In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Masthead – the masthead is placed on the top, in the middle or to the left. It chose to place it all over the top.

Fonts – on the cover there are used different types of fonts to get variation.

Colour scheme – the colours in the magazine are mainly the same. I have used the colours black, white and red.

Cover lines – the cover lines are placed on different places on the page, in different fonts, colours and sizes. The cover lines give an impression what is inside the magazine. I got inspiration from Billboard using the plus and the coloured lines between the text.

Style of photography – My front cover picture is taking in a studio. I think the front cover photography's of Q and Billboard is taken in a studio as well, to get better colours. I used a white background because it matches my colour scheme.

Bar code – every magazine have a bar code, so that it can be sold in a store. Some magazines have it placed other places than the front cover.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Colour scheme – the colours used are still red, black and white.

Style of photography – the photo’s are taken in a studio, to make the quality better.

Fonts – the fonts are different depending on what the text is about. But the text regarding the same thing, such as the ‘features’, the same font and size is used. The page number is in italic, which makes it more feminine.

Writing style – I have written in a way that it seems more interesting. The article on the double page spread is written in such a way that people understand that it is in a music magazine.

Page numbers – all the pages have a page number on the bottom left of the page. All the pages in the magazine have it the same place.

Masthead – all the pages have a small or bigger masthead to let the audience know what’s on the page.

How does your media product represent

particular social groups? The class my media product represents is the middle class. The main person can afford to have different instruments, which a person from the working class would not afford. She wears nice, probably a bit expensive clothes.

She does not wear a lot of make up, which makes her more normal and neutral. She does not show a lot of skin and does not respond to the male gaze. In the photo’s on the cover and contents page she is smiling, showing the world that she is a happy teenage girl.

She also represents teenagers. Teenagers like to explore with different clothes, and that is what she does here with a studded, leather jacket.

There are no special social group represented in this magazine. It is aimed at most teenagers in the age 15-23.

What kind of media institution might distribute

your media product and why? Bauer Media Group might be the media institution distributing my media product. They distribute magazines such as Kerrang! and Q. They are both music magazines in the genres pop and rock. My media product goes under the genre pop, therefore I think Bauer Media Group might be good.

Because they already publish two music magazines, they will make even more money with a third magazine. This will make the audience believe there is a lot of competition, and they will maybe buy more than one magazine.

A disadvantage might be that there will be too many magazines, and there will be less focus on each of the magazines, and they will not be as good, which makes the readers not want to buy any.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

Age:- Teenagers aged 15-23. - People older than 23 will probably

not find it interesting, because the ‘main artist’ is a teenage girl.

- People younger than 15 are not in the target group because there are not many people under the age of 15 reading music magazines.

- The artist in the magazine are young, and it is mostly young people listening to their music.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

Gender:- It is more of a ‘gossip’-music magazine than

simply a music magazine, which makes it more interesting to girls.

- The colour scheme is more girly, with white, black and red.

- The stories are aiming more at girls than boys; “5 reasons why we love Taylor Swift”, a boy wouldn’t care to read that.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

Class:- The social class reading this magazine will be ABC1 on the NRS social grades. - Pop is more for middle class then for the working class. It is because they can afford music instruments, where working class are more likely to end up with hip hop, where you don’t use instruments.

How did you attract/address your audience?

Colour: I used a strong, red colour, not too many colours, looks better. The font colours are red, grey, white and black, but none is very strong – feminine.

Picture: A good looking girl, the picture is taken in a studio, looks more professional.

Font: looks handwritten, more personal. It is also very girly. The other fonts are simple and ‘thin’, which makes them more feminine.

Attract Address

Cover lines: people want to know where Nicki Minaj is going on tour.If someone wants to go see Rihanna, they see how she did in London, might change their mind. Exclusive interview, people want to read about what’s new and want to know it first

Photography: She does not respond to the male gaze, which makes her more innocent. She is wearing a studded, leather jacket, which makes her tough. She smiles, seems nice. She is standing in a relaxed way, and looks at the camera with a direct address, she looks self-confident and comfortable. People wants to read about her.

How did you attract/address your audience?

Attract

Colours: The colours are strong. There are not too many, which makes the magazine clean and looks better.

Pictures: There are not many pictures. Taken in a studio, looks more professional. Simple pictures. Jill Muri is no longer wearing the leather jacket, makes the page lighter.

Clean layout: The layout is not very busy, which makes it nicer to look at.

Address

Cover lines: ‘beat of the week’, you understand that it is the best or newest music, but it does not reveal anything about what’s actually on the page. Same with ‘new releases’.‘Behind the scene….’, people want to know how the concert was if they are planning on going to a Rihanna concert themselves. ‘Another #1 hit’, people wants to know what his new hit is!‘5 reasons why we love Taylor Swift’, why do you?‘5 favourites’, all the artist are famous, people want to read about them. ‘The festival you can not miss this summer’, nobody wants to miss anything! They have to read it.

Bars: the bars gives a good overview on the page, it is easy to find what you are looking for.

How did you attract/address your audience?

Attract

Layout: the layout is clean, and quite similar to the rest of the magazine. Looks good.

Masthead: The masthead has the same font as on the front cover. Gives a connected and more personal feeling.

Font: The text font is very simple and conventional.

Address

Masthead: On the masthead it is only the artist’s name, makes the readers want to know what the text is about.

Photography: The girl is wearing the same clothes as on the front cover, again gets a connection. Wearing a studded, leather jacket, and the serious look on her face makes her look tough and independent – role model.

What have you learnt about technologies from

the process of constructing this product?

Different types of technologies I have used:- Photoshop- Word- Blogger- PowerPoint- Surveymonkey- Canon camera- SlideShare- Paint- Dafont

PowerpointI used PowerPoint to make most of my work, except from the final result. I knew most there was to know about PowerPoint from before. When I had finished the PowerPoints, I took print screen, copied it to paint and put it on the blog.

SurveyMonkeyI used SurveyMonkey for my questionare. It was knew to me, so I had to learn how to make the question, finish the questionare, get the url for the questionare, and in the end, how to get the results.

Canon cameraWhen we used photostudio, we used a canon camera. We did not have to do anything else than pushing the button to take the picture, so I did not learn anything new.

WordI used word to write the article for the double page spread. Word is pretty straight forward, so I did not learn anything new, since I have used it before. SlideShareI used SlideShare to publish the surveymonkey results and the magazine analysis. I had never used slideshare before. I had to register, and then upload the powerpoint I had made. I then copied the html code for the slideshare and put it on my blog.

DafontI learned how to download fonts and get them into the computer.

Blogger

PhotoshopI had never used Photoshop before, so everything I did there was new to me. First I had to learn how to upload pictures, insert text and edit the pictures. The only editing I did on the photos were to change the levels. I know how to make the picture fade into the background. I know how to cut out pictures and make different layers on photoshop. I know how to use the ruler to make everything in line.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do

you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

When looking back at the time when I made the college-magazine, I feel more confident when using photoshop. Everything I wrote on the last page counts here. I did not know anything before, now I have a clear idea how to use the basic things at photoshop. I now know more about how magazines are made, and about the companies making magazines, such as the Bauer Media Group and Prometheus Global Media.
