When we face trials, disappointments, and ever-changing demands, we can have peace knowing God is in control. When we feel the suns warmth, the gentle or not-so-gentle Kansas breeze, or surprisingly see green grass in the summer months, we can cherish the fact that our Holy Trinity hasnt abandoned us but is creating beauty out of chaos, bringing assurance out of anxiety, and ush- ering in joy in the midst of darkness. Weve grown to appreciate each others smiles more and enjoy each others presence more. Though negativity can surround us, we can choose to encourage and inspire. Pastor Trish’s Notes

As we turn another page in our planners or move onto another month in our calendars, I’m reminded of God’s words in Isaiah 43:18-19, “‘Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?’” This has been a year of constant change, but we know our foundation of faith is solid. When Jesus was tested in the wilderness, he focused on God’s words (Matthew 4:1-11). Mark’s gospel tells us that “angels attended him” (1:13). Matthew tells us that too (4:11). When we face trials, disappointments, and ever-changing demands, we can have peace knowing God is in control. When we feel the sun’s warmth, the gentle or not-so-gentle Kansas breeze, or surprisingly see green grass in the summer months, we can cherish the fact that our Holy Trinity hasn’t abandoned us but is creating beauty out of chaos, bringing assurance out of anxiety, and ush-ering in joy in the midst of darkness. We’ve grown to appreciate each other’s smiles more and enjoy each other’s presence more. Though negativity can surround us, we can choose to encourage and inspire. Our words reveal our hearts and attitudes, but more importantly we know our words and actions reveal our faith to others. I’m humbled by the crowds who searched and found Jesus. Many needed healing. Countless needed comfort from the trials of their lives, some trials we face too. Though possibly exhausted in his humanness, Jesus continued strengthening, encour-aging, and uplifting others. As this pandemic continues, we will continue facing new challenges but God is using us to respond to our neighbors’ needs in new ways. “‘See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up’.” Do we perceive God’s opening our hearts, minds, eyes, and ears to something new? Are we excited God wants to use us in new ways for His glory? With the Vacation Bible School and the school year beginning soon, let’s celebrate the words from Faith We

Sing 2145, “I’ve got peace like a river,” “I’ve got joy like a fountain,” and “I’ve got love like an ocean in my soul.”

May the assurance of our Holy Trinity flow through us as we reveal the Holy Spirit’s peace, Jesus’ joy, and God’s

love onto everyone we meet.

Blessing of the Backpacks I will continue my tradition of blessing young students’ backpacks before school begins. Please continue

praying for everyone making decisions about this school year. For the Garfield UMC, if requested I will bless stu-

dents’ backpacks during an evening Back to School event in Gazebo park on August 4th. Since school begins in

Larned on August 20th, I will bless students’ backpacks during the August 16th LUMC worship service. In this

unusual time, I’ll offer Larned UMC students and their parents two choices. For those present during worship, I will

ask each student to stand up and show his/her backpack to the congregation while social distancing is maintained.

Then, I will bless the student’s backpack. For the on-line worship service option, if parents would like their young

students to pose with their new backpacks, take photos, and e-mail the photos to the church office, I’d be happy to

display the photos before and as I bless the students’ backpacks. For that option, parents, please have their photos to

the office by August 11th. We know prayers and blessings travel well. We also have the times and dates to assemble

and distribute the Back to School tote bags on the calendar or in the bulletins. I thank everyone in advance for pa-

tience and understanding.

The UMW annual breakfast has been moved to Wednesday,

August 5th at 8:00 AM.

We thank those who donated their time and talents to provide patriotic gift bags for children and their families before the July 4th holiday. The gift bags were placed on both churches' grounds so all of us can appreciate our veterans, and the rights and freedoms we have, and cele-brate the holiday in a fun way. We hope everyone had a safe and wonderful July 4th.

We would just like to thank everyone who made cookies. You all are amazing. We had a really good turnout at the

fundraiser last night. We couldn’t have done so well with-out your help. The cookies were perfect!!

Jeslyn and Gayla are scheduled to leave for Mayo on Au-gust 2. We will keep you posted.

Tamra Clawson the Volunteer Area Coordinator for Operation Christmas Child

will be speaking about her experiences distributing the Shoeboxes in

Namibia, Africa in May of 2019.

Sunday, August 16th at 6:30 PM

at the Larned UMC

On August 16th, we will have the privilege of Tamra Clawson’s sharing her Operation Christmas Child shoe-box distribution experiences. Whether we can gather to assemble shoeboxes, we can still collect donations or we can create a shoebox on-line. According to https://www.samaritanspurse.org/operation-christmas-child/covid-19/, this option is “a convenient and personal way to give shoebox gifts directly from home. You make it your own by choosing from a list of gifts, then adding a letter and a photo. We’ll pack it for you and send it off!” We can create an on-line shoebox at https://www.samaritanspurse.org/operation-christmas-child/buildonline/. Let’s safely gather to hear Tamra’s wonderful memories of sharing shoeboxes with children in Namibia, Africa.

We know all too well COVID-19 has made our lives different from before. We can’t do everything that we used to do, but we can cheer people up. Would you help our VBS participants with their mission project? I'm asking us to show some Bible hero power by writing a message, creating a card, or drawing a picture & mailing it to the wonderful peo-ple at Country Living at 710 W. 9th, Diversicare at 1114 W. 11th St., the Pawnee Valley Community Hospital’s staff at 923 Carroll Avenue, or someone else who has touched our lives. We can even drop off coloring or activity books, or have window visits with Diversicare or Country Living residents if we call in advance. We can cheer someone up, tell someone “Thank you," or sing a song. Even though we haven't been able to see each other as much as we want, we have never stopped caring for others.

Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. Galatians 6:2

Finance Committee This has been a difficult year, a year in which we have experienced things we had never given thought to even happening. As we welcomed 2020, thought was never given to businesses closing, individuals being quaran-tined in their places of residence, being unable to attend the funeral of a loved one, churches having worship services curtailed, schools closed, and the fear for our own safety and health. It has happened; however, we have survived because we knew God took every step with us. He directed our footsteps and ensured our safety. Your generosity has, provided the financial support needed for the church to carry on its ministries, i.e., on-line worship for our spiritual growth, weekly mailings to keep congregants informed, kids activity bags and gifts on the church lawn to keep our children connected to God and the church, fed the hungry through free food distributions, Food Pantry and Kids Summer Food Program, card ministry to the Nursing Facilities when the residents could have no visitors, and ZOOM meetings to conduct business affairs of the church. YOU MADE ALL THIS POSSIBLE! As you review the Financial Summary for June, you will note expenses out-weighed income. You need to be aware of this to ensure our financial situa-tion does not spiral downward. We know generosity because we know God. The greatest generosity we will ever witness was God giving His Son for us. Never, can we even hope to be that generous. Now we must refocus and change our thinking. No longer can we think, “What is the smallest budget we can have to keep the church open?” In 2 Corinthians 8, we are called to give eagerly; give from what we have, not give from what we have not. This ensures no one is pre-cluded from giving; it matters not if your income is high or low. Take time to review your income and spending. How does your church offering com-pare to your spending on drinks and snacks, movies, sports events, entertain-ing, and unnecessary purchases. God wants you to have joy in your life; He does not expect you to forego things that are pleasurable. He does ask, “Is your spending to accomplish God’s work a priority or is your giving to God out of your loose change?” What you give is a decision between you and God; seek discernment through prayer. Give cheerfully (God loves a cheerful giver), out of your means, and be regular in your giving. Don’t forget, God’s work goes on every day! Your gifts are needed those Sundays you are not in church. Make it a practice to catch up each Sunday you miss. We honor God through worship and giving. As part of the Larned United Methodist Church, we are a community and never have the sole responsibility of doing God’s work. We are all in this together. Submitted by Janice Froetschner

Back to School Event August 4th, Garfield Gazebo Park

6:00-7:00 PM (or as long as supplies last) You’re invited to donate school supplies to help local families. Items needed include Kleenex boxes, child-safe scissors, glue sticks, crayons, notebooks, hand sanitizer (60% alcohol), and puzzles or other fun toys for ages 3-5th grade. All donations are due to the church by 2:00 pm August 4th. We will need 3 volunteers to assemble and 3 to distribute the bags. Besides distributing the school supply donations, we will provide refreshments. If request-ed, the pastor will bless students’ backpacks.

July was really fast and maybe it is because of so many closures. We had to readjust our schedules and cancel a lot of appointments. But I for one am glad we did not have to cancel our nations birthday. That would have been so sad. We were coming home from Wichita and we got to see an array of fireworks all over the country. Thank you so much for the Veterans that gave us our freedoms. For the ones that fought the valiant battles, some lost their lives so we could have ours. Thank you SO much. I especially want to thank God for His Son, so we can enjoy life as we do now. It has been really warm so make sure that your neighbors are faring ok and they are not suffering from the heat. I pray that the wheat harvest was good for all of you. I have talked to some and they were pleasantly pleased with the yields. SO thank you Jesus. We could use some nice gentle rains, no more hail the size of tennis balls and golf balls. (Those belong to the sports people.) I am not one of those either. Ok. Keep praying for our coun-try and the upcoming elections. Please pray for our sick friends and the ones that can’t take care of themselves. I sure miss them in church. Thank you Pastor for you words of encouragement in your ser-mons and for your positive attitude. Stay strong. Thank you Brenda for keeping us informed on all of the goings on and the events of the week. God bless each and every one of you in our churches and stay well. Till next time. God bless Love Elaine
