Various high availability solutions are availableto keep your Enterprise Vault servers hum-ming along but storage protection can be adifficult, complicated and an expensive propo-sition. EVnearSync solves the problem usingyour choice of UNC addressable storage.

Create a reliable secondary copy of each andevery archived item, eliminating the need forbackup and simplifying the recovery process.Connect to a secondary copy in seconds ins-tead of using a lengthy restore.

To guarantee the consistency of the data, allitems are compared using a sophisticatedhash code, before the Enterprise Vault safetycopy gets purged from the mail-, file- or sha-repoint-servers. Only items where EVnear-Sync has successfully created a secondarycopy will be replaced with a shortcut.

A special fail-over mode allows EnterpriseVault to automatically enter backup-modewith data paths automatically re-pointed tothe backup locations.

How replication works:

1. EVnearSync checks the Enterprise Vault Databases for newlyarchived items.

2. It creates a hash code for the original File.

3. It replicates the item to the secondary location using objectbased replication mechanism (like CAS Systems).

4. There, it creates hash code for the replicated DVS-Files.

5. If the two hash-codes match, EVnearSync provides feedback to Enterprise Vault about the successful replication.

6. Enterprise Vault now replaces the Safety copy in the Mail-, File- or Sharepoint-Server with a shortcut or placeholder.

This is the home screen of the EVnearSync Administration Console.The operator gets an overview of EVnearSyncs activity and replication statistics. It is user friendly and supportiveeven when disaster operations have to be carried out.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

I have a SAN mirrored to my 2nd data centre. Why should I use EVNearSync?

Even if you mirror your LUNs with storage mechanisms to a second data center, you still have the needto backup your data. With EVnearSync the need for backups is eliminated.

What is the difference between Mirroring and Replication and why is my backup freed up if I use EVnearSync?

Typically, Storage Mirroring works at a block-level. This is ideal if you have to provide real time failovermechanisms for file systems or databases (e.g. Exchange). But if the file system in your first data-centergets corrupt, this will be mirrored to the second data-center as well. So you still need to backup yourdata. EVNearSync replication works on a per item level object based. As it keeps the individual file-systems logically separate, no file system corruptions will be replicated.

In addition EVNearSync integrates with Enterprise Vaults Safety Copy mechanism: The original data on the Mail-, File- or SharePoint Server you archive from will only be deleted once thereplication has successfully completed. One more reason why you dont need a daily backup any more.

Do I still have to backup the Enterprise Vault Index?

Not necessarily. If you want to replicate the Index, you could use the Index Replication in EVnearSync and define a recurring schedule (i.e. every 8h). Only the modified data will be replicated. Of course you can create snapshots of older indexes on the target.

How can I replicate the EnterpriseVault SQL Databases?

Create a maintenance job in Microsoft SQL which dumps your Enterprise Vault databasesinto a backup file. Then use the SQL Backup Replication in EVnearSync to replicate those files to your DR location as well.

I have more than one EnterpriseVault server. How could I integrate EVnearSync?

EVnearSync can handle multiple Enterprise Vault servers and of course different VaultStores. You can install EVNearSync on each Vault Server so that the Data is pushed to the secondary location. Alternatively you can install EVNearSync on any server in the target location. The archived data will then be pulled.

I have to archive a lot of data every night. What is the performance of EVnearSync?

Of course replication performance depends on many factors like network bandwidth andlatency, disk performance and server load. Typically, we can replicate more than 100000items per hour per Enterprise Vault server.
