3rd Production Data Reporting and AnalyticsIt is easy to see where Norway would like to get to with its production data – a system where all data is gathered automatically from wells, youcan track each company’s flow through the system, and finally you can see who should get paid what as a tanker full of Norwegian oil leavesa port and everybody gets paid. All of the data should be exchanged using data standards, so the system is not beholden to any one software supplier. Norway is moving in this direction, but there are plenty of challenges with it, as our speakers explained.Magnus Svensson - Lead System Consultant with Dong Energy, talked about his work to get such a system working in Dong. The system hasnot proven as popular as you might expect with staff, since their data is how more freely shared around the company and you can see if itdoesn’t match up (so production is ‘lost’ somewhere between a processing platform and receiving terminal). The data also still needs to besecure, with restrictions on who can see what data when, to make sure company secrets don’t get revealed.Olav Revheim, Project Manager with EPIM (the E&P Information Management Association) talked about EPIM’s ongoing efforts to developdata standards for production data, so all the various IT systems can communicate freely together (even if the freedom then needs to be restrictedfor security reasons).Henri Blondelle - VP Global Business Development with CGG Data Management Services talked about his company’s work running‘DISKOS’, the Norwegian National Data Repository (which includes production data) – with new XML standards to make it easier to sendthe data and check it, and monthly production data being available to the public for download.Hector Escalona - Production Technical Consultant with Schlumberger, gave his vision of what can be possible if you had wide access to pro-duction data, in that you could actually optimise the field. “We have been doing this project for twoyears, with the goal to track production datafrom the well to where we book it in SAP,with a financial value,” said Magnus Svens-son, Lead System Consultant with Dong En-ergy.

“The goal is to track hydrocarbons from thewell to the bank, with a high degree of au-tomation.”

“This is the first time someone is doing this,being able to track everything within the samesystem and instance.”

He was speaking at the speaking at the DigitalEnergy Journal forum on May 6, “ProductionData Reporting and Analytics.”

“It has been a long journey, we have learneda lot, we have had some challenges.”

“My role in Dong is, I work in IT, but I workwith the whole value chain, from productionup to finance,” he said.

Value

The biggest challenge has been getting peopleto recognise the value this system brings to thecompany, to justify the effort individuals areasked to make.

The main benefit is that “we are ensuring ourreservoir engineers and production engineersare always working on the latest data,” hesaid.

This leads to more accurate forecasts of pro-duction and cash flow.

Having the data available on one system alsosaves a lot of time. “Picking [data] from dif-ferent domains and units within the companyis extremely time consuming and errorprone.”

Having the data available can stimulate a lotof improvement ideas. “A lot of people arestarting thinking in about new businessprocess. That's a big win. I expect we will finda lot of new processes invented.”

Also with production data fully mapped, itmeans you can see if the flows from the wellto the customer are the same for the entireroute, and spot problems.

“If you start combining production volumeswith sales volume and pipeline volumes, youmight see that you have deviations at an ear-lier stage than previously,” he said.

“When you have done this exercise, you no-tice all of the ugly things,” he said. “You havea better tool of explaining them.”

Connecting the company

The project also means that people in the com-pany start connecting together in new ways,for example reservoir engineers and financestaff, who don’t usually talk to each other,come together to discuss volumes.

“You see how the data you work with is goingbetween business units and assets,” he said.

The finance side uses a lot of different toolsto the reservoir side,” he said. “But it is thesame system, we don't duplicate numbers.That has been one of the goals.”

“It is good to have an understanding of howthings work in the bigger picture.”

Sometimes you discover that people fromsome areas of the company, or some disci-plines, are not so aware of what people in therest of the company does. “We work in verydedicated business units and don't share a lotof the information.”

Some people in the company have not beenvery keen on other people being able to seewhat they are doing. “All your different busi-ness processes are now exposed,” he says.

“We are opening up things, making every-thing much more visible,” he said. “A lot ofpeople are scared.”

Two well example

As an example, Dong in Norway is operatingtwo wells in partnership with other companiesin Norway, which connect to the Ula process-ing facility, where the flow is comingled withother flows.

“We are tracking hydrocarbons up to Ula andleaving Ula going into the Ekofisk processingfacility and finally ending up at the terminalin Teesside,” he said.

The Ula platform itself is operated by BP,which has responsibility of sharing and report-ing production data from Ula. Dong, as oper-ator of 2 wells connected to Ula, hasresponsibility for the well data.

The produced oil from Ula then goes to theEkofisk platform, operated by Cono-coPhillips, which has its own wells and is alsoa big processing facility.

Ekofisk is connected by pipeline to Teessideon the UK side (for oil), and to Emden in Ger-many (for gas).

Once the oil and gas leaves the field, the pro-duction data is handled differently, Mr Svens-son said. “You are leaving production domain,and going into pipeline dispatching with nom-inations, tariffs and so on. This is the placewhere you start putting value on things.”

It is very difficult to exactly match the gas youproduced from the wells with the gas you sellat the end of the process due to e.g. differentgas buffers along the dispatching route, hesays. “That is kind of a challenge.”

After Teeside, oil leaves as cargo in a ship.The cargo management processes are in manyinstances managed using documents, whichare scanned and sent by e-mail.

“If you look at this complete process from thefield to the terminal, I don't think you cantrack it in volumes. So we do a lot of massbalancing.”

System

System wise, the main focus at the moment atDong is optimising the data flow betweenbusiness units so people get the data theyneed, he said.“It’s a large system, it’s been a big struggle,especially on the business process side.”

All of the data is hosted in house, not on acloud. “We don't see a value in moving it out,”he said. However, “we have a lot of responsi-bility with having the data in-house, if some-thing happens.”

There are complex security challenges. Thereis commercial legislation governing what in-formation can be shared freely, and sometimesa competitor could get a commercial advan-tage from (for example) knowing when youhave a shutdown.

Dong – automating production data managementOil company Dong has spent 2 years developing an automated system for managing production data fromthe well to financial systems in Norway. Lead system consultant Magnus Svensson explained how it works

Norway’s E&PI n f o rm a t i o nManag emen tA s s o c i a t i o n(EPIM) is con-tinuing to de-velop itssystems to stan-dardise produc-tion datareporting amongNorway oil andgas companiesand the govern-ment.

“We are focussed on the vertical integration ofdata and processes from well to finance, and in-formation exchange between the different com-panies involved in the value chain,” said OlavRevheim, Project Manager with EPIM, speak-ing at the Digital Energy Journal Stavangerforum on May 6, “Production Data Reportingand Analytics.”

The purpose is to make it easier to do regula-tory reporting (to the Norwegian Petroleum Di-rectorate) and between the operators ofproduction facilities, separation facilities, tie-infacilities and partners.

The work can be done using standardised inter-faces, with a standardised schema for structureof the data.

“There has been work going on for 10 years totry to standardise an XML schema for sharingdata related to production,” he said.

“This scheme is owned and facilitated by EPIMwith a reference group.”

EPIM is a non-profit organisation formed andfinanced by Norwegian operating companies,with a mission to enable data sharing betweencompanies.

Vega field

As an example of how it works, consider, theVega field, a subsea development operated byWintershall, producing gas condensate and oil.

The unprocessed flow goes to the Gjøa facility,where the flow is mixed with Gjøa’s own pro-duction.

From there oil comes ashore in Mongstad, nearBergen, and gas goes to St Fergus, near Ab-erdeen.

“For Wintershall there is a need to follow thevalue from wells to the bank,” he said.

“They require some information from Gjøa re-lating to the field production volumes, as wellas data from Mongstad and St Fergus.”

NPD receives reports both from Vega (at a welllevel) and Gjøa (on a field level).The partners in each well can also receive re-

ports. “All of them would like to know at somestage the return on their investments and followthat from well to the bank,” he said.

As an indication of the complexity, this set-up,with a few wells tied into existing platforms,involves nine companies plus the NorwegianPetroleum Directorate, he said.

Systems

The NPD is requesting that production reportsare supplied in a new XML format, MPRML,by January 1 2016, he said.

The operators can send an automated XML re-port to ReportingHubhosted by EPIM, withdata automatically submitted on to partners asrequired.

EPIM has developed a ‘well defined firewall’which is accepted by all oil companies, he said.“So all the information exchange between thevarious companies is already established.”

“All of these assets and links in the chain havedifferent operators, with different IT systemswith firewalls all over the place.”

You need to make sure that the right data canget from one business unit to another, despitethe security restrictions. “Even if you do this[data] waterproofing between business unitsand assets, you have a need to get some datafrom production to other planning depart-ments,” he said.

“That's a big challenge with this type of setup,making sure the correct people have access tothe correct data,” he said. “You have thesecross plan security setups. You go in and ac-cess very specifically what you need.”

Mr Svensson was asked if he sees a contradic-tion between the talk of breaking people outof silos, and locking up data so people canonly see the data they need. “I agree there is acontradiction. We had that discussion initially,should you have everything open, and thatwas what people were used to. But then theproblem you have is all of these financial mat-ters which are clearly not open, so we need tolock it down.”

Data quality

It has been a challenge determining who is re-sponsible for the accuracy of the data, he said.

Most people are good at managing their ownprivate data and PC, but when it comes to or-ganisational data, they are less enthusiasticabout it.

There can be different versions of productiondata for different people. Reservoir engineerswant to know data for specific wells, manage-ment don’t care about that, they want fielddata.

Sometimes the system has well data regularlyupdated, but the field data lagging behind.

Parts which don’t fit

There are not many computer systems in themarket for managing production data like this,he said.

A common problem is when you find thatthere are aspects to your company businessprocesses which can’t be managed on the soft-ware you are using. Then you have to make adecision about whether to adapt the businessprocesses to the new system, or adapt the sys-tem to the business process, he said.

“We ask, should you write a lot of customcode, for example to handle some of thesevery special business processes?”

“We have been squeezing [business] intosome part of the system,” he said. “We don'twant to do a lot of customisation, it will raisethe cost.”

“A lot of the [software] tools are very assetcentric. They have been deployed on a givenasset and not cross asset. ”

EPIM – developing production data reportingNorway’s E&P Information Management Association (EPIM) is continuing to develop its systems tostandardise production data reporting, between Norway oil and gas companies and the government.

Norway’s oil and gas National Data Reposi-tory, DISKOS, has been operated by geo-science company CGG, with the support ofthe Norwegian software company Kadme,and the datacentre company Evry as subcon-tractor since the beginning of 2015.

One of the first moves by CGG was to convertthe data into the PPDM data model. By usingan open data standard, it should be easier forother applications to work with the data.

Migrating the Diskos data set “was a verylarge task, the first time it has been done inNorway,” said Henri Blondelle, VP Globalbusiness development for data managementwith CGG, speaking at Digital Energy Jour-nal’s Stavanger forum on May 6, “ProductionData Reporting and Analytics”.

CGG has implemented changes to make iteasier to submit data to the system and accessit. “We are able to receive data, preserve thedata and to guarantee security of the data,” hesaid.

Some new seismic data tools are still beingdeveloped, he said, including some to down-

load seismic data from part of a survey.Kadme is providing its WhereOil platform foraccessing DISKOS data over the internet.

The data is being hosted by Norwegian datacentre company Evry, and being physicallystored in Green Mountain, a deep under-ground storage site near Stavanger (and for-mer NATO bunker).

DISKOS is owned by 70 oil companies activein Norway. It is designed as a cost effectiveway for companies to fulfil their obligationsto provide data to the government, includingseismic and well data,

DISKOS comprises about a petabyte (1,000terabytes) of data, together with a set of appli-cations to handle, submit and access the data.

Production data

Production data does not have such large filesizes, he said, since it is only reported monthlyin Diskos.

However the diversity of data makes it diffi-cult, with data covering volume, mass, energyand density, with data readings taken at differ-ent places.There are often several data versions.

The NPD is introducing a new data format forsubmitting production data, called MPRML(for monthly production reporting mark-uplanguage), a version of Energistics standardPRODML.

Currently, most companies are using an ASCIIformat called COPEX which was establishedin 2000, which can be manually edited.

MPRML includes exactly the same data asCOPEX, but in a XML structure.

It has been possible to submit reports inMPMRL since 2013, but it will be obligatoryfrom January 1, 2016.

By using MPRML, it is easier to apply busi-ness rules to the data and check it, he said, anddevelop web services for data exchange. Thedata exchange is created automatically, sothere is less scope for manual editing. AlreadyStatoil and GDF Suez are reporting data usingMPRML, he said.

Now, COPEX submissions are converted intoMPRML as they are received at DISKOS, hesaid.

The data is submitted by uploading from aweb interface.

The system can output data in the same for-mat, whether it was originally submitted inXML or MPRML, ensuring a continuity in theproduction reporting tools available in ourweb interface.

Validated production data is freely availableto the public in Norway. You can downloaddata from different wells or fields in Excel for-mat, and then do analysis with it, using toolssuch as Spotfire or Tableau. “With less than10 clicks you can get access to very accurate,verified data,” he said.

Norway’s DISKOS – converted to PPDMCGG has taken over operations of Norway’s National Data Repository DISKOS since the beginning of this year.One of the first moves was to migrate more than 1Pb of data to the PPDM open and standard data model.

If an asset manager wants to know how the assetis performing, “often he needs to ask many differ-ent people. They give different answers because itis not integrated,” he said, speaking at the DigitalEnergy Journal Stavanger forum on May 6, “Pro-duction Data Reporting and Analytics”.

Mr Escalona sees that there has been a gradualevolution in upstream digital technology, fromtalking about the ‘digital oilfield’ (mainly acquir-ing and communicating sensor data in his view),to ‘integrated operations’ (adding in collaborationand managing KPIs), and finally to ‘asset optimi-sation’, which means all of that plus a full lifecycleperspective on the asset, with an increased engi-neering focus.

There are several challenges that are tied to thisevolution: new data sources, types and time fre-quency, the need to manage simulation models, in-tegration between applications and improvedvisualization techniques.

As part of a full lifecycle perspective, typical ques-tions staff might want to answer would be, whathappens when production starts-up or is shut-in?Are the compressors, meters and pumps workingoptimally? Is the gas lift or ESP optimized? Doesthe flowline need to be pigged – and if so can it bedelayed? Is there a hydrates risk - if yes – whenand where? What will the potential volume of aslug be? Can facilities cope? Is the waterflood orEOR effective? What is the production forecast?How much are we producing, where is it comingfrom, what are the causes of shortfalls?

“80 per cent of the time we are in reactive mode.It would be better if “we have enough time to lookat what we can do before something happens,” hesaid. “What if we can see what we need, in timeto respond?”

The typical production performance control work-flow is to capture the necessary data, check it, dis-play it, analyse it, produce results and recommendactions, he said. Only the last few steps add anyvalue. It would be better if the first steps were doneautomatically.

This would mean that problems could be detectedfaster (such as something which causes productionto drop), that means less loss of revenue.

One important task is comparing the performanceof different wells. By mapping KPIs you can (forexample) identify regions of high gas oil ratio, lowwater cut, low recovery factor. It would be usefulif the KPIs were generated automatically.

“We can do more advanced analysis comparingwells against each other,” he said. We can identify,“which are candidates for workover, outperform-ing wells, wells that need attention, over injectedor under injected wells.

You can look at the value of well interventionsover the well’s lifetime, taking into account thegains (and losses) from those interventions and ag-gregating the data.

You can do a ‘decline curve analysis’ to forecastproduction.

Additionally, diagnostic tools that have been usedin medicine for a long time, for example to makepredictions about how likely someone is to havecancer bearing in mind various factors, such as X-ray results and whether the person smokes.

“We have information we can use to create prob-abilistic models and help us be more proactive,”he said.

If you have been operating ESPs for e.g. 10 years,you can use all those years of learning to get a bet-ter understanding of your current situation, or builda model which can provide an alarm at exactly theright time.

“We need some architecture to do that,” he said.“It’s not easy to do.”

The systems to understand what is going on canbe built on top of an ‘enabling Engineering frame-work’, he said. For example, with the core datamanagement tools, data exchange standards, se-curity systems, surveillance systems and softwaredevelopment kits and modular ‘building blocks’,each based on best practises, to create a solutionfor a specific need.

The planning can happen at different time scales,equipment and slug monitoring going in a fastloop, gas lift and pump optimisation in a mediumloop, and field management in a slow loop.

“There's not a single recipe for all the needs in thefield - there are different stakeholders and the re-sponse time is different,” he said.

“Depending on the field, one aspect will be moreimportant than others. For a particular asset, weneed to focus maybe on flow assurance or well in-tegrity.”

And still, getting people to collaborate and changeis “the toughest part,” he said, particularly when itinvolves people working together who have notworked together in the past, such as reservoir andfacilities people.

Data

“Sometimes [our systems] are like a black box, it’snot clear how data came in, how data is calcu-lated,” Mr Escalona said. “We need more clarityabout that.”

“We have a lot of data sources. We have many dif-ferent data types, data frequencies. “There's an in-creased volume of data to download.”

A lot of staff are using the data to build models.“We want to know, what is the most updatedmodel, what is the validated information we cantrust,” he said.

“Information spreads internally, the different ver-sions being stored in different file repositories.”

Avocet

Schlumberger’s “Avocet software platform” canhelp make it easier to manage production data andengineering workflows, including the EPIM’s newformat MPRML. It can be used for both daily andmonthly data reporting. There is a new MPRMLexporting tool as an extension to the software.

The exporting tool has been tested with a Norwe-gian operator.

The Avocet system can be used to hold all of yourproduction data. You can make daily and monthlyreports for partners, and monthly reports for gov-ernment.

You can let it submit reports automatically to(EPIM’s) ReportingHub automatically from theAvocet system.

About EPIM

EPIM is a non-profit membership organization established in November 2007, and governed by the operators on the NCS. Norsk olje & gass approved the establishment of EPIM, an organization that would provide the industry with effective management of common information and communication technology (ICT) solutions.

EPIM’s main objective is to facilitate the best possible flow of information between operators, part-ners, authorities and other stakeholders.
