Evaluation
Roles and Responsibilities
First Thoughts
Practicum Liaisons Really Do Read These Documents.
Feedback is essential to student growth and learning.
Provides a “Gate” for the Profession Allows the student an arena for
further learning.
Issues That Warrant Concern
Signatures on the document Credit Recommended (Yes/No) Specific feedback on Strengths and
Concerns A Face Sheet Concerns Raised in a timely fashion Turning in the Evaluation
Evaluative Statements New Evaluation Examines Knowledge,
Values and Skills. Rating Scales Range From No
Opportunity to 4. Also Incorporates Value Set around
Social Justice and Multicultural Issues Each Evaluation Separated by Level of
Study, i.e., Clinical/Contextual, Admin, etc.
Evaluative Statements
Write down an evaluative statement that describes how you see your student’s learning progress in an area of Practicum.
Components
Specific Descriptive Areas of Strength Areas Where You’d Like To See
Your Student Progress
Evaluation Process Formal Evaluations occur once a
quarter. Hopefully evaluation is a regular part of your work with students.
In Summer Quarter, Practicum office mails the document. All other quarters, students receive in their mail boxes
Once the student receives the evaluation they pass the document onto you.
Relationship Issues Students are often more Nervous then
they may appear. This is the time when they need clear
feedback on what worked and what didn’t.
Also give feedback on where you’d like to see them grow professionally
Let students know evaluation is a process and not the end of the world.
Student Roles
The student should advise you of the evaluation’s existence in a timely manner.
Have the student do their part first Some students do not feel
comfortable evaluating their work, while others really do.
PI Role
Practicum Instructor works on the evaluation independently and in conjunction with the student evaluation of their learning experience.
Set aside a formal time to go over the document.
Make this time Important but not necessarily Serious.
Grading and Credit Issues Practicum Instructor recommends Credit/ No
Credit. Practicum Liaison recommends final grade.
Issues that would warrant assigning No Credit. 1. Student does not complete the assigned time
at the Practicum.2. Student does not complete the assigned work.3. The Student does not complete assignments in
a satisfactory manner. The School of Social Work does not assign
partial credit.
