Opportunities & Challenges

Why now?

The issue. Women and children matter. For the future

prosperity and stability of our world, women, children, and newborns must survive and thrive.

Progress is uneven; we have made important progress on MDGs 4 and 5, but there is still much to be done, especially for newborns.

Reductions in newborn mortality have stagnated, and newborn deaths account for a growing proportion of child deaths.

Globally, nearly 3 million babies die in the first month of life and 2.6 million babies are stillborn each year; while 287,000 women die annually from complications of pregnancy and childbirth.

More than 80 percent of all newborn deaths and stillbirths result from three preventable and treatable conditions: prematurity, childbirth complications, and newborn infections.

Why now?

The solution.

We need to address this overlooked area in a comprehensive way that includes interventions for women and children throughout the life cycle.

The health and wellbeing of women and their newborns and children are closely linked.

Solutions to ensure women, babies, and children not only survive but thrive exist.

Up to 75% of all newborn deaths can be prevented with low-cost, low-tech care, much of which also benefits women’s health.

Ensuring access to quality care around the time of birth to save women and newborns is critical.

Wider use of four low-cost products around birth could annually prevent 1 million deaths in the first month of life, particularly among sick and small newborns.

Why now?

The opportunity.

It’s time for all stakeholders to ACT.

We know what to do and we have a plan—the Every Newborn Action Plan.

We need greater support from governments and stakeholders to achieve a reduction of newborn mortality and quality care at the time of birth.

2014 is the year to elevate women’s and children’s health on the global agenda, and reinforce the importance of prioritizing newborns and stillbirths in the emerging post-2015 development agenda.

Framework for Progress

Every Newborn is a roadmap to save the lives of 3 million newborns (including preventing stillbirths) and women by 2025.

Every Newborn is a movement developed in response to country demand. It sets a clear vision for how to improve women’s and newborns’ health by 2025.

Every Newborn prioritizes focus on quality care around birth within existing national strategies and plans; it is not a new stand-alone plan.

Every Newborn moves forward the Secretary General’s Global Strategy for Women’s and Children’s Health by supporting government leadership and guiding the strengthening of maternal and newborn health components in existing strategies and plans.

Women’s and children’s health is a smart investment, particularly with specific attention to care at birth.

Every Newborn: An action plan to end preventable deaths

With an additional investment of US $5 per person per year, 147 million child deaths (including 60 million newborns), 32 million stillbirths, and 5 million maternal deaths could be avoided by 2035—a nine-fold return on investment in social and economic benefits in the highest-burden countries.

Investment in care at birth reduces stillbirth, maternal, and newborn deaths.

More than 3 million babies and women could be saved each year through investing in quality care around the time of birth. The day of birth is the most dangerous day in life of a woman and her child. Together, we can change this.
