Looking back at myPreliminary task, what do I

feel I have learnt in theprogression from it to the full

    product?

I felt our Preliminary task was a greatopportunity for me to learn the

    process, filming and the editing

involved when making a film; I think itprovided me with the roots which Icould build upon as I progressed. I

became familiar with the technologyand equipment. It also allowed me todiscovered a few of many issues that

can arise when producing a film.

    Introduction

I have learnt the importance of planningahead for every single detail when making afilm. I did not know how significant this was

when making our preliminary task. Forexample, we did not make a detailedstoryboard for our preliminary task, howeverwe realised it was needed so I made a very

precise, thorough one for when we filmed inJanuary. However, we did diverge from thestoryboard slightly if we saw a good shot that

    we could possibly film.

On a micro, technical level we observed andused the conventions of continuity editing ratherwell in our Preliminary task. We could see theeffect this success had on our work so we aimed

to continue this when we filmed and edited ourtitle sequence. They included: the 180 degreerule, match on action and shot-reverse-shot.

I felt we managed out time well whenfilming and editing. We had goals thatwe wanted to work towards; forexample - we aimed to finish editing bythe end of February (2012).

Regarding editing we made numerous mistakes in our preliminarytask that we amended in our opening title sequence. For example, inour preliminary task we had a lack of continuity. As Liat puts her handup towards her face, it cuts to the reverse shot which shows heractually placing her hand on the table:

So when it came to editing our title sequence I wanted to match theshots up perfectly by zooming into the timeline to have completecontrol. As you can see below, the depot worker raises up his torch andas it cuts to the next shot it is in the exact same place it was in theprevious shot:

This continuity editing is also present inthe next two shots:

In addition, I learnt how to edit thesound of clips when editing. In ourpreliminary task, in one shot (Liat

walking towards desk) there was veryloud background noise that we didn'tknow how to mute:

However we have learnt howto edit the volume of each clipso this error did not happen

    again.

Organising the group was mainly carried outusing technology such as BBM, Facebookand Skype. We had group discussions after

our media lessons to discuss anything thatwas urgent/needed. We took numerous rolesthroughout the process but we all did a bit ofeach role to see where we felt most

comfortable. For example: Joel organised thelocation, I did a large amount of the editingand Megan/Liat were responsible tointerviewing our possible audiences. Filming

was split evenly between the four of us.

To conclude, I believe our Preliminarytask introduced me to the many tasks Ihad ahead, I acknowledged how manythings there were to organise and how

editing takes far longer that you wouldexpect. This task started to developmy technological skills as well as myplanning and time management skills.Without the Preliminary task, I feel Iwouldn't have produced an openingtitle sequence to this standard as Iwould have been learning skills as Ifilmed/edited the final product insteadof learning them before hand (thePreliminary Task).
