My Darlin’ New Orleans

Last year, at the inaugural My Darlin’ New Orleans fundraiser, we wroteto you with a certain defensiveness, worried as we were that Treme mightnot find favor with New Orleanians, who are so exacting when it comes todepictions of their city and culture. This year, as we prepare the broadcastof season two of Treme, we are a bit more confident about what we aredoing and why.

New Orleans matters. More than that, New Orleans and its insistenceon remaining New Orleans speaks to the American pysche in ways thatmore and more people are beginning to understand. Indeed, to imagine anAmerica without this special city -- as some, in fact, presumed to do fiveyears ago -- is little less than an epic failure of imagination and, indeed, aninability to understand that which gives the American experiment real depthand meaning.

At the cultural and emotional core of this city is its musical community --a generations-old creative dynamo that fuels the very soul of the place. It'sremarkable that the perpetuity of the New Orleans music machine -- fromtrad to modern jazz, from R&B to rock to funk, rap and bounce – everseemed threatened by Katrina, when, in retrospect, so much of it returnedwith rapidity and vigor. Indeed, it's the culture -- more than political leader-ship or economic imperatives -- that seems to have demanded the return ofNew Orleans. This is all the more astonishing given how little support themusical community sometimes receives.

The people who make New Orleans what it is are -- to a great extent --living the musical life as a workaday, gig-to-gig experience. It is in everysense -- with some fortunate exceptions -- a blue-collar workforce, but with-out the traditional union benefits of working-class America. Profit-sharingcomes slowly or not at all. Wages are subject to varying demand in clubsand nightspots. Health care can be sporadic. Job training – once readilyavailable in the aggressive music education provided by school marchingbands – is now lagging. And pension and retirement benefits? Don't holdyour breath.

New Orleans sounds as she does because its musical genius is nur-tured by a talented class of folk who are themselves often poorly nurtured bythe community they serve. Which is exactly why we are here tonight onbehalf of two local charities, the New Orleans Musicians Assistance Founda-tion, which received our support last year, and The Roots of Music Program, which is trying to fill a void in music education that resulted from Katrina.

NOMAF, which evolved from the New Orleans Musicians' Clinic, is fight-ing to continue its legacy of service following cutbacks in federalgrants. While some of that funding has now been restored, NOMAF is strug-gling to maintain its reach within the musical community, and the need forhealth care has never been greater.

Similarly, this year's fundraiser is also serving The Roots of Music. Bysponsoring a continuing afterschool program that brings over 100 studentsfrom all over New Orleans together for music education, ROM takes up thegauntlet of music education at a time when such programs have beenscaled back or dropped in many city schools. And in New Orleans, wheregenerations have taken pride in their middle school and high school bands, the marching bands have always provided the talent that fuels the musicaltradition.

So bid aggressively on the auction items. Spend freely on those itemsthat you truly value – because there is much offered tonight that has genuinevalue. And then, beyond that spend freely on that which might not, in an-other setting, be quite so prized. As with Mardi Gras – fight hard to winsome stuff that you might not treasure the same way on Ash Wednesday. For New Orleanians, this all comes naturally when the moment is right.

Our thanks to this year’s sponsors – Cinelease, Hollywood Trucks,Panavision New Orleans, Exchange Communications, Deluxe and HBO, allof whom have combined to fund this event. And our further thanks to thegreat lineup of New Orleans musicians performing for us, to the cast whoare attending or who have sponsored gift boxes for auction, and to the vol-unteers among our crew who are manning the event.

Thank you and have a wonderful evening.

The New Orleans Musicians Assistance Foundation’s(NOMAF) mission is simple: to sustain New Orleans’performance artists, musicians and tradition bearersin mind, body and spirit. What our thirteen years ofresearch indicates is that while the segment of NewOrleans’ artistic community we serve may beesteemed the world over, at home they often existunder the radar in a cash-based economy, excludedfrom the fabric of social systems. The result is thatmore than eighty percent of the 2000 plus performingartists and tradition bearers our clinic and assistancefoundation serves live on a household income of lessthan $15,000 a year, which is below the federalpoverty guidelines.

NOMAF evolved from the New Orleans MusiciansClinic (NOMC) in response to the post HurricaneKatrina displacement of our musicians and MardiGras Indians. Founded in 1998, the NOMC is a uniquecomprehensive and occupational health clinicestablished in the wake of the untimely deaths ofmany of New Orleans’ music legends includingJohnny Adams, Professor Longhair, James Bookerand even Louis Armstrong, whose early years ofuntreated disease compromised his health. Today, theNOMC remains an innovative collaboration of localhealth care providers who strive to ensure the longev-ity of New Orleans’ performing artists.

After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, NOMAF redefinedwellness as not only “preventing death by lifestyle,”but as “keeping music alive,” by assisting ourperforming artists in rebuilding their careers and theirculture through underwriting performance fees formusicians and tradition bearers via strugglingnon-profits. Since 2005 NOMAF has funded morethan $2 million for 5500 live performances to morethan 150 non-profits, including ASHE Cultural ArtsCenter, the Arts Council, Roots of Music, BackbeatFoundation and Youth Aspirations/Young Artists.Through our NOMAF Emergency Fund we provideburial expenses and brass bands to honor the legacy ofour cultural icons.

The Roots of Music"Saving the youth of New Orleans through Music

and Mentorship."

The Roots of Music was founded in 2007 by RebirthBrass Band Drummer Derrick Tabb and AllisonReinhardt to fill the void in New Orleans middle schoolmusic education programs, which were lost postKatrina.

The marching band in New Orleans has a historythat dates back to the late 1800’s and anyone that hasbeen to a Mardi Gras parade in their lifetime couldnever imagine a parade that was not driven by theenergy of the marching bands and the kids in them.

In a city where the streets are not forgiving it isvital to the preservation of our heritage and our hometo provide this program that, not only teaches a childto read and write music, play an instrument, be part ofa band, it provides a place where kids can cometogether from all neighborhoods and be one voice in athunderous roar of perseverance and resilience.

The year-round program is tuition free and trulyfortunate to have the support of Mayor Landrieu whomade it possible for the program to be housed in theLouisiana State Museum’s Cabildo.

Each day, busses transport the students, numbering more than 100, to the heart of the citywhere they start by taking care of business in the wayof completing homework with the help of volunteertutors from Tulane, Xavier and Delgado. The studentsmust accomplish and maintain a 2.5 GPA in order tokeep a seat in the band, which began parading inMardi Gras of 2009.

The tutoring session is followed by band practicewhere each section works hands-on with instructorsthat represent some of the city’s most talentedmusicians and band directors. After practice each childis served a warm meal and then transported safely totheir home.

Currently, The Roots of Music has a waiting listexceeding five hundred children.
