Evaluation of the effectiveness and
economic benefits of Bio-slurry as a
fertilizer in Sukuma wiki production
General lack of data showing the effects on
yields upon bioslurry fertilizer application calls
for need for data applicable in a climate, soil,
crop, rainfall, and humidity which is relevant to
Kenya. A study will be conducted to assess the
effectiveness of bio slurry as a fertilizer and
whether it can increase crop yields
and therefore financial income for smallholders’
farmers and entrepreneurs. The trial will be done
in association with the Kenya National Federation
of Agricultural Producers (KENFAP). KENFAP have
subsidized approximately 8,000 biogas systems at
KES 25,000. This subsidy is coming to an end.
KENFAP wish to prove the economic benefits of bio
slurry fertilizer to enable farmers to purchase biogas
units. The weight of Sukuma wiki will be analyzed
and compared using experimental parameters
including plant height, leaf number and diameter
and total harvest weight in a study site in Thika. A
total efficacy report will be produced at the end of
the trial study.
