Welcome EVA

Hello everyone and Happy New Year. We had agreat First Day Fly In, but due to weather was onthe second day of the year. The Board ofDirectors (BOD) had to make a decision topostpone or risk New Year’s morning being awash out. We made the right call and withMonday Jan 2 being a holiday for most anywayit worked out well. We served pancakes, sausage,

coffee and orange juice. Members brought plenty of delicioussides. We maintained our cooking club with the flying disorderdistinction.

The field is in the best shape I have ever seen it. We have takensteps to clearly define the runway boundaries. Please make everattempt to land and take-off from within the runway boundaries. One rule that has come up repeatedly is that all flying must bedone beyond the north edge of the runway or the dead-line. Thisis a very important rule and I request members make every effortfollow it. Flying inside the dead-line is for take-off and landingonly. That being said, if you have a new plane and want to getsome action photos doing low fly by passes, you want to take aclose look at the plane as it passes or a few tricks for the crowdthat is not prohibited but make sure you communicate yourintentions to everyone along the flight line. Flying in the runwayareas is the exception not the rule. It is also an AMA safety rule.I cannot emphasize enough communication along the flight line.Busy airports and aircraft carrier flight lines are as safe as theyare because everyone along the flight line knows what ishappening at all times. Please call out your intentions and if youare not sure that the person in the flying stations beside you heardyou politely ask them to acknowledge. We have also receivedsome input from members on modifications to the existing club

rules. The BOD will review these suggestions and make thenecessary updates to the club rules

I would also like to acknowledge the efforts of the board ofdirectors, Vice President Lin Andresen, Treasurer Verlin Boeder,Secretary Sid Frede, Membership Officer John Pomroy, SafetyOfficers Mike Wyman and Don Nelson, Newsletter Letter EditorMickey Ohland and Training Coordinator John Mitchell. Alsowelcoming Jerry Bauer as Safety Officer at Large. Please whenyou see these officers, thank them for spending their own freetime in busy lives to ensure this club runs as smoothly as it does. They all make my job easy.

Since this club runs as smoothly as it does, makes for very shortGeneral Membership Meeting programs. I encourage everyone, get up and tell us about your latest project, career, hobbies, latestgrilling technique, a very popular activity at EVA. Themembership meetings are about getting together and getting toknow one another. Feel free to speak up.

Until next time, Smile and Wave!

VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORTSubmitted by: Lin Andresen

Hello fellow East Valley Aviators. We have finallybeen blessed with great winter flying weather and theflying and talking is getting better every day. I havea couple of questions for you. Why do we fly modelaircraft anyway and why is it a great idea to belongto a great RC club like the East Valley Aviators?

Why Fly RC?

I’ve been involved in radio controlled model flyingfor quite some time now and I can’t think of a better

way to spend free or planned time. I actually started with littlegliders and rubber band powered drugstore planes and then movedon to simple kits. My interest in the hobby grew until I startedflying control line planes with nitro motors and then on to RCplanes. I’m sure many of you have similar stories and have foundaeromodelling to be a very rewarding and exhilarating hobby. MostRC pilots I know enjoy the hobby because they like to build and/orwork on model aircraft and be in control of the way it flies (mostof the time anyway.) The hobby also takes you to the “Great”outdoors where you can enjoy nature.

Why join a club like EVA?

One of the great things about joining a club is having theopportunity to mix with all kinds of like-minded folks from all agegroups and backgrounds. You can also get flight training from aqualified club instructor, learn, learn, learn, about every facet ofaeromodelling from many sources and participate in club activities(cookouts included).

One of the requirements of joining most clubs is to have an AMAmembership. This is a good thing in many ways. The AMAprovides insurance to members that can help with or take care ofinjuries or damages caused by the member. You can go to theAMA website for more details but the insurance does provide greatprotection at a reasonable price.

Now back to the activities.

Some of our activities at EVA involve cookouts and familyget-togethers. The Thanksgiving Turkey Roast and New Yearsmorning breakfast are two examples of our family orientedactivities. We also have some “Night fly” events that lets pilotsshow off their brightly lit and glo-in-the-dark aircraft. Some eventsinvolve work.

The East Valley Aviators has one event that is actually done as acommunity service in conjunction with Pinal County--it is theAdopt-A-Highway program. EVA has agreed to host highwaycleanup activities twice a year. We are responsible for picking uptrash along Ironwood Road one-half mile north and south of ourentryway. Pinal County supplies garbage bags, reflective safetyvests, and some safety advice. Our club provides volunteerworkers, water, and doughnuts. The next Ironwood cleanup willbe on February 25, 2017 at 8:a.m. This event is also a great timeto mingle, meet members, and do something for your communityand club.

Well, that’s all for now folks.

See ya at EVA….Lin

Well the New Year is here. I thought I would talkmore about the flying field rules. For the most partthe membership has been extremely prudent aboutadhering to the Club Field rules. My colleague DonNelson and I have chatted many times about theoperation at the field and would like to complementall who have respected the recommendations set forthin the Field Safety Rules. It’s everybody’sresponsibility to mind andenforce the safety rules. I wantto spend a few moments talking

about some more of the rules:

Rule 3. All AMA National Safety CodeRules apply to this field. This means that wecomply with the expectations of theAMA/MAAC rules. MAAC members shouldtake a look at the AMA rules just to makesure that there isn’t anything additional addedespecially with respect to the FAA ruling fordrones.

Rule 6. The Main Runway is open toall AMA Legal Aircraft.

A: The Electric Runway is open toelectric aircraft that weigh less thanor equal to 2 poundsB: The Helicopter Pad is for theoperation of helicopters both electricand gas powered. (we are consideringa multi rotor copter as a helicopter)This is self explanatory.

Rule 10. Take off and landings will be on the center line ofthe runway. The direction of the wind will indicate take off andlanding directions. Always land or takeoff into the wind. If youare unsure of the pattern please ask someone. Pilots taking offshould call their intentions and directions. A lot of peoplewho are flying can’t hear so well so “yell it out” please.Either the pilot or the spotter can call intentions and directions. Now that we have a marked center line on the runway it shouldn’tbe hard to land down the middle of the runway.

Rule 12. For your safety, there must be at least two peoplepresent when flying. A member pilot and anobserver. Please do not fly alone! It ismandatory that people flying FPV must havea spotter. If you are carrying a video monitoreither on the transmitter or on a head set thenyou are considered FPV.

Rule 33. Electric planes flying at the Electricfield must comply with the EVA Flying SiteRules. Basically rule 33 says “go back to rule1”.

I will continue to put other rules up so membersand be educated and make the safety record thebest it can be for the East Valley Aviators. Newmembers please take the time to read the fieldrules. They can be found on the web site underClub Documents. (No, there won’t be a quizJ)

Most important is Rule #1! Safe flying is NOAccident . . .

Mike

USING EXPO TO CONTROL YOURAIRPLANE

The second session of the Team Kaos "Intro to Aerobatics"Mini-Clinic was held Saturday December 10th. Variousmaneuvers were presented by Sid Frede and demonstrated byJohn Bentley.

Attendees then flew on a buddy box demonstrating the effect thatexpo can have on the performance and control of your airplane. The airplane was switched between 100% aileron throw @ 100%expo and 100% throw @ 0% expo on each flight. The differencein control was dramatic!

Almost uncontrollable at 0% expo, and very soft @ 100%. Thehappy median lies somewhere between for normal flying. Itbecomes your personal choice for your aircraft.
