POTENTATE’S MESSAGEOn behalf of your elected Divan, I want to thank each and every one of you for electing us to the of ces that we hold this year. It is certainly an honor for all of us to be able to serve you as your elected representatives. We all pledge to work for you, the Nobility, in 2017. As we promised at the Installation we managed to cut our expenses in order to lower the cost of doing business. That being said, we still have the next promise, which is the membership and we need all the help we can get from all our members.
The year is moving fast and we have had our ups and downs already as we have lost our local caterer at the Center. It has created a bit of concern to the units but we will have corrected all this by the June Business meeting. Nobles please be patient with the Divan because it is important that we work together on all issues.
By the time you read this Sahida we will have completed our 2017 Auction and we thank all those who volunteered and supported this event to make it successful.
The Winter PNSA in Portland was very rewarding and enjoyable, it gave the Divan a chance to get to know each other as we have a new member among us. We tried again to present the Bully Proof Guide, and we are hopeful that we might get another chance at Imperial Session.
We are looking forward to the 2017 parade season as we move into May. Hopefully all the units have signed up for a few parades. I’m sure the summer parade season will be kicked off strong and the Al Shamal units/clubs/committees will be spreading our message as well as entertaining crowds all over Northern Alberta. Keep up the good work!
I am looking for your support at the Lacombe Parade to join Al Azhar our Southern Neighbors. Look forward to unit support.
Your elected representatives will be in Daytona Beach Florida, at the 2017 Imperial Session in July. A great opportunity to work with all Shrine Centers and the Hospitals.
Members, the Shrine Center is our extended home and it should be looked after as such, if anyone can lend a hand to improve our extended home so we can cut costs please step up to the plate.
It is an honor and pleasure to serve all of you and we are looking forward to a great summer.
Potentate 2017Ferit (Fred) Susun
RECORDER’S RAMBLINGSNobles having attended recorder school again this year and obtaining a greater understanding on how our database is to be updated, to make tracking and reporting more streamlined. And learning that we will eventually be moving to a paperless reporting and payment system: which again will improve and speed up the process, thereby saving us the costs of mailing.
Whilst talking about the database I must remind all Nobles that you can individually sign up to amend your details like address, telephone numbers and email address or just con rm that all is correct.
As we now move forward into parade season and have more visibility for Al Shamal we all need to be aware of the Freemasons around us to see if any are interested in becoming an active member of Al Shamal and if you nd a potential member please bring those petitions into the of ce for processing.
The Edmonton Masonic Day is fast approaching and I encourage all to submit your names to the of ce. Those nobles who submit their names, entrance and the boxed lunch will be complimentary.

CLOWN REPORTDerf scored one for us. Teamsters rail local. sounds like they want to throw 500 bucks at us. Another one we can’t afford to miss.
ASSISTANT RABBANI had the pleasure of attending the Assistant Rabban training in Tampa in the middle of March of this year. This training was a more comprehensive follow-up to the Oriental Guide training that I attended, a couple of years ago. Some of the hi-lights of the training dealt with Shrine Law, Risk Management, Budgeting, Planning, Fundraising and Membership. The Assistant Rabban Ladies also received training dealing with Shrine Protocol, Shrine Law and Fundraising ideas. This was a very intense training for three days, and I would strongly recommend it to anyone wanting to proceed thru the Divan, to participate in. It is well worth it.
Bev and myself also had a chance to meet with our Assistant Rabban counterparts, but especially the counterparts from the Paci c Northwest Shrine Association. We have gained a bond of friendships that will last a lifetime. We continually keep in touch and even have made a private Facebook account to keep up on their events and the happenings in their lives and Shrine Centers. I cannot wait till the 2017 Summer PNSA in Washington State at the end of July, to get together for Dinner and enjoy some Fellowship again.
The training conference ended with two very interesting speakers. The First speaker was Renaldo Wynn, a former defensive end who played with the New Orleans Saints, the New York Giants and the Washington Redskins. His talk was on Teamwork and how you can succeed if you work together. After Wynn retired in 2012, he joined his former Coach Joe Gibbs at his NASCAR headquarters and assists the marketing department at Joe Gibbs Racing, another winning venture because of Teamwork. The other speaker was Shrine patient Gabby Falcone. She could say nothing but great things about what the Shriner’s Hospital for Children has done for her. It was a touching and interesting story with a lot of laughs, enjoyed by all.
I look forward to using this material from the conference in helping our Shrine Centre grow and be recognized in our community.

In Memoriam
Here are our departed Nobles who have made the Great Pilgrimage across searing desert sands to the cool Oasis of Eternal Life. These gentle men were our Friends and Brethren and the void created by their leaving causes an ache in our hearts that will not soon go away.

LEAD THE WAYDIRECTOR’S STAFFThe Director’s Staff through the capable leadership of Noble Dave Win eld and its ever supportive members remain on track of its program implementation this year. The Potentate himself, Ill. Fred Susun, in his desire to promote the noble objectives of Al Shamal Shrine during his term of of ce, has been a constant attendee to the unit’s meetings every rst Wednesday of the month at Biff’s Lounge.
Last February 12, the Director’s Staff held its Annual Valentines Luncheon which was held at the Capilano Sawmill Restaurant this year. As always, it turned out to be a lovely gathering of Nobles and their loved ones, widows and friends.
For the second quarter of 2017, the unit is busy with its Spring Beef Jerky Drive effectively chaired by Noble Perry White. Proceeds of the sales help support the unit’s operations and charitable programs. As the Shrine prepares for the parade season, Noble Rick Beaumont mentioned St. Albert, Devon, Sherwood Park, K Days, Camrose, Irma, Vegreville and Ranfurly as possible areas where the unit will participate. For the upcoming Dinner Auction, the unit has again purchased a table in support of the annual fundraiser.
For the Nobles who may have any questions with regards to jewellery and other Shrine paraphernalia, Noble Neil White surely has the answer as fresh stocks might have already arrived. And while doing that, grab a few tickets for a chance to win exciting prizes at the Dinner Draws happening every month.
Shake the hand of a Director’s Staff Noble any day!

TLC / SILVER WINGSThe 2nd annual TLC/Silver Wings “joint maintenance day”
TLC REPORTWith the return of spring and also our “snowbirds”, the TLC Corps is now getting the units ready for the 2017 Parade Season. This year we will be participating in 12 parades.
We are excited to have recently purchased three units and have had one unit donated and would like to have any Shriners that are interested in riding one of our “ retrucks” in the parades to contact the TLC Chief Wayne Barrett or any other TLC member. We have a great time and the kids love the “ retrucks”, the ashing lights and the sounds of the sirens.
We held our Second Annual Maintenance Day” on May 7th, when we get together with the Silver Wings Unit to shine up our units and get them parade worthy. This is followed by a potluck lunch, where the Unit members and our Ladies get to know each other better.
We welcome any Shriners that are looking to join a unit to check us out!

DAUGHTERS OF THE NILEOn Saturday, March 18, 2017, Al Amira Temple No. 157 held its 27th Installation of Of cers at the Freemasons’ Hall. A young Temple by Nile standards, we are, however, a strong, vibrant, enthusiastic group. There are young members and seasoned veterans, all active in our Sessions, fund raising activities, and fun events.
Our Temple is blessed to have an exceptional group of Elective Of cers, Appointive Of cers, Past Queens, and, most importantly, Ladies of the Household working together in support of the Shriners Hospitals.

Upcoming events include the Spring Ceremonial on May 6th and our trip in June to Niagara Falls, NY for our “101st Supreme Session”. We will be participating in Edmonton’s Masonic Day on Saturday, June 24th. Our Membership/Public Relations Committee will have us marching in a number of parades over the summer months. The Temple has a FUN golf event planned for Sunday, July 9th.
We will be preparing for our Supreme Queen’s Of cial Visit and Ceremonial on Monday, August 21st.

EDMONTON LADIES AUXILIARY TO SHRINERS HOSPITALS FOR CHILDRENThe Edmonton Ladies Auxiliary to Shriners Hospitals for Children held a very successful Tea and Fashion Show on Saturday, April 22nd at the Millwoods Golf and Country Club.
A “full house” of ladies, and a few gentlemen, enjoyed a delicious lunch as well as shopping at the vendors present. Following lunch, a number of Auxiliary members modeled the beautiful out ts from Village Fashions in Stony Plain.
Thank you to all the Auxiliary members who worked so diligently to make this event a success. Congratulations to the following ladies who were presented with their “25 Year Long Service Pins” Fannie Campbell, Mary Fyffe, Marian Laberge, Joy Leskewich, Izola Mottershead, and Ilonka Wormsbecker.

ARAB PATROLRecently, our Captain, Noble Bob Duncan Sr, and Noble Jean Deslauriers traveled to Lamont to present our Unit’s donation to the city’s local representatives for the installation of a park bench. The bench will recognize the outstanding support local businessman and Shriner Noble James Lopetinsky has provided Shriners attending Lamont’s annual parade.
Our Unit is grateful for Noble Jim’s annual breakfast graciously provided to members of our Unit, as well as other Shrines participating in Lamont’s parade.
Lamont is developing a new city park and this provided us with a tting opportunity to honour Noble Lopetinsky this summer.
In addition to this project, at a recent meeting we decided to make a $25,000 donation to the Canadian Shrine Hospital in Montreal. While in the past several years we have supported several non-Masonic community agencies, we have chosen to focus our attention - yet again - on a cause most aligned with our Shriners Creed.
Respectfully submitted by, Noble Mahlon Weir Unit Secretary

PARADING FOR THE KIDS...Some time in the past 10 years, an Imperial Potentate wrote a piece about the money that comes from parading.
His points were . . .
There are many as equally good charities as our Shrine Hospitals yet we get more than our fair share of donations.
The reason, he said, is that most everybody will at some time have a discussion with a lawyer about the disposition of their estates.
Lawyers have a check list they use in asking about who should be acknowledged in the will. One of those questions is to the effect of any charity, civic group etc we would like to acknowledge.
And Bob’s your uncle as they suddenly remember the guys parading in the funny hats for all those hospitals for kids. Just sayin’ . . . .

EASTER EGG HUNTThe Easter Egg hunt on April 1, 2017 at the Al Shamal Shrine Centre was a success with 87 in attendance, including 28 kids. It was great to see a lot of the Nobility along with their children and grandchildren enjoying the day of fun and activities. There were a few Masons in attendance, and they got to experience rsthand how family orientated and fun the Shrine can be. The craft tables were lled with the younger ones making Easter baskets and decorating with colors and beads. Then it was off to the next table for cookie decorating and where even the big kid’s, you know who you are Mom/ Dad, or was it Grandpa and Grandma actually doing the decorating!
Light snacks, juices, coffee and desserts were served, and the deviled eggs were a real hit thanks to Brandie. Biff’s Lounge was pretty full, we may have to use the big auditorium next year to accommodate everyone. All the kids then went into the big hall for the Easter Egg Hunt. It was hard to contain the excitement while preparing the scramble for Easter eggs. The kids laid down on the oor and closed their eyes as chocolate eggs were spread all around them. At the count of three, the race was on to collect as many eggs as possible. The littler ones may have had a little help, but that was all part of the fun. My reward came, when a little guy came up to me, with chocolate smeared about his mouth and with a great big smile said “I got chocolate”!
A great big ‘Thanks” to all the volunteers that came out to setup and cleanup, man the tables and help with the activities. The Clowns added to the occasion by entertaining and making balloon art. Extra Kudos to the ones who made and/or brought in food. This made the event extra special. But the real bonus was, everyone who came to make it a fun lled morning, I look forward to seeing a lot more of the Shrine families at future events.
Let’s make every event bigger and better than the last!

PULL-TAB FAMILY PORTRAIT (Do you have any tabs that look like these?)
One might well ask what would compel someone as old as me to run around the countryside collecting scraps of aluminum. Why would a sane person gather in thousands of beverage can pull-tabs? WHY? And why, by all that is Holy, would you do this, relentlessly, for years? Believe it or not, there is a reasonable explanation.
It's for the same reason you take the time, and exert the effort, to set aside those same tiny pieces of metal for me — so that our Shrine can continue to operate; so we can get those special children the unique care they so rightfully deserve. That is our cause. That is our mission. And we accomplish it — in this instance — one tiny loving step at a time.
Please continue to set those pull-tabs aside for me to pick up. It helps us do what we are dedicated to doing — helping those who cannot help themselves.

On June 6, 1876, the Imperial Council, the original governing body of the Shriners fraternity, was founded. To honor this important milestone in our history, Shriners International has declared June 6 as Shriners International Awareness Day. On this day, nobles everywhere are encouraged to celebrate their great fraternity and raise awareness of its importance in their communities.
The leadership of Shriners International is mindful that June 6 is also honored as D-Day, the day in 1944 when Allied forces landed on the beach in Normandy to begin the invasion of northern France. While Shriners International certainly honors the valor and courage of everyone who served on D-Day, many historic events happen on a single day; and June 6 also holds a separate, special meaning for our fraternity.
A Time to Honor and Celebrate Our Rich HeritageOn June 6, Shriners International asks all nobles to publicly display their pride in their fraternity by wearing a fez (when appropriate), hat, shirt, lapel pin, or other item with the Shriners International logo.
In addition to wearing Shriner apparel, Shriners International also encourages all temples and Shrine clubs to organize special events at their temples and in their communities to honor our fraternity’s incredible history and achievements, and invite others to participate, as well.
Along with increasing awareness, these events will also support membership efforts, because the more information we share with our communities about Shriners International, the more potential we build for membership growth. Participating in this international day of recognition will motivate potential members to learn more about us, and also inspire our current members to become more involved.
Shriners International Awareness Day is the perfect opportunity to showcase our pride; share information about our fraternity and the benefits of becoming part of an organization dedicated to fun, fellowship and philanthropy; and highlight the different ways our organizations impact the world around us.
On this day, we ask you to honor our history by sharing both our heritage and your own unique story of being a Shriner, as well as our philanthropy’s mission to improve the lives of children and make the world a better place.
During this time, we hope you also take the time to reflect on why the fraternity is important to you personally, and why you became a member. We are all a part of the greatest organization in the world – we should be proud to share our enthusiasm for the fraternity with the world around us, and Shriners International Awareness Day is a great opportunity to do so.
We hope that every Shriner and every temple will participate in this important opportunity to honor our fraternity.
▶ Wear your fez on Shriners InternationalAwareness Day when appropriate (during anofficial Shriners function).

A Shiners’ Plea for Fellowship
Almighty God Speak to me let me hear your voice,
The heart of the Shrine is grieving from rancor to verbose.
Mercy to a child of need relief from infirmity and pain,Whilst in the swirl of emotions
the Shrine looks the other way.
Honor now our convent upon the square proclaimed,
Four points of fidelity and brotherhood bound by an indivisible chain.
