Term 3 kicked off with a bang as Gleeson College’s production of ‘Footloose The Musical’ rocked the stage and wowed audiences in Week 1! With a cast of 60
students, a super talented Band and a slick Back Stage Crew, the performances were met with rave reviews, once again showcasing the amazing talent we have
here at Gleeson College. Congratulations to all involved!

A WORD FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL
Welcome to Term 3…and hasn’t it been a dynamic start to the term! Thus far this term: we witnessed another amazing Gleeson College musical theatre production in ‘Footloose’, winter sports and state knock-out sports have recommenced, we have had our Academic Assembly, Year 12 Parent Student Teacher evening, start of term College Mass, Subject Selection Evening, Year 10 Dance classes and Year 11 Semi Formal happens tonight. And all the while, our core business of teaching and learning continues in earnest.
Subject Selections for 2020Last week our Year 11 and 10 students attended subject choice assemblies where they received information about the process for selecting subjects for 2020. They will select their subjects with the assistance of their teachers, and with their families at home, and then attend counselling days with their parents to finalise the subject choices.
Families and friends of our Year 10, 11 and 12 students attended our annual Subject Information Evening on Wednesday this week. The main tertiary education providers were present along with Gleeson College staff presenting information about subjects available at the College and the One+ Campus.
Year 12 students and their parents attended a SATAC Information Session where they were introduced to the process of selecting University and TAFE courses for 2020. It will not be long before they finish formal lessons and start preparing for examinations. Only nine teaching weeks left!
Student Leadership 2019/20This week also saw the commencement of the Leadership Election process for our new Student Leaders whose leadership tenure runs from the beginning of Term 4 to the end of Term 3 in the following year. This is an arduous process and a very competitive one, which ultimately sees a great group of students step up to serve their community through their leadership skills and vision.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank most sincerely the current Student Leaders for the fantastic work they have done and especially for the way in which they have worked together so harmoniously. They have set a very high standard for future leaders to follow.
Scoliosis AustraliaJuly and August are the months when it is recommended that all girls and boys in Years 7 to 9 participate in the National Self-Detection Program for Scoliosis (curvature of the spine). This can be done by downloading the Self-Detection Brochure from the Scoliosis Australia home page at the web address www.scoliosis-australia.org/scoliosis/self_detection_prog.html
Feast Day of Mary of the Cross MacKillopOn Wednesday this week we celebrated our College Mass in honour of Mary MacKillop whose feast day was on Thursday, 8 August.
Mary and the Sisters of St Joseph were committed to serving the poor – to going to where the need was and living amongst those in need. Mary faced fierce opposition throughout her life. In the face of trial, Mary was a model of forgiveness, insisting no ill be spoken of those who wronged her, while also remaining resolute in her convictions. Mary was remarkable as a strong
female leader in 19th century Australia. Education in this country is what it is today thanks to her dedication and determination.
Ever generous God,You inspired Saint Mary MacKillop
To live her life faithful to the Gospel of Jesus Christ
and constant in bringing hope and encouragement
to those who were disheartened, lonely or needy.
With confidence in your generous providence
and through the intercession of Saint Mary MacKillop
We ask that you grant our requests. We ask that our faith and hope be fired
afresh by the Holy Spiritso that we too, like Mary MacKillop,
may live with courage, trust and openness.
Ever generous God hear our prayer.
Together we pray, with one heart. Amen
Joe Corbo,Deputy Principal

SUBJECT SELECTION EVENING + SATAC INFORMATION SESSION 2019Plenty of families took advantage of the information available from our annual Subject Information
Evening held on Wednesday. Faculty coordinators and teaching staff set
up subject information booths where students and their families were able to seek more information about pre-requisites, subject pathways and the types of assessment tasks relevant to each course. As well as teaching staff, representatives from our major
universities were able to answer questions relating to the courses they
offer.
Information sessions on the South Australian Certificate of Education
(SACE) were provided to students and families of Year 10 and 11 students.
The sessions explained what the requirements are for achieving a
SACE certificate, and how this is used to determine an Australian Tertiary
Admissions Rank, commonly known as an ATAR. If students want to pursue a tertiary qualification through obtaining an ATAR, copies of the SATAC Guide
to Undergraduate Courses publication are made available for students to find information on each university course and the current ATAR scores for entry into each course. The SATAC guide and SATAC Tertiary Entrance guide can also be downloaded using the
following link > https://www.satac.edu.au/satac-publications
The application process of applying through SATAC for tertiary courses
was also presented on the night. The information session was relevant for Year 12 students who are thinking
about applying for courses through TAFESA and the eight main universities
from South Australia and Northern Territory. Registration is now open
online through the SATAC website for students to enter up to six preferences.
Students have until the 28th September to enter their preferences
and pay the $40 application fee.Students in Year 10 and 11 are
selecting their subject preferences for 2020 later this week. As a result, there will be a STUDENT FREE DAY for Year
10 students on Thursday 15 August and a STUDENT FREE DAY for Year 11
students on Friday 16 August.
Subject selections will continue over the next two weeks when Year 7, 8 and 9 students will attend an information session on subject selections through
Edval online. Students’ individual subject selection code letters will be provided to students at this
information session.
If you child requires further information on the requirements for future
careers including VET pathways or tertiary study, they are able to make an appointment with Ms Sue Smith (SACE Coordinator), Mr Daw (VET
Coordinator), House Coordinators and College Counsellors.

ONE+ TALENT SHOW > Gleeson Peformers Light Up the Stage!
In its third year, the One+ Campus Talent Show was expanded to include both Visual Arts and Performing Arts
in 2019, offering a vibrant showcase of talent from all three Campus schools!
Each school had the opportunity to enter four acts in the Talent Show,
which was held in Pedare Chapel on Tuesday 30 July.
Gleeson College was well represented by the following Performing Arts
students >
• Lachlan Searles (9 HMDIT) performing an original song, “Twenty Four Seven”.
• Jaxon Joy (9 MMWIG) singing “Sante Fe” from the musical “Newsies”.
• Sarah McIver (10 DSVAU) & Ellen Welden (10 FSWES) choreographed a powerful dance piece centred around mental health, with Lifeline’s colours represented in their costumes, to Cold Play’s “Fix You”.
• Alicia Hay (7 ROG) & Tess Marusic (7 GLV) dancing to Pink’s “What About Us” in a devised piece about the ups and downs of friendship.
We also had many great Visual Art pieces from students in Years 7-11 on display on the night. Our GC

GLEESON STUDENTS HIT SCIENCE ALIVE! CAREERS DAY @ WAYVILLE
Science Alive! is a long-standing partner of National Science Week and participate as part of the event each
year. Gleeson College invited a group of interested students to attend the Careers Day hosted as part of the
event. Held on Friday 2 August, it was a preview of Science Alive! exclusively
for local schools. The day provides great opportunities for students to connect with people working, or
studying, in STEM fields, spark an interest in a STEM-related career, or
get more information of a field they are already passionate about.
The group attended Science shows and heard from young people
working as STEM professionals. There was strong representation from Health Science, ICT, Animal Science, Astronomy, Engineering, Defence,
Robotics, Electronics and more.
Our group of 24 were part of the 6000 South Australian students that attended the day. Students
were able to talk to representatives from Universities, STEM employers
and passionate Science-related organisations. They met young people
already forging ahead with STEM careers, careers one day they too may have. The group visited Jack Hutchins
(10 FSWES) who was an exhibitor on the day representing the Student
Robotics Club of South Australia. Jack provides a wonderful example of what excellence can result from true passion
in a field.
I hope the students were reminded that the opportunities ahead of them are diverse and abundant. Studying
STEM-based subjects allow students to develop critical thinking, be creative,
collaborate and communicate, all skills that are imperative for success in the
careers of the future.

YEAR 8 SCHOGIL LEARNING TEAM GETS ‘HANDS ON HISTORY’
To learn the difference between primary and secondary sources, in Week 1 students were involved in
studying a number of artefactsfrom the past.
Early last week I shared some family history of my uncles who served in World War 1 and 2, as well as some artefacts from my own life. On the
following Thursday, students brought in artefacts from three generations of their families. We set up a museum display and students moved around noting down information they could discover from the artefacts. This was followed by composing secondary sources based on the artefacts they
brought or studied.
The final reflection questions provided an opportunity for students to
demonstrate their learning and think about what things they might like
to keep safe, for future generations of their families. In this digital,
online world we live in, this will be a challenge for these students. Thanks to Mrs Kate Pill for joining us in the role of Assistant Curator for this engaging
activity.

YEAR 11 VISUAL ART > ‘A Box’ Sparks CreativityCreative thinking. A way of looking
at problems or situations from a fresh perspective that suggests unorthodox solutions (which may look unsettling
at first). Creative thinking can be stimulated both by an unstructured
process such as brainstorming, and by a structured process such as
lateral thinking.
The Year 11 Visual Art Class were introduced to a starter project to help
them think creatively with practical ideas. The intention of this mini project
was to challenge:• the meaning of a box;
• what the student’s concept of a box was;
• and what they know about this everyday object and to give scope to change the obvious with their
own interpretations.
This project is in preparation for Stage 2 Visual Art - Art, and provides
students insight to the concept of having full control and freedom
creatively with their thoughts and ideas. The interpretations were
creative, thought-provoking and challenged everyone.
Evelina Condo,Visual Arts Key Teacher Student Comments >
“This assignment focused on working and improving my creative thinking. This will be a very important skill for
me to use in my art for the rest of this year, as well as in Year 12. It will help
me come up with more interesting and out-of-the-box ideas.”
“This starter project has given us a head start and introduction into next
year’s course. This process ties into the rest of my Stage 1 and Stage 2 future
assignments as I think we are given lots of creative license to solve problems not only in Visual Art, but with other
subjects as well.”

YEAR 8&9 GIRLS KO FUTSAL TEAM BOOK STATE FINALS BERTHOn Monday 29 July, the Year 8&9 Girls
KO Futsal Team took part in the qualifying round of the Statewide Competition at
MARS Stadium. The top two teams from the qualifying round would progress to the
State Finals. We took a strong squad of players and
even though the majority of them were in Year 8, we were confident that if we played at our best we could qualify. We started the competition with a match against Glenunga International HS and after a tight first half
managed to go ahead through a well-taken goal by Molly Brooksby to make it 1-0 at half time. The team came out and played
some free-flowing futsal after half time and managed to add two more goals to the score line through Chelsea Papalia and another goal to Molly Brooksby to finish
the game as 3-0 winners. The second game saw us involved in a tight contest and after conceding early in the game we managed
to pull the score line back to 2-1 by the end of the first half, with goals to Mia
Zummo and Molly Brooksby. We continued playing positive football into the second
half and extended the score line with goals to Chelsea Papalia and a second to Molly Brooksby to record a 4-2 win. We entered
the third game against Blackwood HS knowing that we had qualified for the State Finals, but it was important to continue to play well in preparation. We struggled to score early on in the game with the score
resting at 0-0 for most of the first half. Just before the half time break the flood gates opened allowing us to score three quick goals with Summer Doman scoring two goals and Natalie Librandi getting one before half time. In the second half we
managed to add a few more goals thanks to close range finishes from Phoebe Doolin and Eliana Papalia to round out the game
deserving 5-1 winners.
The team consisting of Molly Brooksby, Chelsea Papalia, Summer Doman, Phoebe
Doolin, Piper Locke, Shaylee Hossen, Natalie Librandi, Mia Zummo and Eliana
Papalia all played well on the day. A special mention goes to Piper Locke who put up her hand to be goal keeper for the day in the absence of our regular keeper and did an excellent job. We now look forward to contesting in the State Finals in Week 10 of this term. Thank you to World Football
Program Specialist Coach Grace Abbey and Saturday Morning Girls Coach Erin Hossen for their support in coaching on the day.

GLEESON FIRST XI SOCCER BOYS INTOTHE GRAND FINAL!
On Wednesday, the Gleeson First XI Boys Soccer Team faced St Paul’s College in the Semi Final of the First XI Soccer League finals series at The Parks. The team had beaten Immanuel College the previous week by four
goals to nil in the Quarter Final (Div2) and were confident of progressing to the final.
Torrential rain meant the conditions were very tricky to deal with. Despite this, the players managed extremely well and we were able to successfully negotiate the conditions. The boys got off to a good start and managed to secure the first score on the board when David Mapstone scored after
rounding the goalkeeper and passing into an empty net to make it 1-0. Tom Ayre then finished neatly after a long ball caught out the St Paul’s defenders
to double the score. Ayre and Mapstone both scored another goal apiece to have us enter half time with a comfortable 4-0 lead.
The rain continued into the second half and so did the goals. Even with a pitch that was becoming more and more waterlogged, the boys played some
quality, possession-based football. Louis Ocego-Kingsley was particularly effective at playing out from the back and linking up with our midfielders.
Bailey Pannone came on at half-time and was able to score a hat-trick, capitalising on some neat midfield play and showing some good composure
in one-on-one situations with the goalkeeper. Harrison Conant capped off a good performance with a well-taken goal after being played through and
side-footing past the goal-keeper to round out the score with our eighth goal of the game.
High Performance Coach Daniel Mullen was extremely happy with the performance, noting that the boys were excellent in tough conditions. After
the comprehensive 8-0 win the team will be confident heading into their Grand Final clash at The Parks next week, and the opportunity of competing for and hopefully winning some
silverware.
