Dear Friends,
We celebrate with you our fifth edition of Spring of Culture; an event that has developed itself through the past five years to be a vision for culture and art in the kingdom.
Diana Krall will be the highlight of the Arad events in her first performance in the Gulf bringing the best of Jazz to Bahrain. Balé de Rua takes Arad by storm in two unforgettable nights where the 16 amazing dancers and singer create a blaze of percussion and songs. Also, not to be missed is the funky interpretation of Mozart’s Magic Flute by Italy’s most culturally diverse group, Orchestra Di Piazza Vittorio and closing with the voice of the “Artist of Arabs” Mohammed Abdo. The Culture Hall and Shaikh Ebrahim Center bring Tarab and Arabic music to the top of the agenda with voices like Dorsaf Hamdani from Tunisia, the Trio Tomb from Lebanon and musician Omar Bashir from Iraq.

Performance arts will also be staged at the Culture Hall with the China Disabled People’s Performing Art Troupe and Samaia’s Georgian Legend dance spectacular. Visual arts and design have a strong contemporary presence through renowned artists like Zaha Hadid and Faisal Samra in addition to unique projects by curator November Paynter and Waheeda Malullah. Our young fans have a date with Afro Moses in an afternoon of Afro Beats at Arad in addition to exciting shows like Animalia, Jungle Book and Galumpha.
This year, we are proud to introduce the Talent Programme which is just a modest beginning of our promise to encourage and develop local talent. Look out for our Talent Champions performing and exhibiting next to international artists in the festival. Our Education Programme continues with an even stronger agenda through dedicated workshops and close encounters with the groups. So check the details in this calendar and on our website in order to register in time for these free experiences.
Finally, our Community Programme grows this year to more performances at centres for special needs children, and inviting other societies that provide care for children to enjoy our events.
Spring of Culture 2010 is more than just a festival.

the world isn’t flat – so why should a canvas be? rashid al khalifa explores this concept in his upcoming exhibition ‘convex: a new perspective’. Over 50 works showcase the artist’s experimentation with a convex canvas, stretched ever so slightly to defy the traditionally flat surface and offering a richer, more tangible perspective. evolving from forty years of trial and error, the artist’s curved canvas seemingly moves closer toward the viewer, and initiates a conversation.

This year, Spring of Culture Festival has launched a Talent Programme that focuses on the areas of Music, Song, Theatre and Visual Arts (Painting, Installation art and Sculpture). The programme invited talented young Bahrainis between the ages of 12 and 26 to apply and get a chance to be included in a unique international learning experience. Expert committees chose the top individuals in each area based on predetermined selection criteria and a clear process, which also included interviews. Those selected were entitled to enroll in specialised workshops conducted during February by international specialists in each area of talent. In addition, during the Spring of Culture Festival 2010, the shortlisted candidates in each area will perform and exhibit next to the international participating groups and artists of Spring of Culture. So look out for these young talents in our programme and applaud their efforts.
If you are talented and missed the chance to apply this year, start preparing yourself for next year’s Talent Programme which will be bigger and better. For more information on the programme and the successful candidates for the year 2010,log on to www.springofculture.org/talent.

CommUNITY
Continuing our pledge of last year to be a socially responsible festival, we have agreed with some of our visiting groups to perform free events for special child welfare societies.
This year we have the pleasure to invite some of the children of Al Sanabil Orphans Care Society to enjoy an afternoon with our well known and most entertaining “Children’s Cheering Carpet” show. Al Sanabil Orphans Care Society has more than 400 orphans registered to whom it provides special services according to their needs and ensures that they are integrated into the society.
Our sense awakening African performance by “Afro Moses” is going to perform a show at the National Bank of Bahrain Home for the Disabled, which is a school that provides special education for children with Down’s syndrome, Autism and learning difficulties.
In addition, our “Shadow Puppeteer” Hobey Ford will welcome the children of the Hope Institute for Special Education to his mysterious world of puppets. The Hope Institute for Special Education also provides a wide variety of special services ranging from Olympic Games to a specific education system tailored to the children’s learning disabilities.
Last but not least, we continue to be nature friendly by printing on environmentally friendly paper and producing a smaller number of promotional materials.
The entire Spring of Culture Programme is available on www.springofculture.org.
