Article introduction
Masthead – a masthead allows the reader to recognise the magazine from purchase or a previous purchase which makes the masthead a critical aspect of any magazine. All magazine are different in the media industry but all publishers are able to create their own individualism through creating their masthead and using it on every magazine that they publish. Through creating a certain masthead, it is used to connect with a certain person with a personality that would be drawn straight to your magazine through first glance.
Main image – this, like the masthead is another crucial point to attract the reader with. The first thing that is seen on the front cover of a magazine is the main image. This attracts the reader’s eye to which they read more on the front cover . With my magazine I did the same as I did with the masthead and kept it simple. I did not want to over complicate the aspects of the front cover which could turn people off from looking.
The Left Third – As it says in it’s title, the left third is usually placed upon the left third of the front cover. On my magazine, I placed all of the information that would usually be placed on the left third, on the right third. Upon my research of many different magazines, the left third made all of these different magazine that were extremely different in many ways, look the same. I wanted my magazine to not look like all of the thousands of magazines published to date. This helps brand identity and individuality as many other covers do no do this.
Contents page – Usually you would think of a contents page as a list of all of the pages throughout the magazine. In my contents, I focused mainly on the main article, main images and the masthead. I only placed a couple of main competitions to attract audiences because upon investigation, readers prefer a magazine with competitions and free items. Like my front cover, I did not want to over complicate and bombard the page with unneeded information.
My magazine represents live music. There is a massive market for live music these days and one of the reasons for this is illegal downloading. Illegal downloading interfers with the money that bands and artists make from records so then the only option to make a decent living is to tour. I do not believe that there are many magazine that offers gigs references around my community and if it was in my power, i would create this type of magazine because i find it highly frustrating constantly having to check the internet for local gigs in my area. Through use of a simple picture for my main image on the front cover, it is easy to connect with the artist Chris Johnson. You feel as if you can connect with him even though he is famous thus attracting more readers. The main images on the double page spread show Chris standing in a ‘I don’t care’ manner which I also tried to portray through the use of trying to blend the photos together with photoshop.
Bauer Media are probably the most likely company to publish my magazine seeing as they publish magazine like Kerrang which could be linked very closely to my magazine.
Bauer Media could possibly publish a magazine like mine because one of their main magazines; Kerrang, represent the same social group as my magazine does. Kerrang does create sections in their magazine for live music but only report on at most 3 gigs that are usually at main arenas in large cities. Gigs Galore would report on small bands that are upcoming to possible fame within the music industry and that are trying to promote their music through live shows.
I collected the information from my survey into a small reader profile. One of the main likes of my audience was the love for live music and festivals. They said that they loved the feeling of being at a festival, being part of the crowd and listening to music in their free time. It is obvious that my target audience are that of the free spirited type of teenager who like to be part of the crowd. Overall my magazine is to aimed at 15+ being the age that most people start going to their first gigs/festivals at.
-I used social networking sites such as Facebook and Tumblr to promote and attract readers to my surveys
- Creating a magazine genre that is not extremely popular
- Offering an artist who readers can connect to through emotional traumas
-Competitions and offers
- maintaining a constant style throughout
-Before I started this media course, I had never used programmes such as Photoshop before. I found it challenging to come to grips with but after time and after much help, I found it very easy to edit my quick in a quick and assertive way.
- Do you research. I would not have been able to create this magazine and genre without asking my fellow students and friends who are collectively the same age as me.
- The first attempt doesn’t have to be the final product. Make and create different versions of your product and experiment with different techniques
