In April and May, Melbourne recital centre is the best place to hear your favourite music and musicians. In the intimacy of the salon you’ll enjoy masterpieces of chamber music performed by our local heroes, part of our year-long celebration of Melbourne’s finest ensembles (plus some friends from other cities). Music can be an adventure in time travel – in the space of a month you can discover the Baroque beginnings of opera with ludovico’s Band or the music of today with syzygy ensemble.

It’s a case of cool Britannia in April when Melbourne recital centre and the Melbourne symphony orchestra present the Metropolis New Music Festival 2013. As london again resumes the mantle of the cultural capital of a radically different world, what’s the sound of the city? The Seasons, a 12-movement piano suite by tchaikovsky, has been arranged for two guitars by edward Grigoryan for his sons Slava and leonard, who together are one of the world's leading guitar duos. With its movements characterising the 12 months of the year, The Seasons comprises mini melodic showpieces that were commissioned to be printed as monthly instalments for readers of the music magazine, Nouvellist in 1876. this unique arrangement breathes new life into the classical guitar repertoire while retaining the original masterpiece, presenting it in a totally different setting and giving it a new voice. Metropolis New Music Festival 2013 brings the sound of contemporary London to Melbourne Recital Centre. London’s splendour and squalor is

the ultimate hotbed of creativity and this year’s festival explores this vast maze of music. The sonic magic of composer/conductor/pianist Thomas

Adès’ chamber and orchestral music meets the iconoclastic electronica of Matthew Herbert. Drum ‘n’ Bass, luminous choral music, DJs, politics and

chamber opera easily (and sometimes uneasily) share the same space.

Three leading composer/performers will be in residence to present their works and a world wide web of their musical influences and obsessions

in concerts, talks and DJ sets.

Composer, DJ, performer, producer and agent provocateur, Matthew Herbert is an idiosyncratic voice in contemporary music. ‘Matthew Herbert makes music out of sound. Specific sounds. Simple as that seems, it is a practice that was only possible as a result of one of the most radical and transformative inventions of the 20th century – that of magnetic tape. Once that was introduced into the field of recording, music could be sourced from the entire sonic world, recontextualised, reshaped. The possibility now existed to make anything out of anything… One Pig, is perhaps Herbert's most remarkable and challenging sonic foray into the politics of consumption. The album follows the life, death and ultimate fate on

a dinner plate of a single animal. Herbert spent several months on a farm collating the necessary sounds, from its eerily quiet birth, to the noisy trauma of feeding time, to its removal and solitary, shuffling last journey to the abattoir, alone in a trailer.’ David Stubbs

Herbert has remixed musicians as diverse as Bjork and Mahler, has scored film, dance and theatre and is now Creative Director of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop.

Matthew Herbert presents three evenings – One Pig, The End of Silence, and a new commission for Melbourne Recital Centre’s Made of Music project – and a DJ set.

Mira Calix is not afraid to challenge musical convention or cross genre boundaries. She creates music of unconventional beauty, working with found sound, electronics, voice and classical instrumentation. Her prolific and innovative approach to composition has led to a critically-acclaimed catalogue of work. She has been commissioned to set both the words of one of Britain’s most acclaimed and award winning contemporary poets, Alice Oswald and that of its most established, William Shakespeare, to music. She has released music alongside avant-garde classical composers like Sir Harrison Birtwistle and Jonathan Harvey and collaborated with

indie innovators such as Malcolm Middleton (Arab Strap) and Brian McComber (Dirty Projectors). She has supported Radiohead on a leg of their Kid A tour and composed Nunu for the London Sinfonietta and a chorus of insects. She has release five albums on Warp Records.

Two concerts and a DJ set will showcase the breadth of Mira Calix’s work, including a brand new composition commissioned by Melbourne Recital Centre for its Made of Music project.

Thomas Adès

‘Thomas Adès’ writing creates visions of musical possibility that are new for today, or for any time.’ Tom Service, The Guardian (UK)

As composer, conductor and pianist, Thomas Adès is one of the major musical figures of our time. Born in 1971, he was only 36 when the Barbican in London presented a retrospective festival of his work. He has been the focus of Radio France's annual contemporary music festival, and Helsinki's Ultimo festival. His opera The Tempest was commissioned by the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and will soon be premiered at the Metropolitan Opera, New York. Simon Rattle programmed Adès' Asyla for his opening concert as Artistic Director of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in September 2002, and subsequently commissioned one of the major works featured in the 2012 Metropolis New Music Festival, Tevot.

Adès' music has attracted numerous awards and prizes, including the Grawemeyer Award (2000), of which he is the youngest-ever recipient.

He is the only composer to have won the Royal Philharmonic Prize for large-scale composition three times. Following his appearance with the MSO at the 2010 Melbourne Festival, the Orchestra and Melbourne Recital Centre are proud to present Thomas Adès, a major presence in the world of music.

camilla tilling's voice and stage presence have critics using superlatives like 'radiant', 'spellbinding' and 'flawless'. is it any wonder then that she's often called on to play angels and princesses?

tilling is one of those sopranos who prioritise purity of sound and phrasing over sheer power, not that this has stopped her from treading the boards in the biggest and most prestigious opera houses – the Metropolitan, covent Garden and Glyndebourne – in repertoire ranging from Figaro to rosenkavalier and beyond. On record, she has worked with early music specialists, and in recital she’s performed at Wigmore and carnegie Hall among many others. tilling has made a speciality of the late-romanticism of richard Strauss, bringing a disarming freshness and bloom to some of the most voluptuous lieder in the catalogue. these songs find Strauss in more reflective, serene and candid moods than his operas. Strauss writes rapturously for the female voice (he was married to a soprano), setting a vocal line like a gem within the finely-wrought accompaniment. even more luscious are the Seven early Songs of alban Berg, where the voice soars over a surreally beautiful harmonic landscape. Berg and Strauss’s underrated Viennese contemporary, alexander von Zemlinsky, wrote a handful of Waltz-Songs, lilting showcases for a gorgeous voice. no concert of German lieder is complete without the work of the master songwriter, Schubert – songs in which tilling, spontaneous and smiling, is ‘a joy to the ear’.

in 2009, the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra presented a sold-out concert series of Mozart's requiem. paul Dyer had been waiting his whole career to conduct his own interpretation of this work and it was unforgettable for audiences and musicians alike. Mozart wrote yet another masterpiece – a work that sends shivers down the spine and brings tears to the eyes. a glorious piece, similar to the requiem: his Mass in c minor, known as The Great. With a double voice choir, four vocal soloists and a huge orchestra, it is sparkling and dramatic with thrilling moments throughout. to open the concert, paul has programmed a pasticcio of small Mozart pieces. close your eyes and listen to an innocent lullaby, a cheeky canon, a duet for horns and two of the most breathtaking pieces Mozart ever wrote – the adagio from his Gran Partita and one of his last works, the Ave verum corpus motet for choir and organ.

With a nod to Mozart at his most cheeky, Britten’s Simple Symphony is as boisterous, playful, sentimental and frolicsome as its movement titles suggest. Mozart’s Paris Symphony on the other hand is anything but simple. it’s full of scintillating effects designed to show off a virtuoso orchestra and dazzle the picky parisian audience. From the same trip to paris, the Sinfonia concertante really is ‘mostly Mozart’ – debate rages about how much of it is actually by him. Mozart’s fingerprints are all over the solo wind parts at least, where four friends engage in witty and tuneful conversation.

nick Tsiavos takes the listener on a wild ride, oscillating between a visceral brutalism and restless stillness through to a terrible beauty. Some may call it Fauvist Minimalism, some may call it sacred music that strayed from the path. explore a sound world where the rich, sepulchral beauty of Byzantium collides with the anarchic energies of Modernism; its residue an intimate study of frayed memory and the loneliness of the psyche.

Some may call it Fauvist Minimalism, some may call it sacred music that strayed from the path. explore a sound world where the rich, sepulchral beauty of Byzantium collides with the anarchic energies of Modernism; its residue an intimate study of frayed memory and the loneliness of the psyche.

performing music that is both friendly and deep, three-time aria award-winning jazz pianist Andrea Keller returns for a solo concert featuring work from her new album Family Portraits. Described as a daring and fascinating composer, andrea produces work that surprises with its blend of traditional lyricism and improvisation. Family Portraits is a series of piano pieces composed by Keller in dedication to her ancestors and loved ones, an aural family tree created from a desire to preserve the little that is known for her future generations. the pieces capture the love, humour and sadness of a small and geographically disparate family. Since the release of her first album in 2000, andrea Keller has established herself as an important contributor to australian jazz and contemporary music. Described as having ‘one of australia's most consistently interesting musical minds’ (Doug Spencer 2007), she has been the recipient of three aria awards, three australian Jazz 'Bell' awards, an art Music award and two major fellowships. recorded in the Salon in 2012, this concert marks the release of Family Portraits on the tall poppies label.

the weightless song of the first violin has put a stamp on Joseph Haydn's quartet Op.64 no.5, nicknamed the Lark. Just as the lark's song heralds the european spring, this quartet evokes the season's fragrant freshness. a string quartet is often considered the reflection of a composer's innermost beliefs, and Béla Bartók's third quartet, composed in 1926, is the credo of a very bold artist. intense and untamed, the one-movement work dives headlong into mysterious depths, with its folk influences, percussive gestures and wild glissandi. cellist timo-Veikko Valve joins the Australian String Quartet for Schubert's String Quintet. the 31-year-old Schubert produced an astonishing amount of music in the last year of his life. among the finest was the quintet for strings in c major with its innovative use of two cellos playing a succession of duos. High-spirited and defiant, with a heartbreaking slow movement, it is an extraordinary landmark work. it is as if the compositional mould was irreparably broken when Schubert died, with few composers attempting quintets with a second cello since.

QuArTeTDo not miss this oppurtunity to celebrate the final performances of a landmark ensemble of our time.

after more than 40 years, the undisputed grand masters of the string quartet, Tokyo String Quartet, now bid a graceful farewell to the concert platform. their last programs ever for australia include some of the pieces which cemented their stellar reputation, in performances which will touch all hearts. playing a famous collection of Stradivarius instruments, the tokyo String Quartet offers

a polished beauty of sound matched by none, and a special insight into music which only comes through years of hard-won experience. it will be a highly charged, emotional tour for the members of this ensemble. ‘We would like to finish our careers by playing the pieces we love most,’ says Kikuei ikeda; so the music includes Schubert’s last, great quartet and a masterpiece of late Beethoven. a Sculthorpe quartet recalls the immediate and striking response it received from australian audiences when the tokyo String Quartet first played it. and there is Bartók’s ultimate work in this genre – ‘the way he expressed himself through music is universal, that’s why his music has such power,’ adds Kazuhide isomura.

this program's title is Domenico Scarlatti's description of his own compositional process, but it refers equally well to the performance of Baroque music, especially in the hands of italian virtuoso Davide Monti. Davide returns with Jacqueline Ogeil in a program of italian and German masterworks. corelli takes pride of place on the tercentenary of his death, with both a sonata for violin and continuo and an early 19th-century keyboard transcription of one of the concerti grossi. a rarely played sonata for violin and continuo by Domenico Scarlatti completes the italian segment. Germany is represented by the great Biber passacaglia for solo violin and the last of Bach's six sonatas for harpsichord with violin obbligato.

the dynamic music of the Southern italian peninsula in the 16th century was the result of a rich multicultural society with a deep and complex history. la Compañia captures the sound of this time with enchanting folk melodies and ancient rhythms in a program spiced with melodic improvisations. essential to life, songs and dances, this is fascinating and beautiful music.
