General Director
Welcome to our teeming midwinter diary – packed with ways to enjoy the festive season from every possible musical angle! Northern Sinfonia alone present a cornucopia of Christmas treats, from Handel’s Messiah to the evergreen Snowman (each year introducing more very young children to a live orchestra for the first time); from Rejoice (Simon Halsey’s sparklingly programmed feast of Christmas music) to Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony, and the iconic children’s films ‘The Gruffalo’ and ‘The Gruffalo’s Child’, performed for the first time ever with a live orchestra.
As always December offers a rich menu of showcase performances by our own students and also choral projects in which you can get involved - this year including our special Sing Together: Abba Choir giving you the chance to perform in Hall One on New Year’s Eve. Following the success of last New Year at The Sage Gateshead, this year we’ve another action-packed New Year’s Eve musical party followed the next day by Bradley Creswick’s gloriously unpredictable Northern Sinfonia Viennese New Year’s Day concerts.
Other special events in this diary range from Christmas with the Rat Pack to The Magic of Motown, from Katherine Jenkins to Status Quo, and from Massed Brass Bands to Bruckner’s mighty Eighth Symphony from the CBSO, and young audiences will be looking forward to the

rady delicious Warming Songs for Winter Days, the Big
Family Sing and Dance, and Cumbrian storyteller Taffy Thomas’ Christmas Farewell – all crowned by a feast of free Concourse performances and special seasonal offers in our Shop, Café and Brasserie.
Northern Sinfonia are then back in the first weeks of 2013 with Music Director Thomas Zehetmair, the peerless tenor Ian Bostridge, and Simon Halsey introducing the music of American choral sensation Eric Whitacre to the North East, with special nights at the ballet and in post-war Paris along the way. Other welcome returns include Celtic Connections’ scorching Transatlantic Sessions, the Bergen Philharmonic from across the North Sea, and another great Folkworks series of Folk Rising.
Finally, I’m delighted to announce that in an exciting new partnership between The Sage Gateshead and Gateshead Council, we’re building on the council’s track record of arts and cultural programming in their fine Old Town Hall (where we were ourselves based before opening The Sage Gateshead) to develop it as an exciting new North East cultural hub, welcoming people of all ages to a broad-based programme of participatory arts and performance. The partnership will launch another new chapter in the life of this historic and much-loved building at the heart of the local community, and we’ll be making more announcements about that in the coming months.
I and all my colleagues hope you will find many unmissable highlights in this packed festival, and wish you a very happy Christmas and many enjoyable and rewarding return visits in 2013!
