Even the Dog for Heavenrsquos Sake
APOSTLE The
T he world in which we exist is angry and vituperative Maybe it has always been that
way But to me it just seems worse Nations threaten one another posturing for power Fear evidently makes us distrust almost everyone
In our own nation we remain in the ditch of racism As we came into being as a country we allowed slavery to remain and we continue to be oppressed by the oppression of an entire race of people And that is not the only arena in which fear incites such inappropriate anger and violent behavior
And it is true even for the dog ndash my dog
I take Drake for a walk every day It is good for both of us Except given how much he wants to attack and take down any other dog he sees it is also stressful I am constantly watching looking about for any other dogs so I either can change directions mdash-which is an avoidance tactic or grip his leash even tighter mdash which is an anti-lunging tactic
The other day as I maneuvered around yet another dog I thought about the world we live in and it occurred to me mdash oi vey even the dog is a mess Because the truth is that Drake is always on the look out for another dog to mess with Intentionally he is actively seeking an encounter to take down another one of his own kind
It is exhausting Thankfully we are in a retraining mode I now have some tactics to help him understand that other dogs do not require his aggression Especially when he doesnrsquot even know them It is beginning to work It will take time to retrain his instincts and desire I am a patient person but he is learning that I will not tolerate this kind of behavior
And just to be clear since misery loves company mdash he wants me to tell you that I will not tolerate it at church either mdash from anyone dog or human Nor should any one of us
I read a comic strip the other day called Pearls before Swine Pig was writing a note It said
Dear everyone
Do not be mean
But especially donrsquot be mean to people who are powerless to stop you
Thatrsquos just cruel
So at St Brsquos we will not be cruel It will be one place in this angry and vituperative world where we will love respect and care for one another It will be one place where we will assume that people are good and should be respected because we have (each and every one of us) been created in the image of God and therefore have stunning value It will be one place where God will prevail mercy will be abundant and we will relax trust and enjoy one another Because that is how God will have it mdash for heavenrsquos sake
(Continued on page 2)
And if Drake can learn how to behave better so can we And if we can then the world will have at least one place where Godrsquos Kingdom might just show up on occasion and we do not have to avoid others or have to tighten our grip to be in control Instead Godrsquos grace can control us To do so is certainly for Heavenrsquos sake
And then we can walk out the front door into the world with joy and delight leaving behind our instinct for aggression And in so doing we will be the presence that God desires us to be strong because we
(Continued from page 1)
are empowered to love clear because we know what God requires of us compassionate because we know how much God loves all she has created in herhis image and gracious because we are not afraid to show that love to a world in desperate need of it All for the sake of heaven
Now that will be a glorious walk

discussed what it means
to be made new in the
waters of Baptism and the significance of the
beginning of the Advent season and the approaching
new calendar year They have enjoyed doing crafts
and playing games which have helped them to
practice patience and persistence in creative ways as

Angel Tree Gifts and a Meal for 40 West Families
so many times the ldquoBless Yourdquo or ldquoThank Godrdquo was said with a catch in their voice I felt such joy in being one of those who called the family to tell them to come on that special Tuesday We never know if the gift will be from ldquoSantardquo or Mom or Dad or Grandparents but what we do know is that each child will have a gift to unwrap and each family will have a good meal to share and each parent or guardian will know that they have been blessed by Godrsquos children mdash all of you mdash sharing your love for one another
With full and grateful hearts on behalf of our Staff
Volunteers and Clients we Thank You

MLK Day of Service Join us on Monday January 21st to honor Dr Kingrsquos Legacy
by Charles Flexner and Glorius Sullivan
I n appreciation for the life of service exemplified by Dr Martin
Luther King Jr more and more people have decided to make MLK Day a day ON rather than a day off a day dedicated to serving their communities
In this spirit St Brsquos parishioners have participated in service projects on MLK Day for the past several years and we will do so again this year As we have done for the past 7 years we will be sponsoring a Food Drive for the 40 West Assistance and Referral Center at St Brsquos
The cold weather months are always very busy for 40 West helping our neighbors by providing food funds for energy assistance (BGE turn-off notices) eviction prevention and help for prescription drug and pharmacy costs Food from the pantry is available to all their clients and by January the shelves are in need of replenishing to continue to provide for those in need
We are inviting you and our neighbors in Hunting Ridge Ten Hills Westgate and other nearby communities and churches to help by donating non-perishable food items such as peanut butter tuna fruit macaroni and cheese chili beef stew vegetables cereal instant oatmeal maple syrup and other canned jars or boxed food To invite our neighbors list serve messages are being sent out The flyer for the Food Drive will also be available in the Tower Room and will be distributed in the community beginning this month Our neighbors will be asked to leave non-perishable food donations on their porch or steps on MLK Day January 21 and to flag it with the MLK Day Flyer Brown bags will be delivered in the neighborhoods after the 1030 AM church service on January 13th and can also be picked up in the Tower Room if needed Donations
should be set out by 1000 am on January 21st and will be collected between the hours of 1000 am and 100 pm by volunteers from St Brsquos
The Outreach Committee is asking for help from both adults and youth We need volunteers to help us deliver bags to the front porches of houses in our local neighborhoods after the 1030 am church service on January 13th Then on MLK Day January 21st we need adults to drive vehicles and older children (ages 9 and up) and youth to collect the items from porches to bring to the vehicles for delivery back to 40 West 40 West staff and volunteers will receive the donated items at the 40 West Office at the Church to organize and store
The hours of service for the Food Drive are from 1000 am to 100 pm Volunteers please meet at 40 West at 930 am Let us know how you can help by signing up in the Parish House You may also contact the Outreach Committee Contacts (listed below) by phone or e-mail subject line ndash MLK Day Food Collection In case of inclement weather (significant snow or ice) the pick-up will not take place although food can still be brought by individuals directly to 40 West during office hours (Monday Wednesday and Friday from 1000 am to 100 pm)

by Charles Flexner and Glorius Sullivan
I n appreciation for the life of service exemplified by Dr Martin

An Update on the Childrenrsquos Word Classes
and having really fruitful conversations about what
Scripture reveals to us By grounding the stories in
their historical context they are becoming more
empathetic and informed readers
Moving forward it turns out that often in our lives
God has different plans than we envision and in that
context I am sad to inform you that Miss Keighlee
will be leaving the Childrenrsquos Word program
sometime early in the new year She emphasizes that
she has really enjoyed teaching her Kangaroos and
being a part of our worship community but for
several reasons will not be able to continue much
longer We are extremely grateful for the time we
have had with Miss Keighlee and wish her the very
best as she finishes her Masters work in Theological
Studies at Loyola University in Baltimore
The Christian Education Task Force has begun the
process of finding a new Elephant leader and the
Childrenrsquos Word program will continue uninterrupted
as we enter the new year Please let us know if you are
interested in becoming a parent volunteer (whether
or not you are a parent) to help in the classroomsmdashit
is a fun and rewarding experience and wersquod love to
involve more of you And as always ALL children
ages 3-11 are welcome and encouraged to join the
program at any time

D ecember is here and our new Childrenrsquos Word
program continues to go well though an
important transition will occur in January as will be
described later in this update Kangaroo and Elephant
leaders Miss Ebony and Miss Keighlee along with
their parent volunteers have been busy preparing
their charges for Advent
Miss Ebony reports that
her Kangaroos have had
fun this month making
Advent wreaths and
preparing for the
Christmas Pageant in
addition to learning Godrsquos
Word
Miss Keighlee reports that
the past few weeks have
offered the Elephants
many opportunities for
growth and renewal With
the dawn of a new
liturgical year they have
discussed what it means
to be made new in the
waters of Baptism and the significance of the
beginning of the Advent season and the approaching
new calendar year They have enjoyed doing crafts
and playing games which have helped them to
practice patience and persistence in creative ways as
well as diving even deeper into the weekly readings

A t our Classics Christmas gathering on Wednesday December 12 we enjoyed coming together for fellowship good food and snacks singing Advent and Christmas hymns and a first-ever White Elephant
Gift Exchange There was another quieter event that happened that day that I am most appreciative for -- the generous donations that individual members of the Classics gave to the 40 West Assistance and Referral Center Amid the busyness of the season - gift shopping sending cards house decorating family and friends visiting baking ndash amid all of these things members kept in mind and opened their hearts to those less fortunate This gift totaled $70500 a generous sum to help enable us to continue to help those in need in our community On behalf of the Board of Directors Staff and Volunteers at the Center we want you to know that we are very grateful for your continued financial support and your prayers

An Update on the Childrenrsquos Word Classes
and having really fruitful conversations about what
Scripture reveals to us By grounding the stories in
their historical context they are becoming more
empathetic and informed readers
Moving forward it turns out that often in our lives
God has different plans than we envision and in that
context I am sad to inform you that Miss Keighlee
will be leaving the Childrenrsquos Word program
sometime early in the new year She emphasizes that
she has really enjoyed teaching her Kangaroos and
being a part of our worship community but for
several reasons will not be able to continue much
longer We are extremely grateful for the time we
have had with Miss Keighlee and wish her the very
best as she finishes her Masters work in Theological
Studies at Loyola University in Baltimore
The Christian Education Task Force has begun the
process of finding a new Elephant leader and the
Childrenrsquos Word program will continue uninterrupted
as we enter the new year Please let us know if you are
interested in becoming a parent volunteer (whether
or not you are a parent) to help in the classroomsmdashit
is a fun and rewarding experience and wersquod love to
involve more of you And as always ALL children
ages 3-11 are welcome and encouraged to join the
program at any time

D ecember is here and our new Childrenrsquos Word
program continues to go well though an
important transition will occur in January as will be
described later in this update Kangaroo and Elephant
leaders Miss Ebony and Miss Keighlee along with
their parent volunteers have been busy preparing
their charges for Advent
Miss Ebony reports that
her Kangaroos have had
fun this month making
Advent wreaths and
preparing for the
Christmas Pageant in
addition to learning Godrsquos
Word
Miss Keighlee reports that
the past few weeks have
offered the Elephants
many opportunities for
growth and renewal With
the dawn of a new
liturgical year they have
discussed what it means
to be made new in the
waters of Baptism and the significance of the
beginning of the Advent season and the approaching
new calendar year They have enjoyed doing crafts
and playing games which have helped them to
practice patience and persistence in creative ways as
well as diving even deeper into the weekly readings

Tuesday December 18 was a wonderful day for many families at 40 West Thatrsquos the day all those precious gifts so many of you gave so carefully chosen and brightly wrapped and placed under the Angel Tree were given to parents and guardians to make this Christmas a happier time for all the family
St Brsquos parishioners and those of Hunting Ridge Presbyterian Church The New Hope Christian Baptist Church and St Agnes Catholic Church and many neighbors and friends have all joined together in providing at least 131 children new toys and gifts this Christmas In addition the 50 families of these 131 children received a turkey and a box of food provided by 40 West Assistance and Referral Center Inc
Our clients are so grateful for your generosity When told they would be receiving gifts for their children or the grandchildren or other children they are raising
Good Work Continues at 40 West
Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets enabled families to enjoy holiday meals together and more than 100 children found gifts under their trees
Your donations of food time clothing gifts and dollars have enabled 40 West to do more

assisted a record number of our neighbors We thank you for your efforts for all of our 40 West clients and families
