Every Visit Tells A Story Of

Life In Poverty

Dear Friends,

Every visit to the Sharing House tells a story. We know that ourneighbors who find themselves in dire circumstances come to theSharing House for your help— including food, clothing, fresh produce, utility and rent assistance. And alongside these essential resources youare able to give, you also provide one of the greatest sources ofgrace— compassionate and deep listening to real life stories. Our vol-unteers take the time to hear the hard struggles our neighbors endure.

Personal stories are transformative. To hear a story from one wholives in poverty in Transylvania County dispels myths about what ittruly is like struggling to make ends meet, to feed children while hold-ing down a low-paying job, and still hold together a sense of self-re-spect and dignity.

And the painful consequence of a difficult economy on ordinarypeople is a story that continues to play out across our state and county. While the nation continues to work toward recovery, record numbersof families and children left in its wake have not. Homelessness, foodinsecurity and jobless rates for those on the margins of poverty con-tinue to rise. Every day we hear another story about an unexpectedturn of events—a disabled car, an illness, a lost job, a divorce thatsends people into financial turmoil.

As we approach our 33rd anniversary in 2014, we can’t help butlook at some of the most hopeful stories from people you have servedin love. Our Annual Fund Report is such a collection of

transformative words that paint the pic-ture of overcoming hard circumstancesbecause you have chosen to be there intimes of need. God has called us to lookafter one another in love, and to see such astory playing out is nothing short of grace.

Every dollar given to this ministry alsotells a story. Many of our donors givefaithfully because they, too, remembertheir own story of struggle and how grate-ful they were when someone was able tostep in the gap and provide what wasneeded for life.

So if every visit tells a story, we’ve gotmany more chapters to fill until every per-son in Transylvania County has enough

food, clothes and housing to make for a better life. Let us togethermake alleviating poverty in our county a priority. Thank you for allyou have done and will continue to do in working towards alleviatingsuffering among those in poverty. Thank you for being a part of ourstory!

Grace and Peace,

Charles Miller, a local rancher, has always

tended to his horses, but his own many health

issues and trip after trip to Duke Hospital left

him living in the pasture with his horses in a

small camper with no hookups. He came to

Sharing House for food, produce, clothing and

financial assistance. We were able to help him

get into income-based affordable housing and

assist him with household goods to get him

out of the camper. He is hopeful and has such a

wonderful personality. He paid a visit to play a

guitar duet with our director and sang a hymn

with her.

New Directions

Self-RelianceI have been attempting to redefine the

word and concept of self-sufficiency.Self-sufficiency is a middle class valuewhich in general has no meaning to thefolks we serve. Total self-sufficiency isnot an achievable goal for our folks.

Words like self-reliance, independ-ence, autonomy, and self-determinationare more accurate descriptors. Of theseterms I have chosen self-reliance. What Ienvision and work for with participants isa greater sense of wholeness in all areasof life. This in turn translates into an im-proved quality of life.

In order to best define and reframe theconcept of self-sufficiency the following captures my vision of self-reliance: greater sense of control; greater freedom of choice; stabiliza-tion of health concerns; improved safety; minimized chronic crisis;balanced resources; legitimate support system; heightened sense ofhope=self-reliance=personal satisfaction with improved quality of life.

In 2013 these Sharing House volunteerslogged 16,776 hours of service, helpingour neighbors living in poverty by supply-ing them with food, clothing and financial assistance.

They also work behind the scenes, servingon our Board of Directors and performingdozens of tasks that support our work to ensure everyone in Transylvania has enoughto eat, is clothed and has a place to live.

Lose yourself in generous serviceand every day can be a most unusual day, a triumphant day,an abundantly rewarding day.

Alison and James came to the New Directions Program for help getting back into school so they canget living wage jobs. Their main goal is better care for their three young children.

The New Directions case manager helped them enroll at Blue Ridge Community College andapply for and receive financial assistance. James is actively working on a degree in auto mechanics andAlison’s aim is begin her studies as a physical therapist assistant in the fall. Alison related, “it looks likewe might really have a future!”

Jasmine has been struggling to make ends meet. Six months ago she gathered up her two teenage chil-dren and fled from an abusive husband. She was referred to New Directions through SAFE. She had CNAcertification and was able to secure employment at a local nursing home, but she is only scheduled towork a few shifts per week. She is having trouble paying her bills and providing for her children.

The New Directions case manager helped her file for child support from her estranged husband, and to begin the divorce process with the assistance of a local attorney. Because of her small job herfood stamps were drastically cut back to $15 per month. Sharing House has been able to help her getfood and clothing. She said that because there are people who care about her and the welfare of herfamily her depression has lessened and she has found hope.

Sarah struggled with depression for over 6 months, being unable to pay her bills while trying to raisethree teenagers.

In New Directions she got referrals to a counselor for therapy and a physician’s assistant for med-ication. Her depression has abated and she is now enrolled in the CNA course at Blue Ridge CommunityCollege. New Directions was able to help her get the scrubs, shoes and socks that she needed to beginher training. She even has a job lined up after the 6-week training course. She exclaimed to New Direc-tions case manager that “I know there are brighter days ahead for me!”

Charleen and her 13 year old son, Andrew, live in a single wide trailer that is in desperate need ofrepair. She bought it when she was an office manager for a local construction company where sheearned a living wage. She held that job for 10 years. The construction company – and her job – died inwith the economy in 2008. Soon her old car was so broken down that it could no longer be fixed. Next,a family of rodents took up residence in her son’s tiny bedroom. Charleen has worked hard to kill thepests, but they continue to multiply, forcing Andrew to sleep on the couch in the living area.

Charleen applied for jobs at most of the local businesses in town. She was called in for an inter-view with a local merchant and got the job. She was afraid that she would lose the opportunity becauseshe had no car, but she has been working hard with the New Directions program and recently qualifiedfor a Wheels-2-Work vehicle. She told the case manager that she surprised her son by by picking him upat school. They hugged each other and cried because now there was hope of money coming into thehousehold as well the future possibility of moving to a better home.

Ava’s Mommy takes care of her and herbrother, while Daddy works hard but does notearn a living wage. Their family needs help tomake it from month to month.

They rely on food stamps and Sharing Houseto make ends meet. Sharing House fills thegap left by food stamps, which only last threeweeks.

They get by, but fresh fruits and veggies arereally expensive, so fresh meat, produce andbaked goods donated to Sharing House byFood Lion really help.

As the children outgrow their clothes, visits toSharing House’s clothing room help a lot, too.Even Mommy and Daddy can get seasonalclothing there to stretch the family’s budget.

Ava recalls, “Last time we came here webrought toys so other kids have something toplay with.”
