Thank you
The 5th edition of the Cape Construction Expo held in August was truly the must-attend event of the 2017 construction calendar and saw an unprecedented number of building and construction professionals congregating to identify untapped opportunities, gathering information on the latest trends and supporting the drive for sustainable growth within the Western Cape’s built environment sector.
This year saw the exhibition increase by 30% and for the first time introduced six dedicated zones across Concrete, Construction, Digital Construction, Mechanical Electrical and Plumbing, Surfaces and Finishes, and Tools and Equipment - which ensured that visitors were able to navigate their way through the show more efficiently.
A host of CPD points were earned as Architects and Quantity Surveyors took advantage of the free-to-attend professional workshops and the Western Cape’s first ever Contractor’s Corner provided small to medium contractors with hands-on-training, equipping their businesses for further success.
Our vision to provide a platform for positive growth and collaboration within the industry was achieved and we anticipate many new and exciting elements at next year’s show.
We look forward to welcoming you in 2018!
Warm regards,
Tracy-Lee BehrPortfolio Director: Built Environment

Initiative
Stakeholder Engagement Forum highlights
Panellists including Rob Kane, Chairman of the Cape Town Central Improvement District and Nomzamo Mnqeta, Director of Built Environment Management at The City of Cape Town’s Transport and Urban Development Authority, discussed the importance of transit-oriented development and how it can change, develop and stimulate urban spaces. It was highlighted that the newly formed Transport and Urban Development Authority has combined transport and human settlements into one department to streamline development.
Solly Fourie, Head of Department at the Western Cape Department of Economic Development and Thando Mguli, Head of Department at the Western Cape Department of Human Settlements, contributed to the round table discussion as the topic of provincial investment and development was broached.
The importance of public and private sector was further highlighted as the discussion turned towards the Garden Route Rebuild Initiative. Schalk Carstens, Director of Disaster Risk Reduction at the Western Cape Department of Local Government outlined the disaster response efforts conducted around the 2017 Knysna fires and Dr. Hildegarde Fast, Chair of the Garden Route Rebuild Initiative explained how the local construction sector can contribute to the rebuild initiative.
The Smart Buildings & Infrastructure Western Cape Summit took place on 23 August at the CTICC. The summit looked at the future of buildings in the Western Cape, from technology evolution to new value adding services, better collaboration, smart maintenance, local and international lessons learned, infrastructure transformation and sustainable strategies. The summit made it easy for decision-makers involved in the development, design and delivery of new and existing buildings to catch the SMART buildings wave, reaping substantial rewards along the journey.
SESSiON 1: pLANNiNG FOR RESiLiENCE
This session highlighted why Smart Buildings can lead to increased cyber risks, why Blockchain is becoming increasingly relevant for real estate and the vital role governments have to play in building the cities of tomorrow. It further went on to explore the changes to be expected in the new buildings act and radical steps designers should to take.
SESSiON 2: CREATiNG vALUE
The session kicked off with a hot topic and disruptive technology, blockchain technology, and highlighted how we can generate revenue from surplus solar power using cryptocurrency. We then explored 10 steps to digital success on projects. It provided insight on a structured approach to setting up projects for success and demonstrated that getting data right does not have to be difficult or require significant capital outlay.
SESSiON 3: DELivERiNG SMART BUiLDiNGS & iNFRASTRUCTURE
The final session kicked off with an overview of what digital tools are available to landlords, the importance of integration and lessons learnt from large scale deployment. We then had a detailed case study on a new 61 acres project in Mauritius. The project includes a social innovation hub and the use of technologies and practices that advance the wellbeing of individuals and the community.
