to come. You can schedule online at
www.chesapeakemammo.com by selecting Portsmouth Moose
and the desired time slot. You can shop when you’re done by
coming right inside to the craft and vendor fair---what’s not to
love?!
As always, your board is here to listen to your ideas and
suggestions. Please see a board member or call us if you have any
ideas for how to make us better. We want to make our lodge and
chapter family friendly and host events that will attract as many
coworkers as possible for all to enjoy.

MEMBERSHIP AND RETENTION
Let’s not forget that we need to increase our membership for the
coming year. The lodge members have voted to lower the joining
fee and renewal fee to only $40.00. Plus remember that active duty
Military and First responders can join for free. The Lodge has a new
campaign were you can win up to $25 in Moosebucks for every new
member you sponsor. How much easier can it be?
VETERANS
Are you a US Military Veteran? You can be recognized
by your Moose Brothers by signing up for the Valued
Veterans program. It’s very easy to do. Go to Moose
International website, scroll down on the right to
‘RESOURCES’, click on ‘My Membership Record’,
sign in and in the Membership box on the top right
check the box next to ‘Valued Veteran’. In a week or so,
you will receive a new membership card identifying you
as a ‘VALUED VETERAN’
Moose898Dance

enjoy the music? Stop by our Moose 898 Dance class. We
meet on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month. Our clas-
ses for this month are scheduled for NOV. 1st and
15th. Starting at 7pm we welcome dancers of ALL skill lev-
els to come, have a good time and learn a few dance moves.
It isn’t the dance that is important it is the friends you
make while learning. Looking forward to seeing you on the
dance floor.
Friday Night Socials
The Portsmouth Moose provides FREE Entertainment
(Band/DJ) on Friday Nights (see Leader, calendar or Face-
book page - Portsmouth Moose Lodge 898) for members
and guest (potential members) entertainment at least 3
times a month. Come request, listen, and dance to your fa-
vorite music, from “golden oldies” to today’s “top hits” and
everything in between. The bands are awesome and the
DJ’s will be happy to play your request, then get out on the
dance floor. The more dance styles the better – FREE-
STYLE, SHAG, SWING, TWO-STEP, SALSA, LINE,
and MANY MORE.

having a great time. It is great way to meet some of the
best people you will ever meet!

STRIDES AGAINST BREAST CANCER;
On October 21st the WOTM 966 team participated in the Mak-
ing Strides Hampton Roads Against Breast Cancer 5K at Mount
Trashmore. Our team was small this year but just as effective as
last year. They labeled us the Crusader Crew, which I believe is
quite fitting. The team proudly held their own and were ranked
3rd out of 228 teams in monetary donations competing against
big names like Hall Automotive and Dollar Tree. Our team
also had a top 10 participant out of 1388 participants. Way to
go Michele Hoffman! Not too shabby for such a small team!
None of this though was even possible without everyone’s hard
work, generosity and kind hearts. So many dedicated them-
selves to fundraisers giving their all for such a great cause
Breast cancer effects so many that are dear to us. So if you cut
hair, made a donation, bought a bracelet or a tee-shirt, came out
for Moosestock, volunteered your time in anyway, Thank you
Thank you Thank you! I’d also like to thank the LOOM and
Chapter for all their support at these fundraising events. I’d es-
pecially like to give a heartfelt thanks to those fundraising
Chairmen who went the extra mile, who worked laboriously,
dedicating their time and talents to help make this fundraising
event so successful, Kiri Smith (Bald-a-Thon) Jimmy Balkcom
(Moosestock) and Jeannette Logan (Thiller). Your commitment
and dedication brings us that much closer to finding a cure.

The Scouts enjoyed a great bike ride on the trails at
Indian River Park, Sat Oct 21. There were lots of good-
ies and crazy costumes at their Halloween Party. Scout-
master Dennis Bear Short looking good in a dress and
punk-rocker hair! Troop 215 welcomes two new Scouts
(exchange students) from Italy and Sweden… Marco
and Louis. They are attending I.C. Norcum High School
for 2017-2018 school year. Pack 215 has been busy
selling their famous POPCORN. Check with our leaders
to see if we have any left! Going fast!! The pack is
growing… four new families. Now is the time to join
our Pack and Troop… Fall Roundup. Cubbies had a
blast at their Halloween Party. Thanks to all who took
charge of this awesome event! Thanks to the Lodge and
Taunya for donating the yummy chicken nuggets and
French fries. Thank you to the L.O.O.M. #898 and
W.O.T.M. #966 for your continued support to our
scouting program.
