View of the Evaporation Station at dusk with the central Playa area and art installations in the distance. During the evenings the structures will form a strong silhouette outline, defi ning the inner ring of Black Rock City. LED lighting connection to solar photovoltaics could be incorporated to provide a night time presence the the structure.

South-South-Westerly is the prevailing wind over the Black Rock Desert. The evaporation device is alinged on this axis to maximise exposure to the strong desert winds to aid evaporation rates.
R e s i d u e O d o u r s
Unpleasant oddours from the grey water are dispursed onto the playa as a result of the devices alignment to the prevailing wind. This avoids foul smells affecting the camping areas.
E v a p o r a t i o n P o n d
Grey water from the wash basins is drained into the evaporation pond that forms the base of the device. As the wood dries, evaporation of water from the wood surface exerts capillary actions absorbing water from the evaporation pond along the length of the grain.
E v a p o r a t i o n
Grey water is evaporated from the surface of the evaporation device and the evaporation pool. The rate of evaporation for the device is designed to be substanially more effective than existing evaporation ponds due to its exposure to increased air rate fl ow with encourages faster evaporation as a result of boundary layer evaporation on the timbers surface.
S o l a r E x p o s u r e
The device predominantly faces southerly due to the orientation required for the prevailing wind, resulting in the device being exposed to the hot desert sun for much of the daylight hours. This exposure will increases the temperature of the water and timber, resulting in higher kinetic energy in the water molecules leading to an increases rate of evaporation.
W a s h i n g S i n k s
Sink surrounding the perimeter of the device provide an area for campers to perform there washing up. The system incorporates solar pipes for hot water to provide more effi cient washing up and pressuried spray taps to reduce water consumption. A gravel fi lter drains the grey water to the evporation pool where it is then abosrbed and evaporated by the device.

Looking at structures in nature that
adapt to the presence of moisture.
Devolping a structure bases on sensory
and actuating elements to change the
porous state. Areas of inspiration include
pine cones and varietys of fl owers that
adapt to climatic conditions.
Removing of traditional evaporation
ponds identifi ed as one of the most
unpleasant aspects of Burning Man due
to the foul odours produced. Replacing
them with a practical and interactive
device that visually adapts to the
presence and absense of moisture.
Proposal for a series of washing-up
and evaporation devices at Black Rock
City to aid with the evaporation of grey
water and to help aleviate pollution to
the playa surface.

Device in its ‘open’ state, a result of moisture absorbtion of the veneer cells from the base evaporation pond and from the application of water to the surface by disposal of water onto the device by users. This open state increases the device exposure to air fl ow and solar radiation, leading to an increase in the rate of evaporation.

D e v i c e C o n t r a c t i n g
Device in its ‘closed state’, acting as a visual indicator to the camps that the device is dry and able to take on more grey water. In its closed state the latice openings are small and therfore less porous to air-fl ow.

Plan for a structure at one of the locations identifed on the city layout on the previous page. The station if rotated onto the axis of the South-South-West prevailing wind to ensure maxium exposure of the prevailing wind, optimizing evaporation rates. Correctly orientating the device will ensure that un-pleasant oddurs are dispersed onto the wide open playa and not towards the camping areas.

The structure requires hot water to enable effi cient and effective washing to occur, this hot water is achieved through the use of solar pipes that combine as a fence system to prevent users from the odorous and stagnant water of the evaporation pool. The black plastic tubing absorbs the vast solar energy present in the desert, transferring it to the water that passes through the tubing.
Wash basins are formed from recycled water containers and are add-on elements to the fence uprights used to create the solar fence. The spray faucet and pipe attach via an attachment that slips onto the neck of the water container. The output of sprayed water increases water effi ciency and is a common method employed at burning man to reduce water consumption.

Water collectors are dispersed nearby to collect water for the system in the form of donations from users or passers-by. When dry the timber cells form an upright formation and upon the presence of moisture the timber petals will open up, providing an interactive feature to water donors.
In common with many structures at the festival, re-bar will be used to attached structural elements to the playa fl oor. The brushed steel base plates of the fence and basin system will have pre-drilled holes to enable this system of pegging to occur.

A hand pump increases pressure in the system to ensure that the water is at a suffi cient pressure to spray from the faucet. Two pumps, each serving a side of the system are located near the water disposal area were is it hoped that users will interact with the system upon completing their own washing up.
The wash basins drain to the central evaporation pond where the water is absorbed by the evaporation device and evaporated back into the atmosphere.

1. Evaporation Pond constructed and gridshell base constructed from timber birch. Re-bar used to connect timber ring beam to the playa fl oor. Poly-vinyl sheeting added to create waterproof membrame to avooid contaiminating the playa fl oor.
2. Steel supports that form the outter ring containging the solar pipes and sinks are assembled. The brushed steel base plates are connected via re-bar to the playa fl oor and the vertical steel support poles screwed to the base plates.
3. The black plastic 35mm diametere solar pipes that provide hot water are thred through the pre-assembled ringlets on the vertical steel supports. The 30m lengnth per system should heat the water to a temperature of between 40o and 46o over a period of 30 minutes during the daytime.
4. The sinks consisting of water containers cut down the middle provide a robust and enviromentally friendly sink basin. The depressed rings of the container correspond to the semi-circular steel supports.
5. The gridsell is assembled on the playa fl oor and then crained into positioned and attached to the base timber ring-beam.
6. Water containers for collecting water donations are placed around the Evaporation Station.
