The Thinking Persons Soul Night? We kick off this month with news of a new and original night in the county ‘Lenny’s Philosophical Soul Night’ takes place at ‘Silks’ Club Midland Road Wellingboro NN8 1HQ on 11TH October. Brainchild behind the event Len Dopson gave us the lowdown!
Most will know Len from his 15 year tenure as promoter of ‘The Embankment Club’ Wellingboro Soul Nights that started way back in the early 90s and more recently as the founder of ‘Len’s Den’ at the very popular 2 roomed Soul Nights held at The Bowls Club Rushden, which unfortunately were forced to finish under there original guise in April of this year. Len commented “It was very sad to see the demise of the original nights particularly as they were attracting upwards to 300 people from all over the UK, we were all pretty gutted really”
The general consensus was to start another night but Len felt he needed some time to think it through carefully. Len’s Den had built up a healthy following built on the ethos of not being afraid of pushing a few boundaries with the music but at the same time not being elitist, a tough act to pull off you might argue. The atmosphere was always inclusive welcoming people with all kinds of ‘soul tastes’ Len explained “I wanted people to feel at least not afraid to try it” most did thankfully and a good few came back for another helping.
However before embarking on another night and rolling out the event to a potentially bigger audience Len really did his homework in selecting a venue and canvassing people’s opinions. He settled on ‘Silks’ it was a venue he had used for his 40th birthday a few years back, that went very well. Silks has an upstairs function room with a low ceiling and great sound system and Len thought just the right place for creating the atmosphere, plus it is a stones throw from where he lives (always a bonus) and has ample parking adjacent to the rear of the building. The feedback so far has been very positive, with a lot of the old ‘Den’
regulars both local and as far as way as London and the West Country making the trip.
Len said “I really hope people will give it a try. The Northern Soul/Soul scene has always been one inwardly full of opinions about the music, which I welcome as it’s one of the reasons it is still buzzing today, however sometimes barriers can go up and people stop listening because of strong opinion which is sad. I am hoping we can take a few of those obstacles down and people will just come and listen to some darn good Soul Music. To that end I have chosen some guest DJ’s not for their name but for what I think they can offer. There is no ‘music policy’ you may very well hear a classic Motown track next to a rare Soul record. However I promise we will be focussing on keeping people entertained. In fact we have a very interesting stage prop on the night but you will have to come along to find out what it is, all are very welcome to the party” Its £6.00 admission and runs from 8.00pm to 1.30am for more info call Len on 07970 361219. Well philosophically speaking that all sounds very tempting Len! Good luck with the night.
I would like to hear from you! While we are in a thinking mood, thought it would be good in the run up to Christmas to get peoples vote for their favourite all time Soul artist. Ok not and easy one I know as there are so many but would be good to get your view and we will publish the findings in the Christmas edition. I am not after your all time favourite record just the more major artists that you feel have contributed to make Soul what it is today and what they mean to you.
I will set the ball rolling so you get the gist. For me Bobby Womack and The Isley Brothers hit the spot. I love Northern Soul and Motown but what got me to liking Soul in general all those years back was listening to ‘That Lady’ by the Isleys which was in the
charts at the time and subsequently got me searching out their earlier Motown stuff. I first heard Bobby Womack in the mid seventies my brother passed on to me his then current LP ‘Home is where the heart is’ I still have it today and it is never far away from the turntable. Bobby performed, produced and charted right across the decades in many different styles and collaborated with many other artists’ right up to his death earlier this year. That gravel laden, emotion soaked voice of his gets me every time!
Be great to hear your ideas and nominations folks. As always you can email at [email protected] for this or anything else soulful to report. See you somewhere soulful soon! Jem
Bobby’s A Soul Legend, Now Nominate Yours.

Just a stones throw off the main A14 Kettering bypass on the Wellingborough Road, Isham, is The Monk & Minstrel. Tom Craddock took over the running of this stone built public house earlier this year and bought in chef Suzie Minney, who had previously been responsible for setting up the restaurant at a major venue in Rushden.
Between them the pair are fast gaining a reputation for good food and service, and a fine selection of ales and beverages compliment the fayre on offer.
On the main menu are some classic pub favourites including rump and sirloin steaks, beer battered cod and sausage and mash. With main course prices start from only £5.95 the menu also offers fabulous value for money.
The Monk& Minstrel also has their own over 50’s menu where all main courses are £5.95 each or two can dine on a main course for £10.00.
The young people do not miss out either with a children's menu at just £3.95 and ice cream desserts at £1.95, a visit here does not break the bank.
For those with a lighter appetite a good selection of sandwiches, club sandwiches and baguettes are also available.
With 5 Star food hygiene rating, large garden and car park a friendly welcome awaits at The Monk & Minstrel.
Quality And Value At The Monk & Minstrel Isham.

Saturday August 30th saw Rock Your Age return to the Castle Theatre in Wellingborough in support of The Air Ambulance. With an array of talent throughout the day. We were fortunate to see a few of the performances, and a superb mix it was.
Local rock stalwart Andy Green took to the stage early in the day,due to a gig in the evening, with his band Still Remains, and really set the bar high for those that had to follow. I have seen Andy's covers band on a number of occasions but this was the first viewing of Still Remains. The whole set of well written songs was confidently delivered by a great line up that showed what gigging week in, week out can do. Slick and energetic and oozing confidence if you have not yet caught these guys when out and about I strongly urge you to do so.
Magdalen Bridge a four piece band from Wellingborough brought a different edge to the stage. With a very visual front man Magdalen Bridge gave a fresh and vibrant performance, the only observations I had was he needs to be more confident when
communicating with the audience about the material in between numbers and some nice guitar licks got a little lost in a drum heavy mix.
Peter Marchant and his band are Alternative Pop from London and the East Midlands. Bastille, Mumford & Sons, Tom Odell and classic artists Queen and David Bowie all influence his music.
Peter writes and records every track, and plays every instrument you hear on his records but is joined on stage by Alex Edwards - Guitar & Vocals Matt ‘Shaggy’ Marchant - Bass Guitar & Vocals Sam Thorne - Drums & Percussion Lee Willmer - Guitar & Vocals
Melodic and commercial songs delivered very confidently but a little more attention needed on some of the vocal harmonies in parts. His attempted entrance was a little cringe worthy and an his second un called for encore unnecessary considering the time restraints of the day.
Phil Spalding started his professional career with rock artist Bernie Tormé in 1976. Later he joined Original Mirrors before beginning a collaboration with Toyah, in December 1980. Whilst with The Toyah band he recorded and co-wrote songs for studio albums and toured with the band, until 1983. Since then he has been a member of GTR and Mike Oldfield's band. Added to this Phil has also worked with such luminaries as Mick Jagger, Seal, OMD, Elton John, Randy Crawford, GTR, Robbie Williams, Kylie Minogue, Original Mirrors, Roger Chapman, Spalding also recorded all bass tracks on the Lion King soundtrack studio album. So a solo bass master class from the man was a real treat for those of us present. Sharing his knowledge by playing the bass lines live to various tracks including Earth Wind & Fire, Deep Purple, Ramones and Doobie Brothers to name a few, and then explaining how he shifted his technique to blend in with the artists in question. His passion and talent were self evident and worth the admission ticket alone. Phil is appearing live at the Picturedrome in Northampton on Saturday October 11th and, if you can, grab a ticket fast. (See page 37)
Other bands appearing were Of Blue Skies & Youth, Neumonics, Lakeshore Avenue, The Morning Chorus, Tortuga, Bad Touch, Jet Pack, Stereo Skull, The Kaos, The Last Of Us & DJ BS
This event is already being planned for next year and if you like live rock music it is a great indoor festival with a great array of talent raising money for a great cause, next year.........go, please!
An Array Of Talent At This Years Rock Your Age.

Top musicians Phil Spalding and Neil Taylor are bringing their collective musical talents to Northampton's Picturedrome Theatre on Saturday October 11th.
Good friends for many years, Phil as a bassist and 'special guest' Neil as a guitarist have both been at the top of the music making game for many years now and have, in fact, played on many internationally successful recordings together such as Robbie Williams' 'Sing When You're Winning' and 'Escaplogy' including all the well known singles such as 'Feel', 'Come Undone', 'Love Supreme' and 'Kids'. Between them both they have played with a veritable 'Who's Who' of singers, groups and artists at the very top of the music business.
Phil Spalding brings his acclaimed bass playing and chat show 'Music and Mayhem' to the stage while Neil Taylor brings his newly acclaimed solo material to the same stage with both musicians uniting for a grand finale set on the night of the concert.
Come and see two of the UK's premier and first class musicians up close and personal at a concert that promises to be informative, exciting, revealing and dangerous !!! If you're a musician then this is a MUST SEE CONCERT !!! If you're not a musician and ever wondered how this stuff ever happens then IT'S MUST SEE CONCERT FOR YOU TOO !!! Two musicians that have been at the top of the musical trade for many, many years AND there's a VERY, VERY GOOD REASON FOR THAT !!! COME AND SEE IT on SATURDAY OCTOBER 11TH at the PICTUREDROME NORTHAMPTON … ROCK ON !!!

Come and join this year’s sparkling and glamourous Black & White Masquerade Ball and help raise much needed funds for the children’s charity based in Earls Barton. This year’s event will be the charity’s 5th annual ball, taking place on Saturday, October 18th at the Park Inn, Northampton. Invitations are going out for this event to all friends and supporters of the charity to attend and to enjoy a great night of entertainment. NC TLC Trust’s Events’ organiser, Victoria Mifsud said: “The annual
event is a real highlight in the charity’s fundraising calendar and tickets are still available for this great evening out. “It is an event that is enjoyed immensely each year by our friends and supporters. It also provides the opportunity for reflection on the charity’s year of fundraising and think more about how funds raised help the charity’s families.” She added: “It is always such a brilliant social event for everyone and it raises a great deal of money and awareness for the charity. “The ball also showcases some great entertainment too for guests and this year’s event sees the return of Groove Connection performing live, as well as the disco being provided for a second year by
Inspiration FM.”
Tickets for the event are on sale from the charity’s office and via the Golden Giving website. The cost of the tickets are £38 per person and tables seat 10 people.
