Location: Leeds
Salary: Circa £25,000 p.a. pro rata
Background
Welcome to Yorkshire, in partnership with local councils, successfully bid to host the first three stages of the
Tour de France 2014, which includes a Yorkshire Grand Départ, the first two days of racing and a further exit
stage from Cambridge to London. The aim is not just to bring the start of the most exciting road race to the
UK but also to use it as a catalyst to increase cycling participation for all ages and across the whole country. It
will build on the successes of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, showcasing the UK as a top
tourist attraction and event destination as well as ensuring everyone involved has a great experience by
providing a high quality, high profile wraparound cultural offer and visitor experience.
The Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO)
The Tour de France is owned by the ASO and is the world’s largest annual sporting event. The complexity of its
financial, logistical and technical elements creates both challenge and excitement for those delivering the race
for the ASO. Welcome to Yorkshire have been contracted to deliver the 2014 Tour de France Stages 1, 2 and 3
up to the M25. Transport for London will deliver the race from the M25 to Pall Mall.
Delivery of the event
As the lead local and national organisations responsible for overseeing its delivery, UK Sport has established a
limited company to deliver the event. The Event Safety Co-ordinator is part of the Event Operations team. The
delivery company will require a high-performing, experienced and focused multi-disciplinary team to deliver
the Tour De France 2014 in the UK from Grand Départ in Leeds to Stage 3. The team will need to work
coherently across a large number of local authorities in Yorkshire and the south-east of England, Welcome to
Yorkshire, Yorkshire Dales and Peak District National Park; to liaise with the government, Transport for
London and UK Sport, along with a wide range of stakeholders, and will report to the delivery company board.
The Event Safety Coordinator will report to the Event Safety and Security Manager.
Legacy
The race sits within a broader Yorkshire Grand Départ project being co-ordinated by Welcome to Yorkshire,
which includes a major arts festival and activities to create an economic and cycling legacy.
Job Overview
The Event Safety Co-ordinator will be responsible for supporting the Event Safety and Security Manager who
has the responsibility for all event safety, security and crowd management planning for the week leading up
to and three days of the Grand Départ in Yorkshire, along with the start of Stage 3 from Cambridge up to the
M25 when Transport for London takes over. The Event Safety Co-ordinator will provide a support role to
ensure that all aspects of safety have been adequately and appropriately planned across the whole event.
The role will work across Stage 1 and Stage 2 of the race and be predominantly focused on Temporary
Demountable Structures, The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (2007) and centrally
auditing the event management plan, based on the 21 individual plans from Local Authorities. The Event
Safety Co-ordinator will be responsible for auditing this information and presenting in a consistent format.
Key responsibilities/accountabilities:
• To work across all aspects of the programme to ensure safety has been adequately and appropriately
planned across the whole event.
• To support the Safety and Security Manager in co-ordinating the individual local authority event
management plans, centrally auditing and presenting in a consistent format.
• To assist in the creation and completion of the Event Safety plan, working in conjunction with the
local Safety Advisory Groups (SAG) across the 2014 Grand Départ.
• To support in the preparation and co-ordination of the Event Safety operations as part of the event
planning process
• Working with the Safety and Security Director and Manager in assuring the whole programme and
supporting delivery partners in their preparations and delivery.
• To support the Safety and Security Manager to work collaboratively across the Company and with
stakeholders, to ensure information is shared quickly and effectively as directed
• To support the Event Safety and Security Manager to provide day to day direction of the team’s
Graduate/Intern where required.
• To undertake other duties as directed by the Event Safety and Security Manager to ensure the success
of the event.
Person specification
Key knowledge, skills, experience and qualifications required:
• Recognised Health and Safety qualification at Level 3 or above (Level 5 event safety diploma, IOSH
Tech, NEBOSH) which must be Occupational in the Event Safety sector
• Experience of working in an event safety background
• Experience of interpreting, auditing and presenting safety information
• Ability to work under pressure and to tight timescales
• Project management, report writing and presentation skills

Desirable experience, competencies, behaviours and qualifications:
• Experience of working in partnership with local authority event teams, the police and transport
colleagues
• Experience of working in, or with Public Sector.
• An understanding of event safety management systems
• An understanding of cycling and road cycling events would be an advantage but is not essential.
Key requirements
We need someone who is available as soon as possible and commit for the duration of the contract and will
be available to attend regular meetings in the Leeds and Yorkshire area. We are happy to discuss secondment
proposals as appropriate.
