Of particular interest is the description of the initial apprehension regarding our founding followed by the undisputed success of the centre thereafter. PAST AND FUTURE EVENTS: The MGCC put on a good display of our cars at the George Old Car Show. Brief rain showers cooled but did not deter the public or exhibitors. This show exhibits remarkable vintage and veteran vehicles but there are unfortunately also a large number of unremarkable and somewhat “ordinary” vehicles which in my opinion detract from the interest of the display. However there is no doubt that the owners of the latter are very proud of them and will justify their presence!

FROM THE HIGH CHAIR,

AGM: Another milestone for our club has passed with the holding of the recent AGM and the celebration of our tenth anniversary. You will all receive the minutes in due course but for those who were not able to be there, I shall summarise proceedings. No contentious issues were raised. The proposed amendment to our constitution to finally make us completely legal with respect to our income tax exempt status was approved unanimously. I take this opportunity to sincerely thank Duncan Paton and Neil Metelerkamp for their hard work in this regard and in respect of managing the club’s finances which are in a very healthy state. The existing members of the committee were all re-elected and we welcome Leish Horak to the team as an additional member. I would like to repeat my appreciation for the work that all committee members put into maintaining the excellent status of the club. The Antart Trophy for the most enthusiastic member was shared between Fred Mullany and Clive Holliday and the T Type Trophy was awarded to Brian Davidson. The club car register kept by Keith Burton and Susan Marsden was on display and any member wanting to know more about the MGs in the club is welcome to consult them. I reiterate our thanks to Trevor Cooper and KADA for hosting the meeting and the socialising afterwards, and for allowing us to use the venue for our monthly committee meetings. For any members interested in the history of the club, the chairman’s report will be circulated with the minutes. In this, you will find a summary of the highlights of our founding and the past ten years.

The popularity of our last Sunday breakfast runs continues with the February run to Zucchini’s again breaking attendance records. The March 26th run will go to Berlin on the Keurbooms road. Following this on 9th April, we visit Kobus Halliday and his large car collection at Great Brak. For those of you who have not been there (and those who have!), this is a real privilege and well worth attending. The Knysna Motor Show takes place on 30th April and you are reminded to register asap. This year’s show promises to exceed expectations and one of the prime exhibitions will be the MMM MGs which will be in Knysna on their biennial tour. Should you miss them on the show, these pre WW2, 1929-1935 real classics will be based at Knysna Hollow and for any MG enthusiast, seeing them is a not-to-be-missed experience. The Jaguar Simola Hillclimb takes place over the weekend 5th – 7th May. Our members will again be asked to volunteer their services to raise funds for charity. As previously announced, our duties this year will be confined to the pits where our usual experienced team will manage the cars and where we will ask YOU to help us manage the public. Controlling people in the somewhat dangerous environment is an important task and we will need your assistance. CAPE CENTRES: The organising committee is putting the final touches to this event which promises to be another excellent occasion. We were recently disappointed that a likely sponsor was finally not able to support the event but they have promised future help. We are still negotiating with local companies and hope to obtain some assistance. There have been three ‘drop-outs’ but their places have been filled from the waiting list and we have a full complement of 70 cars. REGALIA: Gerry and Mary Page displayed the available club regalia on a fine stand at the AGM and will continue to do so at outings. Additional items are being investigated and will hopefully be available soon. If your MG does not have the distinctive club bumper badge, please consider ordering one of these from them. Despite his recent major surgery, Tony Lyons-Lewis is in Natal for the annual “D J”, proof that you cannot keep a good man down! This classic rally from Durban to Johannesburg for vintage and veteran motorcycles has a long history of which Tony became a special part last year when he was recognised for his ‘long service’ as the participant who had ridden the greatest number of events.. Ross Lawson has unfortunately had complications following his operation and requires further surgery. We wish him well and a speedy recovery. We look forward to seeing you on outings. Enjoy your MGs and happy motoring. Bruce.

EDITORIAL; Autumn is on the way, early mornings and evenings you can feel the slight chill in the air. Time is just flying and that is why now is so important. We so often say I cannot wait for this or that to happen, and that is really saying that we want time to go faster than it already is. I somehow wish we can hold onto time and just embrace every minute we have without wondering about or wishing for tomorrow to come - it will come soon enough. Somehow I have left out Fred and Joe’s birhdays in last month’s newsletter. Hope you had a wonderful time - both Feb babies. Please, let me have your birthdates for those whose names never appear in the lists. It is always enjoyable when somebody phones you for your bithday that you did not expect a call from. I think too from this month I will publish the birthdays a month ahead so we could have the info before the birhdays and not after. This month then will have the birthdates of March and April babies. I do want to thank the commitee for the lovely bunch of flowers they gave me at the AGM. I enjoy doing the newsletter and even more so when appreciation is shown, thank you for that. This is my third year doing it and I thought I would have been “fired” long ago, but still going, and again, thank you for everybody who contributes and specially to Fred Mullany for all the jokes. Without his input there would be nothing to laugh about.

PAST EVENTS Glentana Bring and Braai: Sadly the rainy weather kept most members away from the braai, and it turned out to be a lovely morning with no rain. Attended by 26 people, it was a much enjoyed day and a perfect ride out with the little cars.

(send in by Fred Mullany - Thank you Fred)

A man comes into the ER and yells: My wife's going to have her baby in the cab.' I grabbed my stuff, rushed out to the cab, lifted the lady's dress and began to take off her underwear. Suddenly I noticed that there were several cabs - - - and I was in the wrong one. Submitted by Dr. Mark MacDonald, San Francisco 2.At the beginning of my shift I placed a stethoscope on an elderly and slightly deaf female patient's anterior chest wall.. 'Big breaths,'. . . I instructed. 'Yes, they used to be,'. . . Replied the patient. Submitted by Dr. Richard Byrnes, Seattle , WA 3.One day I had to be the bearer of bad news when I told a wife that her husband had died of a massive myocardial infarction. Not more than five minutes later, I heard her reporting to the rest of the family that he had died of a 'massive internal fart.' Submitted by Dr. Susan Steinberg 4. During a patient's two week follow-up appointment with his cardiologist, he informed me, his doctor, that he was having trouble with one of his medications. Which one?'. ... . I asked.

'The patch...the Nurse told me to put on a new one every six hours and now I'm running out of places to put it!' I had him quickly undress and discovered what I hoped I wouldn't see. Yes, the man had over fifty patches on his body! Now, the instructions include removal of the old patch before applying a new one. Submitted by Dr. Rebecca St. Clair, Norfolk , VA
