From Pulitizer Prize-winning Photojournalist To Pioneering DSLR Filmmaker
The Incredible
Digital Journey Of
Vincent Laforet
Vincent Laforet is widely credited with launching the HD DSLR
filmmaking movement. In 2009, he shot Reverie with the Canon EOS
5D Mark II. It was the first widely seen short film to be shot on a
DSLR. The film created an immediate sensation in the U.S. and was
viewed more than two million times in the first week of its release.
Vincent subsequently shot Nocturne, an even more ambitious work,
on the Canon EOS 1D Mark IV. For his most recent film, the much-
anticipated Möbius, he chose the Cinema EOS C300.

Vincent Laforet Introduces The Cinema EOS System To Southeast AsiaThe Cinema EOS Southeast Asia Tour
kicked off in Singapore on 7 January, with
Pulitizer Prize-winning photographer Vincent
Laforet introducing the Cinema EOS system
and its theme, “Leave No Story Untold.”
Laforet shared his experiences with this
revolutionary innovation and showed clips
from his latest film, “Möbius.”
“Being an influential photographer and now
an accomplished film director, Vincent is
the perfect spokesperson for the Cinema
EOS system,” stated Andrew Koh, Senior
Director and General Manager of Canon
Consumer Imaging & Information Products
Group. “As a creative professional, he will
show how he engages the Cinema EOS
system in the creation of mainstream motion
pictures.”
The Cinema EOS Southeast Asia Tour also
covers Indonesia and Thailand, after which
it will travel to India.
As a young still photographer, you shot on film. How was the transition from shooting on film to shooting digitally?
It was a fairly natural transition. I worked with
Photoshop from a very young age and was
accustomed to the digital era relatively early. I
came to really dislike having to process film in
darkrooms on deadline, which I did for years
with the C-41 darkroom chemical process. This
can be very stressful and time consuming. I was
happy to spend more of my time out shooting
than in the lab – and digital brought me that.
Do you still shoot on film?
No – it’s far too time consuming. I like to be
able to see exactly what I am shooting now –
either in still or in film. It allows me to confirm
that I have or have not captured the moment
and to perfect my composition and lighting as
I go.
What prompted you to make the shift from still photography to filmmaking?
I had always wanted to make the transition.
When the Canon EOS 5D Mark II came out – it
seemed like the perfect opportunity to do so.
What was the reaction of your peers when you told them you were shooting a movie
Are the lenses important to creating a “filmic” look when shooting movies on a DSLR?
Very much so. Although the size of the sensor
is a key factor, using lenses with wide apertures
makes you lose depth of field, and therefore the
look is more “filmic.”
How would you describe the lens choice offered by Canon?
I’ve found their two zooms to be on par with
most, if not all cinema zooms out there today.
I’m very excited to get a chance to use the new
Cinema EOS line as it grows.
What are the primary advantages of shooting movies on a DSLR as opposed to shooting on film or with other types of digital movie cameras?
The size of the sensor, the relatively low cost,
the relatively small size and the great low-light
performance.
Are there similarities between setting up a scene for a still photograph and for setting one up for a movie shoot? What about the differences?
There are more differences than there are
similarities in some way. A photograph is about
freezing one moment in time. A film is about
moving the camera and having the composition
evolve during the movement – always revealing
important information and excluding irrelevant
information. While the composition and lighting
principles are often identical, they are used quite
differently in the end.
Digital technology makes filmmaking far more accessible to those with limited budgets. What advice do you have for aspiring filmmakers?
Stop talking about it – and go out and do it!
That being said, there is one important caveat
– keep in mind that the more time you spend
preparing for your film (pre-production) the
easier your shoot will go. If you just rush out and
do it…you may have a lot of regrets in the end.
The trick is finding a good balance between the
two.
What can we look forward to from Vincent Laforet?
I’m looking to shoot my first long-form narrative
film within the next one to two years. I’m
extremely excited to be moving in that direction.
A film is about moving the camera
and having the composition
evolve during the movement – always revealing important
information and excluding irrelevant
information.
A photograph is about freezing one moment in time.
with the Canon EOS 5D Mark II?
I think most were shocked at the quality of the
video coming from the camera; people reacted
tremendously well to it.
In terms of visual perception, how would you compare the quality of a movie shot on film to one shot on the Cinema EOS system?
I think that the vast majority of people out there
would never be able to tell the difference, to be
honest. There is so much that can be done in
post production today – from grading to adding
different film grain after the fact. Only DPs
(directors of photography) and some directors
can truly appreciate the difference.
How big of an impact is the Cinema EOS system likely to have on professional filmmakers in Hollywood and around the world?
Well, only time will tell on this one. I stay away
from making too many predictions these days. I
do think that the Cinema EOS C300 will become
very popular as people get a chance to get the
camera into their hands.
What’s in the Photographer’s Bag?When Vincent Laforet goes out on a shoot,
you will find these equipment in his bag:
Canon EOS 5D Mark II, EF 24-70mm zoom
lens, EF 70-200mm zoom lens, EF 16-
35mm ultra-wide-angle zoom lens, TS-E
24mm tilt-shift lens, TS-E 45mm tilt-shift
lens, 1.4x converter, 32GB microSDHC
cards, B+W polarizer filter and, when the
assignment calls for it, an EF 500mm f4.0
IS USM lens.
Born in 1975, Vincent Laforet began his
career at 15 and in less than a decade
established himself as the youngest
staff photographer for the New York
Times. His work has appeared in a host
of international publications, including
Vanity Fair, National Geographic, Sports
Illustrated, Time, Newsweek and Life. In
2010 he received a Gold, Silver and Bronze
in the Titanium category at the Cannes
Lions International advertising Festival for
his work as director of the Canon “Beyond
The Still” Competition. Vincent has shot a
number of highly acclaimed short films on
the Canon EOS DSLR, including his most
recent work, “Möbius”, which was shot on
the new Cinema EOS system. In Singapore
as part of the Cinema EOS Southeast Asia
Tour 2012, he spoke with Buzz about his
transition from photojournalism to digital
filmmaking.

INTERVIEW INTERVIEW04 | | 05
The Canon Cinema EOS system, launched in Singapore on 7 January
2012, was designed to revolutionize the movie industry. Built on a 74-year
history of optical innovation, it marks an exciting new imaging expression
for Canon.
The Cinema EOS system features the EOS C300 – available
in both EF and PL mount configurations – which boasts the Super
35mm-equivalent CMOS sensor. It includes seven new 4K-ready EF
Cinema Lenses and is compatible with Canon’s extensive range of
high-performance EF lenses, providing cinematographers with unlimited
creative possibilities.
EOS DSLRs have already made a mark in Tinseltown, with the famed
EOS 5D Mark II used in the production of major motion pictures such as
“Captain America” and popular TV programs like “House”. The Cinema
EOS system, launched in Hollywood in November 2011, is set to create a
paradigm shift.
Andrew Koh, Senior Director and General Manager of Canon
Consumer Imaging & Information Products Group, believes the new
system will make a profound impact on Asian filmmakers. “With the new
Cinema EOS system making its foray into Hollywood,” he explained, “we
believe that filmmakers in Asia will also benefit greatly from our new digital
cinematography system, which is designed specifically for the motion
picture industry.”
The Canon Cinema EOS system brings an entirely new level of
quality and accessibility to filmmaking. Although embraced by Hollywood,
it also puts the power of cinema into the hands of those with modest
budgets, befitting its theme, “Leave No Story Untold.”

A MASTERPIECE IN ANY LIGHT
LEGRIAHF M52/M56
Pure Genius In Digital Imaging
It is an EOS like no other, an ingenious combination of full-frame 35mm 18.1-megapixel CMOS
sensor, Dual DIGIC 5+ imaging processor, high-quality image capture at up to 12fps (14fps in Super
High Speed Mode), next-generation auto-focusing system and advanced HD video capture. But what
does all these mean to you?
If you’re a photographer who insists on unprecedented still photographic quality, it means
superior detail and accuracy with minimal noise even in extremely low-light shooting conditions. A
powerful ISO range of 100 to 51,200 (up to IS0 204,800 in H2 mode) further enhances this capability.
The 61-Point High-Density Reticular AF complements a 100,000-pixel RGB Metering Sensor
using a dedicated DIGIC 4 Imaging Processor. This creates unprecedented levels of focus speed and
accuracy for exceptional tracking capabilities even in the most challenging shooting situations.
The EOS-1D X also offers instant response to match a sports photographer’s reflexes, reducing
the minimum shutter-release lag to 36 milliseconds (from 40 milliseconds with the EOS-1D Mark IV).
For filmmakers, editing full HD movies is easier and more accurate with the embedded SMTPE-
compliant time code. Audio level settings can be adjusted manually, and you have the choice of
shooting movies in P, Av, Tv and Manual modes.
Considering the myriad of exceptionally intelligent features and functions – and we’ve really just
scratched the surface here – the EOS-1D X is a pure genius in digital imaging.
Canon EOS-1D X
DSLR-like Performance From A Compact
Its stylish body is a masterpiece of ergonomic efficiency, but there’s nothing compact about its
performance. The PowerShot G1 X is the ideal camera for those who desire DSLR-like quality in a
significantly smaller package.
It boasts a 14.3-megapixel, 1.5-inch CMOS sensor that dramatically reduces noise and offers
exceptional low-light performance. The large sensor provides more control over the depth of field, so
you can create the beautiful blurred backgrounds and foregrounds typically associated with DSLRs.
A DIGIC 5 imaging processor easily handles huge amounts of data, which further enhances low-
light performance and makes it possible to shoot up to ISO 12,800 at full resolution. It also supports
High-Speed Burst HD mode, whereby you can capture 4.5 high-quality shots per second.

Professional photographers and dedicated enthusiasts understand
that a photographic image is not truly complete until it’s printed. They
also know that it has to be perfect.
The PIXMA PRO-1 answers the call for perfection with a 12-colour
Lucia ink system consisting of six colour inks, five monochrome inks
and Chroma Optimizer. It expands the colour gamut in every direction
for accuracy that’s unprecedented outside a professional photo lab.

reduced graininess, resulting in exceptional detail from highlight to
shadow areas. Chroma Optimizer ensures uniform glossiness and
reduces the bronzing effect, so there’s no discoloration in white and
gray areas.

with Colour Management Tool Pro, an advanced software suite
included with the PRO-1. Easy-PhotoPrint Pro, also included, lets you
interface seamlessly with a variety of Adobe photo-editing applications.
