Education Outside
the classroom (EOTC)
Going to other places is an important part of every child’s learning journey. We are very lucky to have our wonderful PSG to help fund all sorts of outings and trips.
This week, Room 7 go to see Exxopolis in Brooklands Park, and next week, Room 6 is going to see ‘The Man Who Planted Trees’ at the Theatre Royal, both part of the Taranaki International Arts Festival.
Last week Rooms 2, 3 and 4 went to Chipmunks.
What great fun!
Thank you PSG!
Kia ora koutou. Nga mihi nui ki te whanau o te kura Puketapu.
Hello to parents and caregivers.
The All Blacks are on track in their campaign for the world cup later in the year. The Netball Silver Ferns were not quite up there but didn’t they play well. There is always a lot to be learnt from coming second.
The Taranaki Arts Festival is on for the next two weeks or so. The Exxopolis Luminarium at Brooklands Park is well worth a visit. It’s a bit like a bouncy castle that you go inside not outside.
How is the walking, biking and scooting? Please keep it up, it’s good for your tamariki.
Personal physical challenges. We often see cross country as one of those. You simply have to do it. Some find it easy other hard but that’s life. We expect everyone to prepare and give it their best. Complete is the goal. Once you complete then you can compete. Keep doing it, our courses are not very demanding.
Healthy eating: There are some concerns from staff about the amount of packeted foods some tamariki have in their lunch boxes. Treats are good but don’t forget the sandwiches, fresh veges and fruit. There are truckloads of evidence on the damage sugars do to our health and wellbeing. Harold the Giraffe, on his visit with the Life Education Trust, showed us the food pyramid. It was for us not for someone else. Biscuits and bars are definitely in the top tier.
I have an adult and child pass to every Taranaki Rugby home game this year. If you play rugby for interschool or in a Saturday Club team register at the school office for the draw.
Math’s Week. Maths month. Share with your tamariki their achievements. Mathematics is about wherever you look. Try to have a mathematical conversation every day. That can be as simple as telling the time or the number of peas on the plate. Playing board games or card games are maths activities that can easily be done at home. Don’t forget the maths week family challenges – every class has a different challenge.
Have a great week and keep smiling. It’s good for you!

The Garage Sale is on! Saturday 22 August 7.00am-11.00am Donations are still being gratefully accepted, any larger items can be dropped directly to the Hall after 5.30pm on Friday.
Board Update: Our Board continues in its role to provide governance to the school and the best learning environment for our tamariki. At the meeting held last week, discussions included the junior playground, school uniform and some of the new technology at school, including the imminent connection of our new network, N4L, and getting the most from online learning tools, such as Lexia Core 5. Among other things, the Board agreed to fund a portion of the upgrade to the School Hall; approved an application for funding for technology; and reviewed the first draft of the school’s new Anti Bullying policy. Minutes of all Board meetings are available from the School office and any member of the school community is welcome to attend any Board meeting. Next meeting: 17 September.

Our special guest at assembly on Friday is
Rowena Szeszeran-McEvoy, businesswoman, author,
editor, marathon runner, fitness guru and one of the
wealthiest people in Australia under the age of 40. Not
too shabby for a girl who ran away from home at 15 and
never finished year 10 at school!
She has some very clear messages about health and
fitness, with 5 simple tips for being healthy:
Be Happy
Drink more water
Eat more fruit and veg
Lift heavy things
Get puffed 4 times a day

Taranaki…!)

The person who miss kicked a soccer ball and smashed the staff room window last weekend could come and get their ball back and then we could organise some extra tuition for them on how to kick a ball in the appropriate place so that it doesn’t damage property... If anyone knows anything about this, please tell us.

Every week our Puketapu Leaders meet to discuss ways that they can make a positive difference at our school. To support fundraising for camps, plans are in place for a Puketapu Arts Festival in Term 4, with performances and food stalls. A disco is planned for Friday 4 September. (A theme is still to be decided.) Any student who has an idea or suggestion for the school can speak to any of the Puketapu Leaders - there are two in each Whanau Group.
