The representation of the artist is

complicated, the character is just

seen as a musician at the start of

the video but as it progresses the

audience begins to see what the

character is like and what he does

in his everyday life. The artist is

shown as a guy who goes to

school, lives his life the way he

wants but is treated badly because

of the way that he is. He is bullied

and ignored by other students

which leads into why he hates his

life and why he wants to move

away.

The setting and location of the music video was not very wide. Most of the video was set inside the school which was a weak point, I did not intend on doing too much filming in the school but some of the needed to and then that theme carried on through a lot more of the video. The other location was at my house and the bus stop. The first and last scene were filmed inside of my house. The second scene was filmed at the bus stop and just before, this was one of the longer sequences and it contained narrative and performance.

The costume was the same throughout the music video. The costume consisted of a stripped shirt and plain t-shirt, some blue jeans and some lee cooper shoes, this is casual clothing which goes with the indie rock genre. I decided on this so the audience would know that it was all based in one day of the characters life and not over a few days. The main prop in the music video was the electric guitar, this played a large part as without it a lot of the scenes that I filmed would not have worked. This was the only prop I used in the music video as it was the only one I felt as if I needed.

The camerawork and editing was a long process, it took some time to complete as I had to work out what kind of angles I should do and then I had to get it to the media room where I could edit the video clips together in order to make my music video. I did the editing on iMovie as it was basic software and easy to use, but this meant I was unable to edit anywhere else as it is only those computers. Most of the recording took place in school as that is where a lot of my clips were based. I used the school’s cameras to do my filming, they are simple to use but they are not easy to connect with the apple mac’s so time was lost getting the videos onto the computers.

The performance stage of the music video was mixed in with the narrative. I tried to make the amount of performance I had equal to the amount of narrative. The performance stage was mixed with the playing of guitar and lip syncing, I did not do both of the sequences at the same time as I knew that I would not be able to pull it off. For the performance of the music video I tried to stick to what other indie rock artists do, stand around, sing the song and play their instruments, I feel as if I did this in my music video but something still could have been improved.

The narrative stage of music video is seen at four different points. These points show the character doing what he does everyday, going to school. At two of these points we see the character being bullied by other people at his school, this keeps up with the fact that he is an outcast and feels unwanted. I did not want to make the narrative to complicated as I felt as if it would put off the audience at make them think that it was un-realistic, which I did not want as indie rock songs are based on past experiences, in the case of my song this would be a dream falling apart and losing what was wanted the most.

The genre of the music is indie rock, this genre can be tricky to represent in a music video as the meaning of it is greatly affected by the lyrics, some songs can be happy and some can be sad but most of the songs that are indie rock are about life falling apart because of a lost love or a tragedy that has happened in their life. I tried to stick to this theme in my music video by showing the characters life being hard to live and having troubles that only have one solution that is often hard to reach, in this case moving to New York to become a famous musician.

The introduction of the character is at the start of the music video when we see him playing the guitar. This then goes on to him beginning his day by going to school. Throughout the video we see the character being put in different situations that either make him appear abnormal or like he does not belong, this theme is a constant throughout the whole of the music video. The main character was meant to look like a casual guy, someone that would be seen at school and would not be thought of as a loser.

For my music video I did not need to use any special affects as they were not needed. As this is an indie rock music video there was no need for explosions or a change in backgrounds as it was meant to appear to be realistic and part of the indie rock genre is being low budget and in the case of a low budget music video I did not need to use a green screen. Special affects do add a good feel to a video and I did think about using it to put an image of new york onto and then use it as a tease for the character, so he can see it but cannot reach it.
