Citation preview
Carol Mason Kelly
• To evaluate the lint yield and fiber quality of 72 different genotypes across three different irrigation levels • To examine any trends that might have occurred, either within an environment or across environments.
• To focus on the adaptability of genotype performance as it is affected by water availability.
•To gain valuable knowledge that can be used as groundwork for future studies with similar interests.
• 3- Randomized Complete Block Designs.
• 4 replications • 3 Irrigation Levels:
• .1 in./day, .2 in./day, .3 in./day •Drip irrigation
• 72 genotypes: • 60 Experimental & 12 Commercial
• 2 Years of data: Yield and Fiber (HVI & AFIS)
2003: Planted on May 19th
First Hard Freeze on November 23rd
(set record for latest)
Harvested December 18th – 21st
2004: Planted on May 27th
First Hard Freeze on November 3rd
Harvested December 20th & January 21st
• Climatic Differences between years • Stability and the controversies
• For this study - adaptability
• Preliminary design of the study• Advantages• Limitations

Irrigation Treatment
• There are strong interactions between genotypes and the environment
• Environmental affect varied among genotypes
• The presence of such a strong interaction should be accounted for in breeding programs
• Trends were somewhat unpredictable
• Choosing an environment for selections is important yet EXTREMELY challenging
•One single environment should not be used for selections.
• Base irrigation levels on estimated ETs• 25%, 50%, and 75%
• Fewer number of entries•20 - 30
• More than one location• at least 2 maybe 3
• Included a rain fed treatment•having a dry-land component would be very beneficial
• Expect the Unexpected!
