WE’VE BEEN HELPING QUEENSLAND FAMILIES SINCE 1840Whilst the history of our business dates back to 1840 as the first ever funeral business in Queensland, it was not until 1909 when Alexander Gow acquired the remaining shares from his partner Walter S. Barrett, that the Alex Gow brand would become Queensland’s first and oldest funeral business.
Four generations of the Gow family have worked in the business and today Alexander’s grandson Alistair and his children continue the tradition of family ownership and the high standards set by their predecessors. We believe that by being family-owned we are able to give a more personal service and be more flexible to the individual needs of our clients.
We live for our business and everything we do reflects our on-going commitment to providing affordable, quality services to our community. With four locations across SE Queensland Alex Gow Funerals is close by to assist you and your family 24hrs a day.
It doesn’t matter if your need is immediate or you’re just thinking ahead, the wonderful staff at Alex Gow will be there to guide you through all the options. Call us anytime at all on 07 3851 7800.

Yet flowers and food are sometimes judged as unnecessary by bereaved families. “We don’t need all those flowers and all that food,” they say. I encourage them to set logic aside. The flowers and the food are symbols of love and support, and accepting them from friends is a way of accepting their support.
I also remind friends and families that food that is given on nice plates and in nice baking dishes is more suitable for the occasion. If you can’t use nice dishes at the funeral of someone loved, when can you? What’s more, it extends social support because the dishes’ owners will return to retrieve them. You don’t have to visit a second time to retrieve a paper plate.
Some families use the “in lieu of flowers” option to redirect friends who want to demonstrate their support. It’s true that donations to a charity that was special to the person who died may seem to have more lasting value and offer them a longer-term feeling of purpose. However, I encourage such families to consider saying, “In [his or her] memory, memorial donations may be made to…” and avoiding the “in lieu of flowers” phrase altogether. That way, friends and family members who wish to express their love and support through flowers may still do so.
As with all of the funeral elements we have been discussing in this series, foregoing flowers or another symbol is not the end of the world. But when families opt for “in lieu of flowers” and no viewing, I start to get a little more concerned.
In other words, no flowers and no viewing may be the right choice for a particular family, but leaving out too many elements creates a Swiss cheese effect for the funeral, in which there are more holes than cheese.
If the funeral is the foundation upon which healing in grief is built, you want that foundation to be rock solid, not riddled with gaps. So yes, I honour a family’s choices when it comes to symbols and other funeral elements. But when those choices start to diminish the funeral ceremony too much, I speak up and respectfully encourage them to reconsider. After all, this is the opportunity for them to make a transformation, i.e., “a decision that is good for them.”
It can often be the case that people who have never been to or planned a funeral before might be mystified by the parts and pieces of which funerals are made. And if they have never been educated about those elements, they’re more likely to dismiss them out of hand as unnecessary or even distasteful. A recent Trend we are seeing is that many families are chipping away at these elements.
Yet viewings, the body, readings, music, eulogies and symbols are all essential elements of a meaningful funeral ceremony. Each element I have been discussing in this article series uniquely contributes to the funeral, and it is only through combining many elements that you can create the rich tapestry that is
the transformative funeral.
So what are the symbols used in funerals? They are objects that represent so much more than they appear
to. In the funeral ceremony, symbols such as the cross (for Christians; other faiths use other symbols), flowers and
candles provide points of focus for mourners. They represent a reality that is hard to accept but that their beauty makes more
approachable in the moment.
Because they represent such profound beliefs, these symbols also tend to encourage the expression of mourners’ thoughts and feelings, i.e., the conversion of grief into mourning and also the search for meaning.
Furthermore, symbols such as these provide the comfort of tradition. Their continuity and timelessness ground the mourners at a time when all else seems chaotic.
Educating families about what some funeral symbols represent may help them feel more comfortable with including symbols in their ceremonies:
Some families like to provide those who attend the funeral with a small symbolic gift reflecting the life of the person who died, e.g., if he or she was a gardener, a packet of her favorite seeds; a golfer, a golf ball; a car person, a small model car, etc.
Keep in mind that some funeral symbols are primarily social, especially flowers and food. They represent support and love. Even the tradition of wearing black clothes to funerals is socially symbolic. It says to others: “I am bereaved (torn apart). Please give me your consideration and support.”
Why We Have Symbols In FuneralsAlan D. Wolfelt, Ph.D.
“Occasionally in life there are those moments of unutterable fulfillment which
cannot be completely explained by those symbols called words. Their meanings
can only be articulated by the inaudible language of the heart.”

“Occasionally in life there are those moments of unutterable fulfillment which cannot be completely explained by those symbols called words. Their meanings can only be articulated by the inaudible language of the heart.” – Martin Luther King Jr.
T hose of us who work in funer-al service often take the funeral ceremony and its common ele-
ments for granted. We sometimes forget that people who have never been to or planned a funeral before might be mys-tified by the parts and pieces of which funerals are made. And if they have nev-er been educated about those elements, they’re more likely to dismiss them out of hand as unnecessary or even distasteful. Obviously, a trend you are seeing is that many families are chipping away at these elements.
Yet visitations, the body, readings, mu-sic, eulogies and symbols are all essential elements of a meaningful funeral cere-mony. Each element I have been discuss-ing in this article series uniquely contrib-utes to the funeral, and it is only through combining many elements that you can create the rich tapestry that is the trans-formative funeral.
So what are the symbols used in fu-nerals? They are objects that represent so much more than they appear to.
In the funeral ceremony, symbols such as the cross (for Christians; other faiths use other symbols), flowers and candles provide points of focus for mourners. They represent a reality that is hard to ac-cept but that their beauty makes more ap-proachable in the moment.
Because they represent such profound beliefs, these symbols also tend to encour-age the expression of mourners’ thoughts and feelings, i.e., the conversion of grief into mourning and also the search for meaning.
Furthermore, symbols such as these provide the comfort of tradition. Their continuity and timelessness ground the mourners at a time when all else seems chaotic.
Educating families about what some funeral symbols represent may help them feel more comfortable with including symbols in their ceremonies:
Some families like to provide those who attend the funeral with a small sym-bolic gift reflecting the life of the person who died, e.g., if he or she was a garden-er, a packet of her favorite seeds; a golf-er, a golf ball; a car person, a small mod-el car, etc.
Keep in mind that some funeral sym-bols are primarily social, especially flow-ers and food. They represent support and love. Even the tradition of wearing black clothes to funerals is socially symbol-ic. It says to others: “I am bereaved (torn apart). Please give me your consideration and support.”
Yet flowers and food are sometimes judged as unnecessary by bereaved fam-ilies. “We don’t need all those flowers and all that food,” they say. Encourage them to set logic aside. The flowers and the food are symbols of love and support, and ac-cepting them from friends is a way of ac-cepting their support.
I also remind friends and families that food that is given on nice plates and in nice baking dishes is more suitable for the occasion. If you can’t use nice dishes at the funeral of someone loved, when can you? What’s more, it extends social support be-cause the dishes’ owners will return to re-trieve them. You don’t have to visit a sec-ond time to retrieve a paper plate.
Some families use the “in lieu of flow-ers” option to redirect friends who want to demonstrate their support. It’s true that donations to a charity that was spe-cial to the person who died may seem to have more lasting value and offer them a longer-term feeling of purpose. How-ever, I would suggest encouraging such

Sometimes the pressures of life bought about by ill-health, a disability or depression impact on our motivation, desire or ability to cook. Often, it’s the last thing we can or want to do.
Our sense of independence can be challenged by admitting we might need a little help. Meals providers are often told, “I wish I’d got meals sooner”.
A common problem facing people adapting to changed circumstances is poor nutrition and or weight loss. These often lead to more complications. A few decent meals
a week make a huge difference. The easiest way to find out about services is to ring your local Meals on Wheels service. Numbers listed below, they will be more than happy to explain how their particular service operates, and to get you started.

Puzzles Can Help Your Brain
Scientific studies have proven that working with puzzles and other logic games helps improve reasoning, memory and logic. They promote a form of synergy between the left and right brain, termed by psychologists as a “full brain approach”. This can result in better memory, deeper learning and better recall. Puzzles appeal to our creative and logical minds, offering a full brain work out, especially for retirees who don’t have a daily work commitment.
Alex Gow recognises this and hope that by offering this Puzzle Book with up to three-month’s worth of fun brain exercises, we can actually help you improve your brain vibrancy as you get older. One of the biggest fears for us all as we get older is losing our mental sharpness, possibly developing dementia, Alzheimer’s or other mental illnesses – but by giving our brain a moderate workout on a frequent basis we can help hold off the onset of some of these issues.
Puzzles and games also instigate social interaction and communication. Doing puzzles together is a pleasurable experience for all participants helping to maintain social and communicative skills. Science has also shown that when a puzzle is finally completed there is a feeling of satisfaction and dopamine is released in the brain, as a kind of reward system for our efforts.
Please enjoy your FREE Alex Gow Puzzle Book. Remember all the answers and solutions can be found on our web site www.alexgowfunerals.com.au They are published at the beginning of each month along with a couple of bonus Questions that will give you an extra entry in the monthly draw for the $100 Coles voucher.
