The World Roller Games are a project that has been taking shape for many years in the FIRS: a
greatdeterminationandagreatcouragehavecontributedtorealizethisfirstedition,possiblealso
thanks to the deep relationship between the FIRS and the City of Nanjing, its rulers and its citizens.
With these premises we are sure that the World Roller Games will leave an indelible trace in the
history of world skating and in the city of Nanjing. It had never happened before in any place:
forthefirsttime,theGothaoftheWorldSkatingwillcompetehere….atthehighest levels..and
in excellent facilities! The agonistic results of the event will certainly go far beyond expectations
and will match up with the audience that will warmly embrace our athletes with the well-known
Chinese hospitality.
Nanjing is a city to discover, with its millenarian culture and its amazing fascination: I am sure that
these thousands of athletes and coaches, who will come from all over the world for this historic
event, will be able to enjoy this wonderful city and the wonderful opportunities that it will disclose.
And let’s not forget the many supporters that will convey in the ancient capital from August 26 to
September 10 to admire the best FIRS athletes competing for world titles.
The citizens of Nanjing will be able to appreciate all our disciplines, some of which they have already
known in the past years, during the YOGs of 2014 and during the 2016 Speed Skating World
Championships: the Roller Games will be a further bond in the legacy that FIRS and Nanjing, the

NANJING MAYOR’SGREETINGS
Ladies and gentlemen,
Friends from the media,
After nearly a year of diligent preparations, the time has finally arrived to hold FIRS World
Championships - Roller Games 2017. On behalf of the Nanjing Municipal People’s Government and
the Organising Committee for WRG 2017, I would like to warmly welcome all our friends from the
media who have come here from all over the world.
Nanjing is a world-famous city known for its time-honoured history and culture. Situated in the
eastern part of China, it is also a central city and a megacity marching towards modernisation and
internationalisation. This land boasts a unique blend of ancient appeal and modern civilisation. This
is where profound culture and youthful vigour integrate. Roller sports are youthful, fashionable
and healthy urban sports that integrate recreation, physical activity, competition and leisure. These
sports are becoming popular among people from all walks of life, particularly the youth.
Roller sports were highly praised by IOC President Thomas Bach when they were presented during
the Sports Presentation Programme of the 2nd Youth Olympic Games held in August 2014 in
Nanjing. That was the time when Nanjing developed a bond with roller sports. In September 2016,
the FIRS Roller Speed Skating World Championships successfully took place in Nanjing. Our city
stoodoutasthefirstholderofthetitle-“WorldCapitalofRollerSports”–asconferreduponbythe
FIRS. This September, the FIRS World Championships - Roller Games 2017 will make its debut in
the same city. We will see athletes gathering in this ancient capital from all over the world to share
the joy of roller sports and jointly create a brilliant future for these sports. We believe that with the
strong support of the FIRS and through extensive coverage by the media, Nanjing will surely deliver
an excellent and splendid gala of roller sports to their global fans.
I wish the Games a complete success and all of you a pleasant stay in Nanjing.
MIAOMayor of Nanjing Municipal People’s Government
President of the Organising Committee for WRG 2017

THE CITY OF NANJINGNanjing – City of EmperorsNanjing is a city situated in the heartland of the lower Yangtze River region in China, which has
long been a major centre of culture, education, research, politics, economy, transport networks and
tourism. It is the capital city of Jiangsu province of People’s Republic of China and the second largest
city in the east China region. The inner area of Nanjing enclosed by the city wall is Nanjing City (南
京城), with acreage of 55 km2, while Nanjing Metropolitan Region includes surrounding cities and
areas.
Nanjing has a prominent place in Chinese history and culture, having served as the capital of various
Chinese dynasties, kingdoms and republican governments dating from the 3rd century CE to 1949.
[6] The city has a number of other names, and some historical names are now used as names of
districts of the city; among them there is the name Jiangning or Kiangning (江寧,literally“Yangtze’s
Peace”),whoseformercharacterJiang(江, River) is the former part of the name Jiangsu and latter
character Ning (寧,simplifiedform 宁, Peace) is the short name of Nanjing. When it was the capital
