Life Lessons Program (LLP): making an Impact

Prior to travelling during the Spring Break, make sure to close all

windows, lock all doors, and close all lights, appliances, etc. It’s for

your safety, and taking better care of your home !

Don’t let the bed bugs bite! Bed bugs are visible brownish insects. Measuring 4mm long, they are nocturnal and can be seen usu-ally, along the seams of mattresses. Their only food is blood, so if you see them or have some bites, don’t panic, they are not life threatening. They are a nui-sance but they don’t spread disease. However, like mosquito bites, the bites of bed bugs can cause red-ness, swelling and itchy bumps. Sometimes these bites occur in groups of 3 in a line. Another important fact to consider: cleanliness is not associated

with bedbugs; no one will judge you. 5 Stars hotels as well as hostels have re-ported cases of infestation.

How They Spread Bedbugs are usually brought into your home in suitcases and handbags. They also spread on clothing, however they don’t fly and they don’t jump. Soon, many of you will be traveling over the holidays and the read-ing week periods. You need to keep in mind the risk of picking up bed bugs in your travels.

What to do? Avoid moving into a friend’s room!

Try to catch one in a sealed container or plastic bag as see-ing a specimen will help us identify them.

Leave your bed as is, do not remove the sheets.

Report your suspicion to our staff: floor fellows, front desks info clerk, building directors or porters, etc. They will contact the building supervisor/manager and an inspection of your room will be performed. Make yourself available, we will explain our protocol and the procedures to follow.

Even if you don’t have bed bugs … let’s talk prevention:

Don’t pick up used mattresses, second-hand upholstered furniture, backpacks or suitcases on the side of the road. They might have been thrown there because they are infested with bugs. Avoid bringing home items found outside or in the garbage as well.

Be careful with used clothing and furniture.

Clean and inspect them carefully before bringing them into your room/apartment.

Vacuum your place regularly.

Avoid clutter and clothes on the floor: much less places for them to crawl into and hide!

Know that a washing machine cycle, using the hottest water setting as well as a full cycle in the dryer will effectively get rid of them on your clothes and linen.

Tips and what to do when you travel: 1. When returning from travelling, during the winter months in

Montreal, leave luggage outside overnight @ -32oC for a mini-mum of 15 minutes .

2. If not an option, wash all your clothing upon returning in hot water (as 7 minutes in 46oC can kill the bugs/larvae ), hot dry-and store your bag / luggage in a plastic bag before storing.

3. Often bags can be placed in the dryer for a cycle on high heat prior to storing all wrapped in plastic.

Do NOT

bring inside

used mat-

tresses, or

discarded

furniture.

People threw

it out for a

reason and it

could be bed

bugs!
