Happy Holidays to each of you! However you celebrate, I wish you much joy, wonderful times with family and friends, peace and happiness. Enjoy your traditions and the sights and sounds of the seasons. This time of year I always like to spend a little time looking through my book “Christmas Joys” by H. Jackson Brown Jr. There are always a few gems for everyone celebrating their particular holidays to keep in mind to make it a lovely holiday for all. “Throughout the holiday season, give your family the gift of sweet disposition”. “Let go of problem you can’t solve, enjoy the season”. “Amidst the hustle and bustle, the stress and the strain, take time to be good to yourself”. “Remember that the loving holiday spirit in your home

depends more on the words you speak than the gifts you give”. One more thing about the holidays, for most of us they are highly anticipated and are one of the best times of the year, however for some they may not be happy times. Remember to give people a friendly “Hi”, a little more of your time and remember the importance of that smile. It can make a person’s day and be good for you too. I was watching the morning news on our Veterans Day and they were talking about the positive benefits of being kind. It’s also good for your health, lowers stress, blood pressure and makes both the giver and the receiver of a kindness happier and healthier. So, this is really the season to be kind and helpful.

December is such a busy time at our center. I hope you will join us for our many activities. Some highlights include our Santa Breakfast on Saturday, December 8th. The holiday party with great entertainment on Friday, December 14th at 12:30pm after lunch. Reading with Adams kids is back, Tuesday, December 11th from 11:00am to noon. Our community dining holiday feast with Chef Lori’s tasty offerings is on Monday, December 17th complete with Santa. On Tuesday, December 18th is our fantastic “We Three Kings” Holiday concert at Benaroya Hall featuring the Irish Tenors. A perfect holiday event for you and/or gift for family and friends to share together. Seahawks Friday with Steve Rabile is Friday, December 21st at noon. Our New Year’s celebration is on Monday, December 31st after lunch at 12:30pm. Ring in the New Year with Center friends.

2018 has been has been a really good year at the Center. Thanks for making it so. We have provided lots of programs and activities to keep us in the best possible shape. Our speakers have been outstanding in educating us on a variety of topics and showing us exciting places in the world. We have expanded services, done lots of planning for 2019 with our King County grant. We have upgraded and refreshed our aging equipment. Our fundraisers have been profitable and we are looking forward to equally good ones in 2019.

Again please be a part of a great December at your Center. Join us for all our offerings. Have a wonderful Holiday and remember to smile and be of good cheer.

Happy Holidays!

from this project and the times in the late 50’s and early 60’s. If you

have memories, you might like to share for possible inclusion in this

presentation that will be filmed in December. Please let the Center

receptionist know and you will have a chance to be a part of this

THANK YOU ALL This has been a very busy and amazing year. Thanks for all your support. Our auction was great, as have been our rummage sales, and other special events. We have added many new programs, increased services, and served more people than ever before. We are known as the “friendly center where all are welcomed and appreciated’’, a center where “friends meet friends”. We look forward to 2019 and all that it promises. YEAR END APPEAL WE NEED YOUR HELP! This Center is so important in the lives of thousands each year. We must raise about 80% of our budget each year here at the Center through fundraisers, grants, dues, class fees donations and on it goes. So, each November we send out our year end appeals to request your donations. These are usually tax deductible to you, but check with your financial advisor. Our goal is $20,000 by Monday, December 31st 2018 to meet our programming needs. We are grateful for your and the communities support of our mission, programs and services. We hope you will be as generous as your situation allows. FOOT CARE + NURSE CLINIC Nurse Keith is at the Center every Tuesday from 12:30pm to 4:30 pm to provide foot care. On the 2nd Tuesday of every month starting January 8th, he will perform wellness checks, checking blood pressure and glucose levels from 12:30pm till 2:00pm (glucose levels will be performed for people with their own glucose monitors). Please bring your glucose monitor and test strips for this service. He will provide foot care from 2:00pm till 4:30pm on the 2nd Tuesday.

ANNOUNCEMENTS DUES Dues are a great deal for members and a significant revenue source for the Center. Dues for 2019 are $50.00. Members pay less for many services such as foot care, most classes and trips. There is a member only luncheon in the fall. We treasure our

members. Members new and renewing this month receive coupons for free or reduced prices for seasonal Center activities in 2019. Those who choose to wait until January and beyond don’t receive the coupons. Dues are payable in full or two payments of $25.00 or four payments of $12.50. We appreciate the support of members. We have some participants that can’t afford membership. Some generous people, when renewing their membership, buy one or two additional that the staff can give to those that request an exemption. We can only do that if others donate to this program. Memberships are also great gifts to give to your friend that has everything or your family may want to give this as a wonderful Holiday gift.

KING COUNTRY FUNDING UPDATE We are so grateful to the voters of King Country who voted to provide funding to improve services to underserved populations and provide for capitol needs. We are moving forward in many areas. We have a new phone system, computers, a defibrillator, and printer and more items for the Center have been ordered. We are translating newsletters and flyers into additional languages, increased social work services, hired a part time admin assistant and more. We will keep you posted as we move forward.

BE HEALTHY THIS FALL The holidays are coming and with all the wonderful family times, parties, hustle and bustle of the season it is easy to not pay much attention to our good health. But it need not be that way. Come exercise at the center and take advantage of all our healthy choices. See our Bastyr doctors, get your teeth cleaned, try acupuncture and massage, join meditation, do Foot Care, and participate in drumming or wisdom circle. Join the walking group or do the daily balance class. We have it all here for your pleasure and good health. Don’t sit at home in front of the TV. Come to the center and be active.

FALL RUMMAGE SALE We had a wonderful October Rummage sale bringing in almost $4,000.00. Our sales are legendary and highly anticipated by the community. Our February sale will be here before we know it. So as you are doing your late fall holiday or winter clean up please remember your center and pack a bag or two to donate to us. We can make pickups in Ballard. Get rid of your don’t needs and let someone else find their treasures. Thank you!

CLOSED

The Center will be closed on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday,

December 24th, 25th and 26th for our holiday break. We will be

closed on Tuesday, January 1st for New Year’s Day and on

Monday, January 21st to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr Day. Plan

ahead and enjoy these times with your family and friends.

GUESTSPEAKERS Join us in the Harmony Dining Hall for free informative presentations after lunch. Drop-ins welcome. ADVENTURE LUNCHES: ARCTIC CIRCLE with AUTHOR JANICE VAN CLEVE Wednesday, December 5th, 12:00pm (Lunch) 12:30pm (Talk) No one actually lives at the North Pole. Inuit people, who live in the nearby Arctic regions of Canada, Greenland, and Russia, have never made homes at the North Pole. Janice has traveled all over the world and this presentation is our next stop. Don’t worry the Dining Hall will be nice and warm!

Policies and Procedures

PARKING A parking map is located at each reception desk. Please use the south and east center parking lots for short term parking and drop offs. When parking in front of the center do NOT block the sidewalk to the east of the courtyard, that is illegal. For all day parking please utilize street parking to the north of the center or paid parking at the Ballard Locks. When parking in the south parking lot, please do NOT park in front of the Center Van or the Dumpster. It costs us money and staff time every time a driver does this and it can stop garbage pickups and delay Center trips.

CENTER PHONES Please use your cell phones for your personal calls. The Center’s phones must be kept open for business calls. Too often our phones are being tied up by participants using them for their own personal calls. Our wonderful Senior Center is still a business and the phones are for business use. Thank you!

NOT A MARKETPLACE Our instructors are strictly prohibited from selling any products or services at the Center and will only give general information about the subjects they cover, not their business. Business cards may not be passed out, but you may ask for a card. Please report violations.

RENTALS Having an event, meeting, class, workshop, or get together? The Center has meeting spaces available. Rooms, including the kitchen, may be rented by the hour, after hours, and on the weekends. Rates are $15-$50 depending on room size. See Kristina for details and scheduling. Check out our website for rentals at www.BallardSeniorCenter.org

CREDIT CARDS Sometimes it may be easier to pay for a class, dues, trips, or special events by credit card/debit rather than cash or check. Transactions must be above $10. We accept Visa, MasterCard, and Discover Card. We do NOT accept American Express.

PETS & SERVICE ANIMALS Other than service animals, no pets are allowed in the Harmony Dining Hall and Kitchen due to health rules and no pets are allowed in classes or groups due to allergies. Exceptions may be approved by staff for classes such as educational seminars.

NON-DISCRIMINATION POLICY It is the policy of Ballard NW Senior Center and Sound Generations not to discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, religion, sex, age, national origin, marital status, sensory, physical or mental handicap, political ideology or sexual orientation in employment or applications for employment or in the administration or delivery of services or any other benefits. On request, people with disabilities will be p r o v i d e d w i t h r e a s o n a b l e a c c o m m o d a t i o n s .

KITCHEN POLICY The chef and crew prepare food, offering morning pastries, coffee, and tea. Check in at the Front Desk and we will serve you lunch. For safety reasons only staff and approved volunteers are allowed in the kitchen.

Ballard NW Senior Center Code of Conduct

No alcohol, tobacco, or drug use. No weapons of any kind are allowed on the premises.

That includes: guns, knives, explosives, pepper spray, etc. No use of lewd, profane, disrespectful, or other threatening

language or tone of voice. No abusive behavior, including verbal harassment,

menacing, or threatening demeanor, physical violence, sexual harassment, or other unacceptable social behaviors.

No destruction, damage, or theft of property at the Center or program site. No unauthorized use of Center property.

No interference with the operation of and no non-service animals in classes, programs, services, or Center activities.

No interference with the activities of the other clients, participants, volunteers, or the staff.

Must not have poor personal hygiene that interferes with participation of others in programs or activities.

No loitering or sleeping in the Center, or using the restrooms for hygiene needs.

Do not be in the Center after hours without authorization. Leave the Center in a timely manner when asked. The Center is registered with the Seattle Police Department.

All violations of the Seattle Municipal Code and Revised Code of Washington are prohibited. Violators of these conditions may be subject to arrest and prosecution.

This is not a transfer or hazardous waste station. No parking in a way that blocks sidewalk pedestrians. Never

illegally park on the sidewalk between the courtyard and trees.

Small Conference Center with Break-Out Rooms Do you know someone who is looking for a great place to have a party or family reunion? Please tell them that our Harmony Dining Hall and classrooms are available for rent on weekends and during the week in the evening. Our rates are very affordable, and all proceeds from the rentals go to support the center. Call 206.297.0403 and ask for Kristina for more information.

BUILDING & ROOM RENTALS

When you sign up for a trip you must pay a $5 non-refundable trip

fee. If the trip is $5 or less than $5, then you just pay that.

Final payment is due one week prior to the trip. Final payment is the cost of the trip less the $5 deposit. If final payment is not made, you forfeit your seat and deposit.

If you cancel your reservation less than one week before the trip is to depart, you forfeit your entire payment unless we can fill your space or you are canceling for certified illness.

If the trip is cancelled, deposits and payments will be refunded.
