I know it was difficult to say goodbye to Fr. Todd last week, even though he was only here a year, he has made an
impact on so many parishioners’ lives. I will miss him (though I believe my dogs will miss him more). I was
informed that Fr. Matthew Joseph MCBS will be assigned here as our associate pastor. He is a well-seasoned priest
(that means older) and has been in the area for one year. When I was asked if I would like him to be assigned here I
had two concerns; how he would get along with the dogs and how easy it is to understand him (he passed both tests).
I am hoping all parishioners who are able to will attend our
“Good Ol’ Summer Time” Family Fest Honoring the 175th Anniversary of our church on Sunday, July 29, 2018, after the noon Mass. An RSVP form is on
page 12 and also available in the Parish Office or at the Welcome Desk .

from Fr. Todd. . . . . . (Repeating Fr. Todd’s farewell…) It is hard to believe that this is my last weekend at St. Johns!
I just want to say thank you and what a privilege it has been to serve here with you. Thank you for your warm welcome and all of your prayers and encouragement over my year here. I especially want to thank Fr. Robert for his mentorship and friendship!
I will be living in Hudson at Sacred Heart’s rectory. Fr. Tomy Kattikanayil lives there as well and will help with Masses both at my parishes and in the greater region. I am very happy that I will be living with another priest for my first assignment. It will be a blessing to have fraternity and also the continuity of a priest who has served in the area for a time. Fr. Tomy is from India so I am also hopeful that he likes to cook curry- because I like to eat it!
With both parishes being smaller this assignment will be a great place to start out. Every parish I have been to has had a school and they always bring such joy and life to a parish. It is going to be fun getting over to the school and getting to know all of the kids.
Sacred Heart’s flooring will be renovated during the month of July so my first month there I will be celebrating Mass in the basement. I am sure Fr. Joe Krupp is struck by the timing- he just finishes getting things fixed up and he has to move! So, thank you again for a great year. Please pray for me and I will pray for you.

St. Mary on the Lake Parish 450 Manitou Beach Manitou Beach, MI 49253 250 families who attend year round 400-500 families in the summer between Memorial
Day and Labor day because of tourists coming to the lake for camping, summer cottages, etc.
Manitou Beach is a community of roughly 2,000. Like Fenton, I think lake time will be part of my ministry!
I find great irony in the fact that St. Mary’s is located on Devil’s Lake. We will strive to be a good influence!
Sacred Heart Parish 207 South Market Street Hudson, MI 49247 500 Families Sacred Heart’s School: Pre-K through 6th grade. There
are approximately 80 students Hudson is a town of 2,300 and is a rural farming
community. It sounds like I will be able to do some farming as part of my pastoral duties!
Sacred Heart is a beautiful stone church, much like the Chapel here at St. Johns. It was dedicated in 1906.

Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults
I would like to continue from my last
week’s article and share another response I
received to my question (addressed to this
years RCIA Group):
How do you see God working in your
lives?
“God is constantly working in my life, even
when it's hard for me to notice him. I try to
keep my "eye on the prize" but sometimes I
get a little off track and God centers me and
puts me back on my path.
“I am always thinking about Jesus and how
he lived his life and what I can do to
become a better person. When I'm having
trouble sleeping, I take his hand and we go
for a walk.
“A few times a week, I get up early to pray
and meditate before my busy day. I always
ask God to send the Holy Spirit to be with
me. I imagine the Spirit falling over me
like a glowing liquid that covers every inch
of my body, from the hair on my head to
the cracks between my toes. One morning,
a couple of weeks ago when I was asking
for the Holy Spirit to come, the lyrics to a
song popped into my head, "I am already
there." That put the biggest smile on my
face.”
Okay Catholics in the pews, let me hear
from you. 'How do you see God working
in you lives?"

not trying to increase His glory but to

Youth Ministry
For some children (especially those
active ones) just about everything we
offer at church can seem a little chal-
lenging for them. It is hard to sit
still, after all, for some kids.
That’s a good reason to enroll your child in VBS. This is a
lively, fun, ACTIVE week - but imparting the same Chris-
tian messages that we otherwise present in an ordinarily
more sedate way. VBS is fun! And if your child comes
away with nothing more than that - they had FUN at church
- then it is a win.
A young participant in last year’s program said, when asked
if other children should sign up for this year’s program:
Yes. They will like it. Because they have good rou-
tines and the dancing part is really good exercise
for you. The singing part is so you can sing to God!
And in addition to learning movement routines and singing,
there are hands-on craft activities, games, prayer and a
strong presentation of important truths about our faith.

Faith in Flint Day of Healing
Sponsored by the Deacons of the Diocese of Lansing
What was formerly called Deacon Day in
Flint, is now known as Faith in Flint, It is
August 25, 2018. We deacons walk the
neighborhoods of east Flint and try to speak to
the people living in every home. It is a great
day of meeting new people and inviting them to
St. Mary’s Church on Franklin St. We invite
everyone, not just Catholics.
We collect goods all summer as the need is
great. We here in Genesee County are
responsible for the items listed. Boxes will be
placed at the entrances of the Church and
also in the Outreach office.
Please join us in helping our Bishop help Flint.
Proceeds go to the Saint Francis Prayer Center
and St. Mary’s Catholic Church Flint. These
people need to know Jesus is alive in the
Church today.
Thank you Respect Life!
Thank you to all who participated. We had a great turnout for the baby shower. People responded generously
giving beautiful gifts and donations of money. This concludes this project for Respect Life in our Parish. They
have already begun their work on their next project. Respect Life is working hard to keep Catholic Issues alive
in our hearts, and educate us on the Churches stance on modern issues.
Respect life will take on many of the contentious issues that are making news in our world. Please read their
articles in the bulletin and be an informed Catholic. We hope to raise issues that will make you think about t real
life issues you and I will have to deal with in the future for some of us, and right now for many of us.
One such issue is for us more mature Parishioners. Is whether to sign a DNR at the hospital? (Do Not
Resuscitate) Where does the Church stand on this? What are the implications of hospice? What about
euthanasia? How about palliative care? Who is your medical advocate? Do you have an advocate? Does your
advocate know your wishes for medical emergencies?
These are just a few of the issues to be discussed in the future.

There are 3 shifts of workers: setup, greeting and sharing time with fellow parishioners and of course clean up are all important jobs. This is our 175th anniversary, let’s be a part of it. You don't have to be part of CCW to offer your help with this family fun event! You don't want to miss this celebration. Circle the date on your calendars and RSVP on the cards in the church pews so that our cooks and planners prepare enough food. August 8, we will have breakfast away from the parish at 10:00a.m. at the Hill Street Grill on Hill Rd. between 1 75 and Fenton Rd. They have enough room for a group of us. In her Facebook video, Michigan State Police trooper Amy Belanger addressed many myths and facts about Human Trafficking.
First, by law there is no such thing as a minor prostitute. All who are under the age of 18 are considered victims. The majority of young victims are between 13 and 16 years old. The younger they are the more money the traffickers make. The youngest rescued victim was a four-month-old who was being trafficked by her parents.
Second, trafficking happens everywhere. Most people living in rural areas believe it only happens in large cities. They also believe that most victims are kidnapped and moved across country. Three (3) percent of victims are kidnapped.
Third, traffickers are classified into three groups – the gorilla, the CEO, and the lover. The gorilla is the trafficker who takes the victims by force, kidnapping. The CEO is the trafficker who promises fame and fortune through jobs like modeling. The lover is the trafficker who usually makes first contact through social media, takes his time to build a relationship of trust, buys gifts, and convinces the victim he loves and wants to take care of her.
Fourth, drugs are a means of control used by the traffickers. The question is not if the victims will be drugged but when.
Please pray to end all forms of Human Trafficking and report all suspicious activity by calling 911 or the National Hotline at 888-3737-888.

FaithFest18 was a great success Saturday,
June 23 at St Francis Retreat Center,
DeWi . A record crowd of families and
young people enjoyed a day of live music,
social and recrea onal ac vi es, food,
fireworks and fun -- all centered around a
vigil Mass held “under the stars.”

This fun fundraiser that takes place at Applefest is a great way for you to get rid of stuff you no longer need or want. But fear not if you miss that day!
