productsandservices.Thecompanyemploysapproximately~3,000peopleandgeneratesmorethan
$1Binannualrevenue.
InJune2017,PolycomannouncedanewsolutioncalledPano–awirelessandwiredpresentation
solutionintendedtomakeitquickandeasyformeetingparticipantstopresentandsharevarioustypes
ofcontent.
InMay2017,PolycomcommissionedtheWainhouseResearch(WR)testteamtoperformathird-party
assessmentofPano.Tofacilitatethiseffort,Polycomprovidedapre-releaseversionofthePanodevice,
andaSharpPN-L703B1080ptouch-capable70”display.
Thisdocumentcontainstheresultsofourhands-ontesting.
Understanding Pano Panoisa4K-capablewirelesspresentationsolution(WPS)thatincludesanarrayofadvancedfeatures
andcapabilities.
ThePanopackageisavailablewithanMSRPofUS$1,990fromanetworkofPolycomchannelpartners/
resellers,andincludesthefollowing:
- Panobaseunit
- Accessories(VESAmount,cables,etc.)

Hands-On Testing System Installation ThePanobaseunitcanbeplacedonatableorinsideacredenza,installedinanequipmentrack
(requiresarackshelf/mountingkit–notincluded),ormountedalmostanywhere(onawall,undera
table,onthebackofadisplay)usingtheincludedVESA-compatiblemountingadaptor.Giventhebase
unit’ssmallsize,weexpectsomecustomerswillsimplyaffixthedevicetothebackofthein-room
displayusingVelcro.
InstallingPanorequiresonlypower,
network,andasingleHDMIconnection
betweenthebaseunitandthedisplay.
ThankstoPoE+support,bothpowerand
networkcanbeprovidedviaasingleCATx
cable.
Whenpowerisfirstapplied,thesystem
bootsupanddisplaysthePanoinitialsetup
page(seeimageatright).
Toconfigurethesystem,theinstaller(user,administrator,etc.)simplyenterstheIPaddressdisplayed
on-screenintoanywebbrowserandstepsthroughthesetupwizardwhichincludes:
- ChangePassword–theinstallermustchangethedefaultpassword
- SystemLanguage
- CloudRegistration–allowstheinstallertoeithersign-intoanexistingPolycomCloudaccountor
createanewaccount
- DeviceName
TheinstallerthenclickstheFinishbutton,at
whichpointthePanosystemrebootsandis
readyforuse.
Afterthesystemreboots,theinstallernowsees
thePanowebuserinterfaceinhisbrowser.This
UIprovidesaccesstovariousadditionalsystem
settings(e.g.enablewirelesssharingprotocols,
definewhetherpin-codesarerequiredfor
sharing,etc.).
Forourhands-ontesting,weusedPano’sdefault
settings.Allinall,ittookuslessthan10minutes
toinstallPanowithinourlabenvironment.

Wired(HDMI)PresentationTotestwiredpresentationsupport,weconnectedanHDMIcablebetweenthePanodeviceandthefour
testPCslistedabove.Inallcases,theHDMIcontentwasdisplayedontheroomdisplayproperly.
WirelessPresentationusingthePanoAppThePanoappisafreesoftwareapp,availableforWindowsandMacPCs,whichcanbedownloaded
fromthePolycomwebsite.TosharecontentwiththePanoapp,wecompletedthefollowing:
- InstalledthePanoapponourfourtestPCs
- Clickedonthe“StartScreenSharing”button(seeimageatright),atwhichpointtheapp
presentedalistofnearbyPanodevices(dubbedroomswithintheapp)2
- SelectedthePanodevicetousefromthelist
- Enteredtheroom’spresentationpincode(ifthesystemisconfiguredtorequireacode)
- Selectedthecontenttosharefromtheon-screenlistpresentedwithinthePanoapp(seeimage
belowatright)
WeusedthePanoApptosharecontentfrombothWindowsandMacPCs,andinallcasesthesystem
workedasexpected,providingahighqualitycontentsharingexperience.

Mini2,andaMacBookAirnotebook.TosharecontentwithAirPlay,wecompletedthefollowingsteps:
- Clicked(onthenotebooks)orpressed(onthe
mobiledevices)theAirPlayicon.
- SelectedPanoasthe“AirPlayTo:”device
(seeimageatright).
- Enteredtherequiredpincode,atwhichpoint
ourdevice’sdisplaywasmirroredonthe
Panodisplay.Ondeviceswithmultiple
displays,themaindisplaywasmirrored.
WhenwesharedfromaMacPC,wethenhadtheabilitytochoose:
- Whichdisplaytomirror(ourtestMacPChastwodisplays)
- Whethertomirrororextendthedevice’sdisplay.Extendingessentiallycreatesanextravirtual
displayonthatdevicethatispresentedonthePanodisplay.
Wetestedalloftheabovecapabilities,andPanometorexceededourexpectation.Weespecially
appreciatedthefactthatPano’simplementationofAirPlayincludedadvancedfeatureslikeorientation
awareness(whenweturnedthemobiledevice,theimageturned)andtheabilitytoshareaudio.
Author’sNoteonAirPlay:Asabitofbackground,AirPlayisaproprietaryprotocoldevelopedbyApplethatenablesthesharingof
contentfromAppleMacandiOSdevicesoverIP(usuallywireless)toanydevicerunninganAirPlay
server(e.g.AppleTV).AllApplePCandmobiledevicesincludenativeAirPlayfunctionality
AirPlay,aswellassomeotherwirelesspresentationprotocols(e.g.GoogleCast),followaworkflowin
whichtheclient(e.g.notebookPC,mobiledevice)broadcastsadiscoverymessageovertheIPnetwork
todiscovercompatibleserversthatwillacceptaconnection.Allcompatibleserversthatreceivethe
discoverymessagethenrespondwithaconfirmationmessageincludingconnectioninformation.
Unfortunately,notallIPnetworksareconfiguredtoallowthedevicediscovery/responsetraffic.
AirPlayalsosupportsdevicediscoveryoverBluetooth4.0insteadoftheIPnetwork.Unlikemany
competingvendors,PolycomimplementedBluetoothdiscoverywithinPano’sAirPlaysupport,soAirPlay
userscanseealistofnearbyPanodeviceswithoutdependingontheIPnetwork.
Inaddition,AirPlayincludesamodecalledDirectPlayinwhichInternetmedia(e.g.aYouTubevideo)
thatausertriestoopenonaMacoriOSdeviceisinsteadopenedandplayeddirectlyontheAirPlay
server.Thisprovidesabetterviewingexperiencethanopeningthemediaonthedeviceandusing
screenmirroringtoshareitwiththeAirPlayserver.Unfortunately,Panodoesnotcurrentlysupport
DirectPlaymode.

WirelessPresentationusingMiracastWetestedPano’ssupportforwirelesspresentationusingMiracastwiththefollowingdevices:
- AMicrosoftSurfacePro4runningWindows10Pro
- ASamsunggalaxytab3LiterunningAndroid4.4.4
WhilewehaveanumberofconcernsrelatedtotheMiracastprotocolandworkflow,Pano’s
implementationofMiracastworkedasexpected,allowingustopresentcontentfromourWindowsand
AndroiddevicesonthePanodisplay.

Unlikeotherwirelesspresentationprotocols(e.g.AirPlay,MirrorOp,ChromeCast,etc.),Miracastuses
Wi-Fidirect(a.k.a.Wi-FiP2PorPeertoPeer)todiscoverandsendcontentfromthesourcedevicetothe
Miracastserver.
Theadvantageofthismethodologyisthatdevicescansendcontentwirelesslytodeviceswithoutthe
needtobeonthesameIPnetwork.
Unfortunately,therearemanydisadvantagesassociatedwithMiracastincludinglimiteddevicesupport,
possibleWi-Fiinterference,thefactthatsharedcontentisoftenscaled(reducesquality),acomplex
workflowthatisnotconsistentbetweendevices,andmore.AdetailedreviewofMiracastisbeyondthe
scopeofthisstudy,butsufficeittosayMiracastisnotideal.
AutomaticOn-ScreenLayoutPanoallowsuptofoursources,eachatuptofullHD(1080p)resolution,tobedisplayedonscreen
simultaneously.
- Thefirstsharedsourcewillbedisplayedinfullscreen.
- Sharingasecondsourceautomaticallychangestheviewtoaside-by-sidelayout.
- Sharingathirdsourceautomaticallychangestheviewtoaoneabove,twobelowlayout.
- Sharingafourthsourceautomaticallychangestheviewtoaquad-screenlayout.
Blackboard and Annotation Capabilities Panoincludesafewfeaturesnormallyfoundonadvancedcollaboration/ideationsolutions:local
(display-based)blackboardingandannotatingoversharedcontent.
Tousethesefeatures,Panomustbeconnectedtoacompatibletouch-capabledisplayorstandardUSB
mouse.Currently,Polycomhastestedandverifiedthatthefollowingtouchdisplaysprovidean“optimal
touchexperience”withPano:
- SharpPN-L703B-70”1080ptouchdisplay(usedforthisassessment)
- VolantiVB-6500-65”4Ktouchdisplay
HopefullyPolycomwillexpandthelistoftestedandsupportedtouchdisplaysinthenearfuture.

Whenconnectedtoacompatibletouchdisplay,thePano
animatedwelcomemessageautomaticallyexpandstoa
loopingmessagethatinvitestheuserstoshare/present
contentorwalkuptothedisplayandstartwriting(see
imageatright).
BlackboardCapabilitiesTousetheelectronicblackboardfunction,userssimply
needtotapontheboardandstartwriting.
Pano’sblackboardsupportsthefollowingcapabilitiesaccessiblefromaverticaltoolbaralongtheleft
sideofthedisplay:
- Threepensizes/widths
- Sixpencolors(green,blue,red,yellow,whiteandblack)
- Amagichighlighterfunction(writingdisappearsafterafewseconds)
- Anadvancederaserfunction(seedetailbelow)
- Undothelastwritingstroke
- Takeasnapshot
- Createnewpage(withwhiteorblackbackground)
- Displayhelppage
- Endthesession(whichalsoclearstheentireworkspace)
FirstwetestedtheblackboardingfunctiononthePolycom‘testedandapproved”Sharptouch
display.Withthisdisplay,Panoprovidedanexceptionalblackboardingexperience.Wewere
especiallyimpressedbythelow(~80ms)delaywhileinking.
Panoalsosupportsarangeofgesturecontrols.Forexample,movingtwoormorefingersina
circularmotionactivateerasermode.Similarly,movingtwofingersfromoneareatoanother
activatesapanfunction(movecontentfromoneareatoanother).Two-fingerpinchandzoomare
alsosupported,andtogethertheyprovideanalmostunlimitedvirtualblackboardsize.These
controlsmakeitquickandeasytojumpbetweenwritingtoimagemanipulation.
WealsotestedPanousinganadditionaltouchdisplaywehadinourlabenvironment.Onthismon-
Polycom-approveddisplay,theblackboardingfeaturesworkedfine,buttheresponsivenesswasslower.

AnnotationCapabilitiesPanoallowsuserstoannotateoveranyshared(wiredorwireless)content.Butunlikesomesolutions
thatsupportannotationoverstaticimagesonly(viascreenshots),Panosupportsannotationoverlive
andscreenshotimages.
Viewedanotherway,annotationisessentiallytheblackboardingfunctionwithadifferentbackground–
inthiscasethesharedcontentimage(s).
Annotationisalwaysavailableontheleftsideofthedisplaywheneveracontentsource(wired,wireless,
orevenblackboardimages)isonscreen.Bydefault,theannotationmarkingsactasanoverlayontopof
thelivecontentstream.
WetestedPano’sannotationcapabilitieswithexcellentresults.
The Pano Content Tray (with Advanced Layout Control) OneofPano’smostpowerfulandcompellingfeaturesistheabilitytonotonlysharemultiplecontent
items,butalsotocontrolandmanagethePanoon-screenexperience.
Panosupportslivesources(sharedwiredandwirelesscontent,andblackboardcontent),aswellasstatic
contentitems(snapshots).AndeachoftheseitemsliveswithinanareacalledthePanoTray.
Essentially,thePanoTrayisaqueueofavailablecontentitemsthatuserscanchoosetodisplay(make
active)ornotdisplay.TheimagebelowshowsthePanoTray(lowerarea)withseveralcontentitems.
ClickingonacontentitemwithintheContentTraycausesthatitemtobedisplayed(becomeactive).
Clickingonanothermakesthatsecondcontentitemactiveaswell(seescreenshotbelowshowingthree
activecontentitems–onelivesourceandtwoblackboards).

Thiscontentitemselectionprocesscontinuesuntilallfour(4)on-screenpositions/quadrantsareused.
Makingafifthcontentitemactivecausesthefirstactiveitemtobede-activated(first-infirst-out).
Inaddition,amulti-fingerpressonanactivecontentitemallowstheusertomovethatitemtoa
differenton-screenlocation.
Theprocessofchoosingwhichcontentitemstodisplayandpositioningthemon-screensoundsmuch
harderthanitis.Thecontrolsarequiteintuitive,andahelppageisjustasingletouchaway.
TheContentTrayandon-screenlayoutcontrolsmakeitquickandeasyto
createandmanipulatecontentwithPano.However,thePanoon-screenUI
doesnotcurrentlyofferawaytosaveoremailthecontenttoothers.
Fortunately,thePanoAppoffersasavefunction(seethedisplayiconatthe
bottomrightofthescreenshotatright)which:
- Takesasnapshotthatincludesallofthecurrentlyactivecontent
itemsbeingshownonthePanodevice
- Takessnapshotsofeachcontentitem(livesources,blackboards,
etc.)currentlywithinthecontenttray
- Savesallofthesesnapshotsontheuser’sPC(ornetwork/clouddrive)
Wetestedthesavefunction,anditworkedfine.However,thisislessconvenientthananon-screen
saveoremailbutton,andthisworkflowrequirestheusertoopenthePanoAppandconnecttothe
Panodevice.
Additional Features / Functions
IntegrationwithPolycomRealPresenceGroupSeriesEndpointsItcomesasnosurprisethatPolycomhasincludedsomedegreeofintegrationwithPolycomGroup
SeriesvideoendpointswithinPano.
AsshowninthePolycom-provideddiagrambelow,Pano’sHDMIoutputcanbeconnectedtothe
contentinputofaGroupSeriesendpoint.Inaddition,thePanowebuserinterfaceallowsadminsto
“pair”thePanodevicewithaGroupSeriesendpoint.
Oncepaired,PanowillsendanAPIcommandtotheGroupSeriesendpointinstructingittoactivate
contentsharingwheneversomeoneworkswiththePanodevice(e.g.connectingthePanoapptothe
device,sharingwiredorwirelesscontent,etc.).
Wetestedthiscapability,anditworkedasexpected.However,asitstandstoday,theintegrationis
one-sidedonly,meaningthattheGroupSeriesendpointdoesnotchangeitsbehaviorbecauseitis
connectedtoaPanodevice.Asaresult,theresultingexperienceisnotasseamlessasitcouldbe.

Forexample,whileinthisconfiguration,Pano’suserinterfaceisnotalwaysvisible.ToseethePanoUI
(andtheinstructionsuser’sneedtoconnecttoandusePano),oneoftwothingsneedstohappen:
- Auserneedstoactivatecontentsharingonthevideosystem.However,there’snothingthat
promptstheusertoactivatecontentsharing;thesecond(“allcontent”)displayiseitherblank
(whilenotinacall)ordisplayingnear-endvideo(whileinacall).
- AuserneedstoconnecttoPanosothatPanocommandsthevideosystemtoactivatecontent
sharing(viatheAPI).However,inmostcases,toconnecttoPano,theusermustenterapin
code.Unfortunately,thepincodeisdisplayedonthePanoscreenonly,whichisnotvisibleuntil
thePanoUIisvisibleonscreen.
TheabovesituationissomewhatofaCatch-22.
AdditionalNote–thePanoAdministratorGuidehighlightsadditionalwaystousePanowithGroup
Seriesvideoendpointsindualandtriple-monitorconfigurations,withorwithouttouch.Insomecases,
additionalAVhardware(e.g.ascaler/splitter)isrequired.However,eachoftheseapproachesinvolve
somedegreeofcompromise.
HopefullyPolycomwillenhancethisintegrationinthenearfuture.

ThePolycomCloudWhileinstallingPano,wecreatedafreeaccountonthePolycomCloudservice.Wethenregisteredour
Panodevice,usingitsuniqueMacID,tothePolycomCloudservice.
RegisteringaPanodevicetothePolycomCloudoffersahandfulofbenefitsincluding:
- Theabilitytoseethedevice’sstatus(onlineoroffline,name,IPaddress,MacID,etc.viathe
PolycomClouduserportal
- InclusionofthePanodeviceinthedirectoryofPanosystems
- Automaticfirmwareupdates
Inaddition,Polycomhasintroducedafeaturecalled,“CloudServiceContentSharing”thatallowsusers
toshareMicrosoftOneDriveforBusinessdocumentsviathePolycomCloud.Essentially,thePolycom
Cloudhandlestheuser’sauthenticationtoOneDrive,andtheworkflowtoshareOneDrivecontentisas
follows:
- AlistofavailableOneDrivecontentisdisplayedwithinthePanoapp
- Theuserselectsthecontentitemtobeshared
- Thecontentitemis“opened”withinthePolycomCloud
- Thecontentitemisthen“rendered”onPanoandontheuser’sdesktop
AlthoughtheCloudServiceContentSharingfeatureiscurrentlylistedasaPolycomLabsfeature,we
tookthetimetotestthisfunctionality.Intheend,althoughwewereabletoshareourOneDrive
contentsuccessfullyviathePolycomCloud,wethinktheworkflowaroundthisfeatureisnotquiteready
forprimetime.

Panobringsquiteabitofpowertothemeetingroom.
Asapartofthisassessment,wetestedvariousfeaturesandfunctionsofPanoincluding:
- Wiredandwirelesspresentation
- Blackboardingandcontentannotation
- Advancedfeatures(integration,cloud-basedmanagementandcontentsharing)
Simplystated–Panoisapowerfulwirelesspresentationsolution.Regardlessofthecontentsource
(WindowsPC,MacPC,mobiledevice,etc.),Panoprovidedahighqualitycontentsharingexperience.
Pano’sAirPlaysupportisanotherareaofstrengththankstoitssupportforBluetoothdevicediscovery.
Andthewiredcontentinputmakesitquickandeasyforgueststosharecontent.
Panoalsosupportsblackboardingandannotationoversharedcontentwhileusingacompatibletouch
display.Wefoundthedigitalinkingwithinthesystemtobeextremelyresponsive–amongthebest
we’veseen.Inaddition,wewereparticularlyimpressedbythebroadrangeofgesturecontrols
supported.Pano’sContentTrayandon-screenlayoutcontrolsalsoworkedextremelywell.Some
solutionsfocusonimagequality.Othersfocusoneaseofuse.Panocoversbothquitewell.
Ourtestingalsorevealedafewweakerareas.Forexample,sharingcontentfromAndroiddevices
dependsonMiracast–whichisalessthanidealprotocol.HopefullyPolycomwillreleaseaPanoappfor
Androidinthefuture.Inaddition,Panolacksanon-screensavebutton.AlsoPolycomhastestedand
verifiedonlyahandfuloftouchdisplaystodate.Andfinally,PanodoesnotcurrentlyofferanyAPIs,and
thecurrentlevelofintegrationbetweenPanoandPolycom’sGroupSeriesvideosystemsislimited.
Overall,PolycomPanoisawellperformingwirelesspresentationsolutionthatoffersarobustfeature-
setandstrongeaseofuse,atacompelling,sub-US$2kpricepoint.Basedonourtesting,Panoshould
berightathomeinalmostanymeetingroom.
