The world’s tallest building, which hadbeen hastily renamed in honour of theruling family of neighbour andbenefactor Abu Dhabi, opened on timeand on budget and to much praise.

It also signalled an end to the worst yearin terms of negative publicity that theemirate had ever had to endure.

The threat of a possible default on amassive multi-billion dollar loan bygovernment-owned Dubai Worldthreatened to plunge the world into adouble-dip recession.

It was only the bailout from Abu Dhabiwhich helped pull Dubai World, and in turnthe emirate itself, back from the brink.

Burj Khalifa stands at the heart ofDowntown Dubai, which includes anumber of other iconic buildingsincluding one of the emirate’s moststylish and sophisticated new hotels TheAddress Downtown Dubai.

The Address Downtown Dubai was adouble award winner at last year’s WorldTravel Awards, securing “Dubai’s LeadingLifestyle Hotel” and “Middle East’sLeading New Hotel”.

It has also been nominated for a clutchof awards at tonight’s ceremony, including “Middle East’s LeadingBusiness Hotel”, “Middle East’s LeadingHotel” and “Middle East’s Leading HotelApartments”.

The hotel is 63 storeys high and has 196rooms and 626 serviced apartments. Italso has seven world-class restaurants, modern meeting and event venues, a spa,a fitness centre and swimming pools.

Downtown Dubai also includes The DubaiFountain and The Dubai Mall, the world’slargest shopping and entertainmentcentre.

This year there has been a renewedoptimism in the emirate, with the soundsof diggers and cranes once again part ofthe background hum of the city.

One of the key areas where there hasbeen renewed optimism – and growth –is in the aviation sector.

Middle East

The opening of the Burj Khalifa at the startof this year marked a turning point for Dubai.

Ian Scott, UK director of Dubai TourismCommerce Marketing, said: “There wasphenomenal growth in 2009, a lot ofdevelopment going on at the airport.

“Terminal 3 opened and Emirates movedin and it’s hugely increased the capacitythere.”

T3 doubled the capacity from 30mpassengers per year to 60m.

As well as the development taking placeat Dubai International Airport, the £33bnnew airport complex being built nearJebel Ali Port is back on schedule after afew wobbles last year.

Al Maktoum International Airport, about40kms from Dubai downtown, formspart of another Dubai mega-projectincorporating hotels and propertiesknown as Dubai World Central and willopen for cargo in June and forpassengers in 2011.

It will (almost inevitably) be the biggestairport in the world when it finally opensin about 2025, with five runways, threeterminals and up to four planes landingat the same time all day every day.

It will be able to handle up to 160mpassengers a year (the world’s busiestinternational airport Atlanta, handled90m last year).

It will become the world’s largest cargohub and be able to handle all newgeneration aircraft including the A380.

DWC is being described as a “city-within-a-city” and to get an idea of scale isalmost twice the size of Hong KongIsland.

DWC is designed to support Dubai’saviation, tourism, commercial andlogistics requirements until 2050 andbeyond, transforming the United ArabEmirates, and indeed the region, into oneof the most powerful global centres forcommerce, logistics and tourism.

Figures recently released by DubaiInternational Airport also show a sharppick-up in passenger traffic in February,by 22.6 per cent increase compared to

the same month last year. The airporthandled 3,640,323 passengerscompared to 2,969,569 passengers inFebruary 2009.

The strong growth in February followsthe record monthly passenger traffic ofover 3.8 million in January, bringing theyear-to-date passenger throughput to7,501,848, up 19.7 per cent over thesame period in 2009.

Last month, the airport saw a growth of17 per cent over January 2009 figures.

The percentage increases are sharply upon 2008 figures when passenger trafficat Dubai International increased from34.34 million in 2007 to 37.44 million, ayear-on-year growth of 9 per cent.

This optimism is borne out by DubaiAirshow organiser F&E Aerospace, whichis expecting to attract a record numberof business aviation service providersand manufacturers to the Middle EastBusiness Aviation exhibition andconference, from 7 to 9 December 2010.

The recession forced the organisers tosuspend last year’s show, but the onebefore in 2008 attracted some 250exhibitors from 30 countries and over5,500 visitors, with more thanUS$1.5billion worth of deals struck.

The fourth running of the series inDecember promises an increase inexhibitor numbers to some 350, judgingby an already strong interest in the eventamong business aviation companies, and commitments to date.

First-time exhibitors include Honeywell,AN Aviation and Rizon Jet, which arejoining returning organisations such asAbu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC),Jet Aviation, Sikorsky and Al JaberAviation.

Up to 85 business aircraft will bedisplayed on the outdoor static aircraftpark, which will also feature morecompany pavilions than in previousshows.

Alison Weller, Managing Director of F&EAerospace, commented: “With a recentreport predicting an annual growth ratefor the Middle East business aviationmarket of more than six per cent overthe next 10 years, the region will surelysee an increase in business aviationservice providers to cater to thisdemand.”

The one mega project which has slowed, according to official sources, isDubailand.

The mega-resort, twice the size of WaltDisney Resort, was due to open in 2007and has now been put back until 2012 atleast.

Dubailand will have an area of 278 km2

(107 sq mi) and include 45 “megaprojects” and 200 sub projects. To date, there are currently 22 projects under

development, but new projects getadded on an almost daily basis.

Despite the recession, the United ArabEmirates suffered only a 1 per cent dropin the number of tourists in the first threequarters of the year.

According to DTCM’s Scott, theemirate’s vision of 15m tourists – upfrom the current 8m – was still on targetdespite the dip.

DTCM launched a new kids go freecampaign earlier this year in a bid tokeep the target on track.

Last year’s promotion attracted an extra30,000 visitors to the emirate – DTCMhopes to double this figure with thelatest promotion. The campaign offersfree holidays for children under 16between May 14 and September 30.

DTCM held a meeting with Dubaihoteliers in April as part of itscontinuous efforts to take stock of thecurrent tourism industry developmentsand discuss various initiatives to boostvisitors’ number to the emirate andhotel occupancies.

And in another boost to the recovery ofthe emirate, the STR report revealedthat Dubai ranked first in the world forthe average room rate (ARR) in the

month of February 2010 with hotelaverage room being US$252. It held thesame status in the previous threemonths with the average room ratebeing US$250 in January, December2009 US$235 and US$236 inNovember 2009.

Abu Dhabi had a boom year last year, playing host to its first F1 event and theopening of the spectacular Yas Hotel onSaadiyat Island.

It was one of the few countries in theworld that managed to buck theinternational trend and actually increaseroom rates, mainly due to an acute lackof supply.

On average, its year-on-year rates roseby more than 33 per cent to become themost expensive in the world at £173.

This year, it hopes to consolidate on thatsuccess with a raft of new hotels, theopening of Ferrari World, the World RallyChampionships and the 2010 Formula 1.

It will be showcasing all that the capitalof the United Arab Emirates has to offerat May’s Arabian Travel Market in Dubai.

The Abu Dhabi pavilion will take up1,400 square metres and will be thelargest of any stand at Arabian TravelMarket.

“This is our biggest trade statement yetthat this destination is evolving,” saidMubarak Al Nuaimi, InternationalPromotions Manager, Abu DhabiTourism Authority.

“We have this year already welcomed ahost of new attractions to Abu Dhabiand more hotels and resorts will open, the world’s biggest indoor theme parkwill be launched and new events will beintroduced before the year is out.

“It is a defining year in our ambitions toincrease hotel guest stays to theemirate by 10 per cent this year to reachthe 1.65 million mark.”

National airline Etihad Airways, has justannounced it will commence flightsfrom Abu Dhabi to Baghdad on April 26,subject to government and regulatoryapprovals, becoming the first airline inthe UAE to fly to Iraq.

Etihad will operate five return servicesper week to Baghdad, operated by two-class Airbus A320 aircraft, and willexpand its operation with two additionalA320 return services to a second Iraqdestination – Erbil – from June 1,subject to government and regulatoryapprovals.

Elsewhere in the Gulf region, Qatar hasre-emphasised its commitment toupscale and business tourism which itoutlined at World Travel Market inNovember.

The tiny gas- and oil-rich Gulf state saidit aimed to increase tourism by 20 percent within the next five years.

Ahmed Al Nuaimi, Chairman of QatarTourism Authority said: “Qatar willharness its resources to build modern, sophisticated world-class facilitiesmaking it the best destination forconferences and internationalexhibitions.

“The massive investments by thegovernment in the tourism sector havehelped Qatar become a global hub forquality and excellence at theinternational level.”

There are a number of tourism projectsunderway in Qatar, including theconstruction of two new conferencecentres and cultural projects as well asnew hotels to tap into the fledglingleisure sector.

Al Nuaimi added: "We recognise that ourcountry needs to be positioned as morethan a destination for business travel.”

This year marks the halfway point forOman’s 2020 vision, which involvesestablishing the sultanate as a regionaltravel and tourism hub, increasing thecontribution of the tourism market toGDP to not less than 3 per cent, increasing the participation of the privatesector and activating its role in thedevelopment of various tourism.

Oman has not been immune to theglobal financial crisis, but early signs of

recovery are expected by the middle ofthis year.

By then, Oman will have geared up forthe recovery with a number of tourismprojects underway ranging from travelaccommodation projects to airportexpansions, including at least US$3billion earmarked for the expansion ofthe country's international airport andbuilding three new ones in other cities.

Bahrain unveiled ambitious tourismplans for 2010, which it will reveal inmore detail at this year’s Arabian TravelMarket.

The Kingdom aims to generate someBD355million (£615m) in tourism thisyear via a number of big projects, including a desert camp, ‘Tourism Oasis’,which will be set up near the Al AreenWildlife Park.

The World Travel Awards acknowledges and celebrates thoseorganisations that have made the greatest contribution to the globaltourism and travel industry. It also recognises those brands that aredriving the industry to greater heights and innovation in travel.

Celebrating its 17th anniversary this year, the awards has grown into a truly globalsearch for the very best travel and tourismbrands, with the winners from the sixregional ceremonies progressing to theWorld Travel Awards Grand Final in Londonon 7 November.

Last year, 183,000 travel professionalsregistered to vote and participate in theprestigious World Travel Awardsprogramme – a phenomenal 10% rise inregistrations compared to the year before.

This record number is conclusive evidencethat World Travel Awards has become the“Oscars” of the global travel industry.Graham E. Cooke, Founder and President,World Travel Awards, said: “World TravelAwards is a unique benchmark for industryquality and business excellence in everyregion and sector.”

“The increase in registered voters, despite aglobal recession, demonstrates the vitalrole of performance delivery in achallenging and highly competitivemarketplace,” he added.

This level of accountability makes theWorld Travel Awards one of the highestaccolades in the travel business and is whythe award ceremony is broadcast by BBCWorld News and other networks to over254 million households worldwide andattended by the industry’s global decisionmakers.

For the tourism trade, winning a WorldTravel Award is more than an award – it isan endorsement from the thousands ofprofessionals from around the globe, aswell as a gold seal to the consumer of travelexcellence guaranteed.

The World Travel Awards has continuouslyevolved, expanding the number of awardsas the industry has grown. There are nowover 1,000 different categories – anunderstandable number seeing how theindustry has diversified and given the factthat there were over 3,600 differentnominees last year.

And as confidence returns to the globaleconomy, the World Travel Awards will bethere to reward those travel and tourismplayers that spearhead the recovery.
