NOVEMBER 15, 2015 Welcome! Those who love Jesus and those who are searching, welcome! We gather to hear from God, to learn from God, to talk to God, and to go out with God. Visitors, we are eager to share with you the joy we have in knowing Jesus. Family members, it is a blessing to be with you once again. May we all grow in knowledge and love of Christ as we worship. In reading 1 Corinthians 14, we notice a large principle Paul is trying to draw for the church’s worship, namely that our public worship is to be intelligible (or understandable) to all kinds of hearers. Worship sidebars are an attempt to help us to understand why we do what we do and what certain elements signify and mean in our service. Whether you’ve wor- shiped with us for a while, or wheth- er you’re new; whether you’re a Christian or don’t consider yourself a follower of Jesus, our hope is that these notes help make this time informed and purposeful.

Let the fire and cloudy pillar lead me all my journey through.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION Rev. Doug Ashley

We humbly come before you, Lord Jesus, and confess that once again we have

failed to be grateful. We have envied what others have, we have prided over who we

think we are, we have sought revenge on those we believe disrespected us, we have

lusted after pleasures outside your will. And all the while, we have sat in judgment

over those doing the same thing.

Heal and change us, O Lord. Help us to love our fellow ungrateful rebels. Fill

our hearts with your compassion and grace. Fill our hands with your mercy. Fill our

minds with forgiveness. Open us to Holy Spirit’s work in our midst. In the grace-

filled name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON He personally carried our sins

in his body on the cross

so that we can be dead to sin

and live for what is right.

By his wounds you are healed. -2 Peter 2:24

CHILDREN’S LESSON Rev. Doug Ashley

PROCLAIMING

November 15, 2015

The Apostles’ Creed with our Children. If you have been with us the past couple of months, you know that we are teaching our children the Apostles’ Creed. The creed was not written by the Apostles but summariz-es the core doctrines of the Christian faith. Not only does learning the creed teach our children the essen-tials of our faith, it also teaches them that they, too, are invited to be active worshippers during Sunday church. For by learning the creed, they are now prepared (even those who can’t yet read at this level) to join us when we recite it during our worship services. We encourage you to foster that sense of intergenera-tional worship by joining the children in their words and hand motions as the Apostles’ Creed is recited this morning.

THE LORD AT WORK THROUGH LONGVIEW EPC Rev. Beau Sullivan

*Miracle In My Heart

We are called to be prophets to this nation

To be the Word of God in every situation.

Change my heart, change my heart today.

Who’ll be the salt if the salt should lose its flavor?

Who’ll be the salt if the salt should lose its flavor?

Change my heart, change my heart today.

Lord, loose the chains of oppression, Lord, set the captives free.

Lord, fill my life with compassion.

Shine your light, shine your light, shine your light through me.

Work a miracle in my heart, work a miracle in my heart,

Work a miracle in my heart, O Lord, today.

Lord, take all my lies, take all of my greed;

Let me be a sacrifice to those who are in need.

Change my heart, change my heart today.

Lord, without your power it’s all just good intentions;

Lord, without your grace, who could find redemption.

Change my heart, change my heart today.

*BENEDICTION Rev. Shelley Kral

POSTLUDE Make My Life a Prayer to You Melody Green

*Please stand as able

SENDING

The benediction is not just a way of ending the meeting, but an action in which God himself, speaking through the human worship leader, pronounc-es his favor on the people. A biblical benediction is, in effect, a summary of the gospel: “and now may the love of God, and the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all, Amen.” Like a mother giving her child a kiss at the door before the child leaves for school, God says to his children as they leave the meeting, “I love you and will be with you as you go.” (John Jefferson Davis, Worship

and the Reality of God, 103).

So what are we supposed to do during the benediction? It is appro-priate to lift our heads and to hold our hands out, palms up. We lift our heads as a symbol that God does not leave us wallowing in our sin, but through Christ, He graciously lifts our head to look upon Him as a Friend once again, that we might receive His blessing rather than His righteous curse. We lift our hands to symbolize our need and eagerness to receive God’s

blessing.

Advent Packets: A lot is written about putting Christ

back into Christmas. But what does that look like? May

we suggest using our Advent Packets as a path forward in

that endeavor? Included in the packet is a four- lesson

Advent Guide inviting you each week of the season into a

new part of the Christmas story, then into a personal

response. Also included is a Family Advent Chain that

children of any age may cut and paste together in order to

count off the 25 days until Christmas with scripture readings

and prayer themes. We hope you will take advantage of

these offerings. You may find them on a table in the foyer

of the church.

Angel Tree: Once again we will be helping provide

Christmas gifts to some of the children of Ware Elementary

school. Because these are children facing severe material

poverty, they are in want of some of the most basic child-

hood needs. There are a limited amount of envelopes in the

foyer for children for whom you may purchase gifts. If more

children are brought to our attention, more envelopes will be

displayed, so be sure and check weekly. If you have any

questions, please contact Terrye Hudson or Shelley Kral.

Childcare Workers Needed: We are looking for

childcare workers who love children to work in our nursery

for Tuesday nights twice a month , Wednesday nights, and

Sunday Mornings. Workers need to be 18 years of age,

however we will make exceptions for youth who are 16

years of age and above to work with an adult. The rate of

pay is $10 an hour. If you are interested or know of some-

one, please contact Cheryl Wood at cwood@epclongview.

org.

Sign Up for Christmas Eve Family Service: Please let us know if your child would like to be part of our

Family Christmas Eve service at 4:30 p.m. Children can

participate by singing, playing an instrument, reading,

etc. If you have questions, please contact Cheryl Wood,

Director of Children’s Ministry for more information.
