EVENTS GUIDE IntroductionWelcome to the all-new Alton Events Guide for 2017. The town has such a diverse range of events on offer, there truly is something to suit everyone.
This publication contains a comprehensive listings guide for events organised by Alton Town Council during the year, as well as a whole host of local organisations and attractions. Alton is such a lively town with lots going on to celebrate, whether your preference is for music, art, sport, history, cars, local culture, walks or markets. Alongside the variety of regular and one-off events on offer, Alton has a number of local attractions to suit all interests from the Curtis Museum, The Watercress Line and The Allen Gallery in the centre of town to Jane Austen’s House, Chawton House Library and Gilbert White’s House in the nearby villages.
The Guide this year contains details of our popular Annual Walking Festival in April as well as a focus on Jane Austen and Regency Week in June which forms part of the Hampshire Cultural Trust JA200 celebrations which take place throughout the year.
I still remember my fi rst visit to Alton and how I was immediately struck by the sense of community; nowhere is that more tangible than at one of our many local events. Whether this is your hundredth visit to Alton or your fi rst, I hope that this guide helps you fi nd the experience you have been looking for.
Kind regards,Councillor Bisi Eni OlotuChairman – Community and Events CommitteeAlton Town Council

2017 will be the 10th year of Jane Austen Regency Week, which was inaugurated not only to celebrate the time Jane Austen spent in Alton and Chawton but also to raise the profi le of Alton in today’s world of Jane Austen Tourism.
2017 is a special year in the Jane Austen calendar as it is the 200th anniversary of her death. Hampshire Cultural Trust is leading the county’s commemorations with its “Jane Austen in Hampshire” theme and we are playing a full part with a special Jane Austen Regency Week - planning more events than ever before.
The Week commences on Saturday 17th June with Regency Day in the town featuring stalls, street entertainment, petting animals, carriage rides, and people parading in Regency Costume. In the evening there will be a Regency Ball.
The programme continues with Regency Choral Evensong, Walks around Chawton and Alton, Talks at Jane Austen’s House Museum, Chawton House Library, Gilbert White’s House, Alton Library and the Friends Meeting House. The talk at the Allen Gallery will discuss William Curtis, Jane’s apothecary. There will also be Garden Tours at Chawton House, an Evening Opening at Jane Austen’s House Museum and music and dining at the Alton House Hotel.
We are expecting more visitors than usual, especially from the USA, Europe and the rest of the UK. However, we know most of our support will be from local people proud to be part of our unique position in celebrating the life of Jane Austen.
