The 2nd edion of the EuroSpeleo Protecon

Symposium whose first edion was at Vercors 2008,will also take place at that me.

50 years! Some do not even want to talk about, others look back andreflect on their lost youth and relive past exploratons, a few drinkmore than they should to forget, and us, well, we are going to celebratetogether in the town that gave birth to our federaton: MILLAU.

In the heart of the town in Victory Park (Parc de la Victoire), underthe plane trees, in the middle of the stands and actvites, notfar from the refreshment area, we will all share a huge birthdaycake beneath the fireworks before boogying untl dawn with theEuropean cavers that made the trip for the 8th EuroSpeleo Forumbeing held at the same tme.

This anniversary is also dedicated to Gilles Colin who will watchfrom above. He is the one who told me a few years ago when wewere talking about it that Millau, of course, was the natural choice,but ten years later we could have returned to Ollioules.

This anniversary is also the opportunity for all the cavers,canyoneers and cave divers to get together afer spending 3 yearswithout a Congress. Please mark this date on your calendars andcome spend 12 days with us from May 8 and 20, 2013 between theAscension and Pentecost holidays and visit the caves, holes, canyonsand siphons of the Grands Causses. Patrick Deriaz from the Library of the SwissSpeleological Federaton and his internatonalteam have finished their work on volume 46of the Speleological Abstracts (SA), whichis now available. This volume covers the year2007 and the editorial team is working hardto remedy the current backlog untl 2013 byreleasing in due course the next volumes ofthe SA covering the years 2008-2011.

Thousands of cave- and karst-relatedpublicatons are made accessible annually bythe SA under thematc and regional categories,making this bibliography the most significantinternatonal caving publicaton. Many of theentries come with short descriptons of thecontent of the relevant artcles. Consequently,the Speleological Abstracts are the last instancefor everybody when preparing their ownspeleological artcles or planning their owncaving expeditons.Simultaneously with the new volume 46, aCD-ROM featuring the complete content (sofar) of 20 years of bibliographical work in the

framework of the SA is also available.

WE CELEBRATE THE 60THANNIVERSARY OF THE FIRSTEXPLORATIONS OF THE CAVE KNOWNTODAY AS THE VECCHIA DIGA CAVE.FOR THE UNIONE SPELEOLOGICAPORDENONESE CAVING GROUP OFTHE ITALIAN ALPINE CLUB CAI USP,THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT DISCOVERY

FROM AN EDUCATIONAL PERSPECTIVE.

On June 29, 1952, the engineer CorradoCorradino, director of constructon ofthefirst dam on the Cellina river, visitedwith a few friends the caves found onthe cliffs facing the Cellina river gorgeand published a detailed report.To celebrate this moment, the USPis planning a series of iniaveswhich will start Saturday June 30th inValcellina and connue throughoutthe enre summer. The summerseries will end with the presentaonof a book that highlights the caveshistory, its unique features and allacvies that have taken place in thecave itself.

PROGRAM:1. Photo Exhibion in Barcis: Caves

of Valcellina: lights in the archivesof the me with photographsfrom USP CAI Photo secon thattells all about the cave.

*2. Travelling Exhibion at shops andbars involving all the inhabitants ofBarcis: My cave: images, drawings,words and emoons of the darkmagic of the Vecchia Diga Cave.

3. Cinema in Barcis showing thecave to everyone who cannot gocaving to share the emoons ofspeleologists.

4. Visit of the cave on July 1st withgeological explanaons, learningand exploraon.

5. At the end, publicaton of a bookGroa Vecchia Diga which bringstogether all the topics that are part ofthis cave and cavers that have visitedthe cave during all these years.

This cave actually is very important,not only for caving in the provinceof Pordenone, but also for naonalcaving as it is an example ofwhy educaon, protecon andenhancement of a cave in the pasthas almost been ruined by aemptsto commercialise caves for thegeneral public (sight-seers).In the future, we should try to developtwin cites programmes with foreigncountries that follow the same philosophyof protecton of caves and caving.

Cee groe savre vraiment trs importante, nonseulement pour la splologie dans la province dePordenone mais aussi au niveau naonal, parce quecest un exemple montrant comment tous les effortsdducaon, de protecon et de mise en valeur dunecavit dans le pass, ont risqu dtre anans par unetentave de la rendre tourisque.Il nest pas exclu dans lavenir de conclure des jumelagesavec des pays trangers qui suivent la mme philosophiede protecon des cavits et de la splologie.

degli speleologi.4. Visita della groa il 1 luglio con spiegazione geologica,didaca e delle esplorazioni fae.

5. Per terminare entro la fine dellanno verr presentatoun libroGroa della Vecchia Diga che raccoglie tugli argomen che fanno parte di questa groa e deglispeleologi che durante tu ques anni hanno visitatoed esplorato la groa stessa.

Questa groa una realt speleologica molto importantenon solo per la speleologia della provincia di Pordenonema anche per la speleologia nazionale perch unesempio di didaca e di protezione e valorizzazione diuna groa che in passato ha rischiato di essere rovinataper un tentavo di turiscizzazione.Non escluso che in futuro verranno fa dei gemellaggicon paesi stranieri che seguono la stessa filosofia diprotezione delle groe e della speleologia.

LISHED A COLLECTION OF THEGROUPS WORK FROM 2006 TO 2011.THIS BOOK DESCRIBES ITS RESEARCH,SURVEYS AND COOPERATION WITHSCIENTIFIC ORGANIZATIONS SUCHAS THE UNIVERSITY OF TRIESTEAND PADOVA.

An event enjoyed by anyonewishing to learn more about theenvironment and the history of our

country took place Saturday, May 5,at 5.30pm, at the Il Caseificio hallin Spilimbergo.Among rocks, wildlife and history,a book containing a series ofcontribuons of various nature,edited by Pradis SpeleologicalGroup, was officially presented.This group conducts research andexploraon acvies since 1966,not only in the homonymous valley,but also in many surrounding townsand other areas of the region. The

group connues their researchacvies and localizaon of cavesas well as the publishing of thetopographies for the inseron inthe regional land registries. Thegroup has collaborated several meswith scienfic bodies, including theUniversies of Trieste and Padova,in order to study of the karst andunderground sites.Moreover, the group organizespopular acvies and training

courses as well as trips with children,especially during the summerholidays.The results of the work and

experiences of recent years havebeen collected in the publicaton,

How did you start diving in caves?I have been a cave diver since 1982,for about 30 years but I started divingin open waters already in 1971 whenI passed the diver cerficaon course.

Even though I started diving into seacaves and short siphons very soonafer receiving my diving cerficate,the real caving and cave divingstarted for me only in 1982. A newsink that appeared overnight in themiddle of the Reka riverbed close tothe kocjan caves was the turning

point in my career. I remember the TVreport about the river disappearingin a mighty waterfall into the newlyemerged abyss. At that me thephenomenon seemed terrifying tome and I said to myself that therewas no money in the world to makeme enter that ugly hole. And whathappened next? The very next day,encouraged by one of the researchinstuons, I was researching theboom of this abyss together withmy two friends. And not for all themoney in the world, but for free! Itwas a great challenge for me at thatme. Today I am aware that my greatcuriosity was a synonym for stupidityand how very lucky we were, whichwe only realized the next day whenwe descended into the cave again.The hall was completely changed andat its boom where we performedmeasurements the day before, therewas a twenty tons rock bulk thatbroke offthe ceiling in the meanme.

From this greenhorn descent onwardsI was immensely aracted to themysteriousness of the underwaterworld, especially the water caves withsiphons, the underwater tunnels thatare inaccessible to the majority ofcavers.

Od stegaprvopristopnikega spusta me jeskrivnostnost podzemlja neverjetnopritegnila, e posebej vodne james sifoni - torej sto, kar je veini

jamarjev nedosegljivo.

You are also a director ofspeleological films.In 1969 I made my earliestunderwater housing for a photocamera and the next year an UWhousing for a film camera. It wasa simple one because I was veryyoung, sll a child but it was thebeginning. I made a few short filmsabout what I saw around me underthe sea and also about diving witha diving pump. You have received importantinternatonal awards.It was long ago (1984) when thefilm won a prize. It was in France

in La Chapell en Vercors at theInternaonal Speleological Fesval.The movie was awarded the specialprize of the Jury for the quality ofunderwater photography. Later on Imade some changes in eding and in1986 I sent this movie to Linz for thenext Internaonal Fesval, Hans HassMedaille. Although it does not

live only in Slovenia, but in the cavesalong the Dinaric karst from Sloveniato Herzegovina, it is historically aSlovenian animal. It was found anddescribed in Slovenia and has hencecarried the glory of our countryworldwide.In 1927, two Slovenian biologistsRoman Kenk and Albin Selikar,built the first speleo laboratory inthe world in the Podpeka cavein Slovenia. Later in 1933 Selikarperformed dive into the cave usinga surface-supplied diving suit. Thisendeavour was also one of theearliest in the world.And much more ... SUMMARYIn 2011, to celebrate their 40th anniversary, the PralpesFribourgeoises Caving Club (SCPF) set out to conquerthe Colombian depths of South America. Following thediscoveries made in 2011 in the El Penon karsc fieldlocated in the state of Santander, a second expedion waslaunched in 2012. Far from tradional prejudices, Colombiareveals a country with a rich human and speleologicalheritage. As proof, we have the warm welcome in the cies

of Medellin and Bucamaranga and on the plateau of ElPenon, as well as the 10 km of galleries discovered in a fewweeks by a team of 7 people. The labyrinthine karst foundat over 2500 m, pastures punctuated by thick forests,tropical mists, imposing vercals where cave-dwelling birdsof prey circle, mysterious rumbling underground rivers,fossil galleries with beauful concreons, the mild climate,the rich food and brandy flowing freely. The pre-Colombiangods have gathered all the necessary ingredients for thecaving adventure of a lifeme in El Penon, the land of theRosablanca limestone.

GEOGRAPHICAL AND GEOLOGICAL SETTINGThe El Penon region (towns of El Penon and Bolivar) islocated in the Santander state in the Eastern Cordilleraof the Andes. The Cretaceous limestone extends overseveral hundred kilometres between Bogota andBucamaranga at altudes between 50 and 3000 m. Manyrivers originate there but the karsc hydrogeologicalsystems have been lile studied at present. The

speleological potenal proves to be important and thetwo expedions to date in this region have only scratchedthe surface. These parcularly steep and wild mountainsare sparsely populated and the few localies found herehave no motorised access. For example, the communityof El Penon is only 50 years old and the access road isonly a few decades old.All the caves of El Penon and surrounding areas arelocated in the Rosablanca formaon (Valanginien-Hauterivien): we are talking about a succession oflimestone and grey dolomites, brown limestone, marl andshale. This structure is sufficiently characterisc to showthe very expressive and developed karst morphology.It can reach 500 m and we can also find veins of quartzfibre. The average dip is about 10 degrees and the cavesexplored lie roughly at an altude between 2686 and1300 m. Currently no karst resurgence has been spoedat the foot of the cliffs but the fact that the highest peaksof the mountain range have not yet been reached andthe karst descends right down to the alluvial plains at analtude of 50 m, points to a speleological potenal ofover 2500 m.

AREA SURVEYS AND EXPLORATIONNine caves were explored and mapped in 2011, totalling

4200 m of development. In 2012, 15 caves were mapped,totalling 4500 m. About ten other important caves (pitsof 100 m and more, areas of large cave entrances) werelocated and parally explored during area surveys. Todate, there are therefore more than 10 km of tunnelsthat were discovered in six weeks by a team of sevenpeople at most.There are predominately two types of caves: shallowpits 50 to 150 m deep, somemes giving access to largerooms and more or less impressive hollow shelters incliffs leading to underground streams. With a depth of 217 m, the Hoye of Neblina is the deepest vercal cave

at present, whereas the Cueva de los Carracos is the cavewith the most important development (1500 m).The two Splo Colombia expedions in 2011 and 2012are the first of this kind to be carried out in Colombia.In other words, this is the first systemac survey andexploraon of the predominantly vercal high altudekarst caves. Afer a few weeks of survey and exploraon,the surface of the karst field has barely been scratched.The dead end sumps, the impenetrable squeezes or cave-ins at depths exceeding 200 m, did not take anythingfrom the pleasure of caving. In fact, these discoverieshave succeeded one another at a franc pace of nearlyone cave per day. Future expedions, in connecon witha beer hydrogeological knowledge of the region andsearch for the access to a larger system, will take us deepinto the depth of the Rosablanca limestone.
