EVENT BIDDING: BRINGING THE BEST TO YOUR CITY

EUROPEAN ATHLETICS ON TRACK
WITH EVENT BIDDING STRATEGY
Event Bidding is the first stage in realising the ambition of bringing one of European
Athletics’ events to a city in any of the 51 Member Federation countries.
It is a process of communication and cooperation between European Athletics and the
relevant Member Federation and the city/cities interested.
To summarise the process, European Athletics asks its Member Federations to submit an
annual questionnaire where they summarise the interest they have from their cities in any
of European Athletics’ events, both sporting and non-sporting, over a number of years.
There are then a series of deadlines (each event varies) to formally confirm the
candidatures and submit the bidding documents. The evaluation is next where European
Athletics gives the chance for each interested city to explain their bid before presenting
the final documents and making presentations to the European Athletics Council who
decide on the venues.
European Athletics currently has an event programme of 16 sporting events and 3 non-
sporting events that Member Federations can bid for. Besides the European Athletics
Championships and European Athletics Indoor Championships, it includes the four
leagues of the European Athletics Team Championships, SPAR European Cross Country
Championships, European Athletics U23, U20 and U18 Championships, three leagues of
the European Combined Events Team Championships, European Throwing Cup,
European 10,000m Cup, European Race Walking Cup, European Mountain Running
Championships, five European Champion Clubs Cups, Convention, Congress and CEO
Conference.
For more information on the bidding process, please contact the European Athletics
Office at [email protected].

EUROPEAN ATHLETICS EVENTS
European Athletics Championships
The flagship event of European Athletics is organised every two years. The championships
run over five or six days with over 1,500 athletes from 50 Member Federation countries. The
first European Athletics Championships was held in Turin, Italy, in 1934. The championships
have a more compact five-day format when they are held in an Olympic year, no race
walking events are organised and half marathon replace the marathon events.
European Athletics Indoor Championships
The biennial championships are the biggest indoor event organised by European
Athletics. More than the 600 athletes from the 50 European Athletics Member Federations
countries participate in the three-day event.
European Athletics Team Championships
The European Athletics Team Championships are a revolutionary concept that pits joint
men's and women's teams against the best on the continent. The top level consists of the
12 best teams in Europe and is named the European Athletics Team Championships Super
League. The 1st League consists of the next 12 teams in Europe, the 2nd League the next
12 teams and the 3rd League consists of all the remaining teams. The exciting format of
these championships puts more emphasis on the country and team as opposed to
individual athletes. The European Athletics Team Championships are not organised in the
years when the European Athletics Championships are held.
SPAR European Cross Country Championships
The most important cross country event on the European calendar attracts the best cross
country talents from across the continent in U20, under-23 and senior men and women
categories. The first edition of the championships was held in Antrim, Great Britain, in 1994.

European Athletics U23 Championships
The European Athletics U23 Championships is a biennial outdoor athletics competition for
European athletes in the age group 20-23.
European Athletics U20 Championships
The European Athletics U20 Championships is a biennial outdoor athletics competition for
European athletes under the age of 20.
European Athletics U18 Championships
The European Athletics U18 Championships is a biennial outdoor athletics competition for
European athletes under the age of 18.
European Combined Events Team Championships
The European Combined Events Team Championships is a track and field competition for
European combined events specialists, with contests in men's decathlon and women's
heptathlon. It is an international team event, where the points of each nation's top three
performers are tallied to form an overall team score. The joint scores of men and women
are used to determine the final teams’ rankings. The European Combined Events Team
Championships takes place in three separate divisions – the Super, First, and Second
Leagues – and nations gain promotion and relegation between the leagues depending
upon their performance. The three-league contest takes place over the same two-day
period held at different European locations. The European Combined Events Team
Championships are not organised in the years when the European Athletics
Championships are held.
European Race Walking Cup
An event dedicated to race walking organised on a biennial basis. The two-day event,
established in 1996, includes a 50km and 20km walk for senior men and a 20km race for
senior women. 10km races for men and women are organised in the U20 category. The
team scores are calculated by aggregating the positions of the first three finishers (senior)
or two finishers (U20). The team with the lowest aggregate of points will be judged the
winner.
European Throwing Cup
The event marks the beginning of the outdoor season for European throwers. Throwing
events such as discus, javelin, hammer and shot put have traditionally been European
strongholds and this annual event gives an early indication of what to expect in the year.

The points earned by athletes are accumulated to determine the final ranking of
participant teams.
European Mountain Running Championships
The European Mountain Running Championships is an annual international mountain
running race. Inaugurated in 2002, the championships were a seniors-only event until 2009.
The competition now features separate senior and junior (U20) races for both men and
women. Medals are awarded on an individual and national team basis. For the team
competition, the finishing positions of each country's top three runners are combined, and
the team with the smallest cumulative total wins the medals.
European 10,000m Cup
An annual day-long event aimed at improving the level of middle and long-distance
running on the continent. Started in 1997, the event has witnessed memorable
performances from the likes of Paula Radcliffe, Fernanda Ribeiro, Paulo Guerra and Mo
Farah among others.
European Champions Club Cups
The European Champion Clubs Cup is an annual athletics competition between the
European athletics clubs that are the reigning champions at national level. The track and
field event is organised for seniors and juniors (U20) in groups. The groups are based on
promotion and relegation methods. A separate senior and junior (U20) cross country
event for clubs is organised on the first weekend of February.
