Welcome to the Spring season of events at Cadogan Hall. We’re excited to welcome orchestras from around the world to the Hall, as well as our resident orchestra the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. We look forward to hosting a range of choral music and opera, including Verdi’s Aida. On the tenth anniversary of its first concert for Freedom from Torture, The Doctors’ Orchestra presents a programme featuring contrasting works by two strongly contrasting German Romantic composers. Opening with Brahms’ dark but heroic Tragic Overture, the concert also includes his ebullient Academic Festival Overture, two strikingly different works with adjacent Opus numbers. Interleaved with these is Richard Strauss’ sombre but also heroic tone poem Death and Transfiguration. The concert concludes, however, with Strauss in an ebullient mood. The Orchestra is joined by virtuoso soloist Alexander Edmundson for Strauss' thrilling First Horn Concerto and brings the evening to an ecstatic close with the second set of waltzes from his opera Der Rosenkavalier.

The patriotic sympathies of Sibelius led him to create some of his most enduring music, and tonight’s opener, the Karelia Suite, perfectly encapsulates the musical spirit of his home country, Finland.

Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 is performed by Latvian violinist Kristine Balanas, a musician of ‘eye-popping virtuosity’ (The Times) who has enthralled audiences on the global stage as a young rising star.

Rachmaninov, who had long left Russia since the 1917 Revolution, composed his Symphony No. 3 during his self-exile. The unashamed Romanticism of the piece is merged with the influence of haunting plainchant and moments of disruption in its melodies, unsettling the music and resulting in a strange melancholic yearning in the search for a true homeland.

Premier rock ’n’ roll legend Joe Brown has gone from strength to strength as his contemporary achievements continued to gather momentum.

He has continued to break box office records and recently received MOJO magazine’s coveted Outstanding Contribution To Music Award as well as a much-deserved MBE.

Joe has a new band for this tour however, more eclectic and with a line up including fiddle virtuoso Tom Leary, guitar/mandolin veteran Steve Simpson (a former member of Joe Brown’s Home Brew band in the early ‘70s), ace bass player Andy Crowdy and Joe’s 27-year stalwart band member, drummer, percussionist and singer Phil Capaldi.

The School of Classical Russian Ballet, formerly London Russian Ballet School, returns to Cadogan Hall with an exhilarating performance from the famous Don Quixote. The School is well-known for the high standard of its productions and this promises to be no exception with thrilling repertoire for everyone, full of warmth and excitement and one of the most famous pas de deux in in classical ballet.

Principal artists of the world-famous Bolshoi Ballet bring an extraordinary magic to the stage, joining the very talented young dancers.

This is a charitable evening to raise funds for the school’s bursaries – ‘Opening Doors’ and the outreach programme which engages young people in the world of ballet and classical music. The Young Lambeth Performers will again be on stage and 140 children will join the audience for free.

‘One of the most perfect symphonies ever written’ is how one critic described Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony. Spontaneous, energetic and inventive, it showcases the best of Beethoven’s so-called ‘middle’ period, as he struggled with encroaching deafness.

In the orchestra at the premiere of Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony was one Johann Hummel, himself a musician and composer. Hummel’s Trumpet Concerto is, for some people, THE trumpet concerto. Written for the inventor of the new keyed trumpet, Anton Weidinger, it is designed to show off the amazing special abilities of the new instrument. The Danish National Vocal Ensemble, highly acclaimed for its pure, transparent Nordic sound, presents a broad cross-section of Danish music in this concert. They explore the nation’s great choral tradition from the time of Christian IV’s rule in the 16th century, via Carl Nielsen, the father-figure of modern Danish music, to music of the present day.

Framing the programme are choral masterworks by J.S. Bach: three glorious motets serving as a reminder that one of the most influential composers on Bach was another Dane, the great 17th-century organist Dietrich Buxtehude.

2020 marks 250 years since the birth of Beethoven. His Mass in C Major of 1807 was commissioned by none other than Haydn’s former employer, Prince Nikolaus Esterházy who, it is understood, was not too pleased with the result, probably in part due to his unfamiliarity with Beethoven’s slightly darker, richer harmonic and melodic language.

Mozart’s Solemn Vespers of 1780 on the other hand depicts a simpler and characteristically vivacious emotional palette combining Mozartian wit and flare with sumptuous melodic lines, demonstrated most notably in the famous soprano aria Laudate Dominum.

Described as ‘classical music’s guitar hero’, Miloš Karadaglić received unanimous acclaim for his 2016 Beatles album and now makes a much-anticipated return to Cadogan Hall following the release of his new album – The Sound of Silence.

He is joined by members of the 12 Ensemble in a programme showcasing the immense diversity of the guitar: from Spanish classics and Latin American rhythms to Bach, Baroque dances and The Beatles. ‘Whether its Bach or McCartney, Schubert or Paul Simon, it’s all music to me and I love it.’

Lili Boulanger’s symphonic poem D’un matin de printemps opens a concert revolving around a composer who in her tragically short lifetime left an enduring legacy of works. Her D’un soir triste is a beautiful piece of late Romanticism, under which a yearning tension lies beneath in its disarmingly enchanting melodies.

Boulanger’s contemporary, Ravel, was a significant influence on the French tradition of the era. His Mother Goose Suite, as he put in his own words, evokes ‘the poetry of childhood’ with a sense of adventure and innocence in five charming fairy tale settings. Soloist Theodosia Ntokou performs Saint-Saëns’ Piano Concerto No. 2, a work with an exuberant display of stylistic variety.

Celebrating the July 2019 release of his latest album, Guesswork, Lloyd Cole visits Cadogan Hall as part of his UK/Ireland tour: From Rattlesnakes to Guesswork.

Lloyd collaborated with three other musicians on Guesswork, most notable of whom are two former bandmates – guitarist Neil Clark and keyboard player Blair Cowan – who found themselves working together on an album with Lloyd for the first time since The Commotions’ swansong Mainstream in 1987. However, anyone expecting a Commotions sound will be on the wrong tack: Guesswork is predominantly an electronic album. Lloyd, Blair Cowan and another long-time Lloyd associate, Fred Maher, have fashioned the Guesswork sound from classic and modern keyboard, modular and drum synthesizers, though guitars played by both Lloyd and Neil Clark do feature.

Lloyd’s ear for a melody, his lyrical smarts, and his unmistakable voice ensure these songs stand shoulder to shoulder with anything he has previously written.

The National Signing Choir Competition is coming to the capital for its fourth year. Signing choirs from all over the UK will take to Cadogan Hall’s stage and compete to be crowned NSCC Champions 2020.

Children’s choirs will be competing for the John A. Stephens trophy whilst the mixed-age choirs will be aiming to secure the coveted Morgan Astill Inspiration trophy.

Signing choirs use various formats of sign language to represent the lyrics to a wide range of songs creating a visual spectacular enjoyed by both deaf and hearing communities under one roof.

Beethoven’s Overture to his incidental music The Ruins of Athens opens the evening with a portrait ideal of the old world, sublimely represented in Classical style. Roman Kosyakov provides a thrilling interpretation to Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 2, an extraordinary and colossal work blending intense drama with a lightness of feeling in the exchanges between soloist and orchestra.

Written when the composer was barely 17 years old, Bizet’s Symphony in C major demonstrates the extraordinary prowess of a youth who had yet to make a name for himself. Inspired heavily by his teacher Gounod, there is versatility of expression demonstrated in the lyricism of the Adagio and the breathless tempo of the final Allegro vivo.

The easiest way to travel to Cadogan Hall is by public transport. Cadogan Hall is a two-minute walk from Sloane Square tube station, which is served by District and Circle lines, and one stop from Victoria station with mainline and additional tube connections.

Visit tfl.gov.uk to plan your journey. Sloane Square Tube Station Two minutes’ walk Upon exiting Sloane Square station, turn immediately right, passing the Royal Court Theatre. Cross over Cliveden Place and walk up Sedding Street towards Cadogan Hall.

BusFrequent bus services stop in Sloane Square and neighbouring streets including King’s Road, Sloane Street and Lower Sloane Street.

CyclingThere are several bike racks available in Sedding Street, outside Sloane Square tube station, on Sloane Square itself, on Sloane Street, and numerous others nearby. The nearest Santander Cycles docking station is in Sedding Street, approximately 20 metres from the building.

TaxiThere is a well-served taxi rank located on Sloane Square opposite the tube station.

ParkingA limited number of parking bays are available on Sloane Terrace, Wilbraham Place and Sedding Street after 6.30pm. There is an NCP car park at Cadogan Place.

Access

Cadogan Hall has a range of services to assist customers with access needs including provision for wheelchair users in the stalls. Customers in receipt of disability-related state benefits and members of our Access Scheme may be entitled to concessionary ticket prices for some events or a free personal assistant seat. Please contact the Box Office or visit cadoganhall.com/access for an Access Scheme registration form.

Wheelchair users If you use a wheelchair and wish to transfer to a seat, we regret we are not able to provide a member of staff to assist you. We can provide a dedicated space for your wheelchair or mobility aid. A lift is located to the right once inside the Box Office reception allowing access to a lowered Box Office counter. Foyer areas are on the same level as the Box Office and the lower foyer bar (Oakley Room) is accessed via a wide access lift. Seats within the stalls are accessed via a wide lift as are adapted toilet facilities.

The GalleryPlease note the lift provides access to all levels except the gallery seating areas. Gallery seats are only accessible via a staircase which consists of 62 steps. Customers with significant mobility problems are advised not to book Gallery seats.

Customers with hearing requirementsThe auditorium is fitted with an infra-red amplification system. This is not the same as a Loop System so switching your hearing aid to ‘T’ is not sufficient. Please contact a member of staff on arrival to be given an amplification aid.

Customers with sight impairmentGuide dogs are welcome to access the hall and auditorium but please do let us know prior to arriving at the hall so we may make any special arrangements if necessary. ‘Touch / Familiarisation’ tours can be arranged and we have unisex accessible toilets on all levels except the Gallery.

Food and drink

BarsCadogan Hall’s bars offer a large selection of wines, beers, spirits, champagne, soft drinks, tea and coffee.

You can pre-order interval drinks at the bar before the performance to have them ready and waiting for you after the first half.

Special occasion? You can also pre-order glasses of prosecco when booking online.

For the majority of performances, drinks may be taken into the auditorium in our compostable glasses. Please note that you will not be permitted to bring your own food and drink into the Hall.
