8MARCH2010 Next event on the European Challenge Tour This week on the European Senior Tour After Ian Poulter’s magnificent victory at the last World Golf Championships event, The European Tour’s finest are primed for another attempt to conquer America at the WGC – CA Championship this week. Poulter, who rose to Number Five on the Official World Golf Ranking following his win over fellow Englishman Paul Casey at the WGC – Accenture Match Play last month, will be among the favourites to contend the CA Championship over the famous Blue Monster Course at the Doral Golf & Spa Resort in Miami, Florida, and he will be joined by a hugely talented pack of in-form European Tour Members looking to dethrone defending champion Phil Mickelson. World Number Six Casey, who followed his runner-up finish in Arizona with a fourth place in last week’s PGA Tour event, has momentum on his side, as does the Honda Classic champion Camilo Villegas, a fan of the Blue Monster course having finished in a tie for fifth place last year. Villegas can also count on ‘home’ backing at Doral, with Miami’s huge Latin American community always offering the Colombian their partisan support. Joining that in-form trio from the World’s top 20 are Lee Westwood, who also claimed a top ten berth at Palm Beach Gardens on Sunday, Martin Kaymer, Rory McIlroy, Padraig Harrington, Henrik Stenson, Geoff Ogilvy, Sergio Garcia, Robert Allenby, Retief Goosen and Ernie Els, all of whom will be eyeing the season’s second WGC title on American soil. Only two players from the world’s top 50 will be missing at Doral: Tiger Woods and Japanese sensation Ryo Ishikawa, who will be graduating from his high school, Suginami Gakuin, in Japan next week. Other qualification categories in addition to the top 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking include the top 20 players from the final 2009 Race to Dubai standings, the top 30 from the final 2009 FedExCup standings, the top two from the Order of Merits of the Japan Tour, Asian Tour, Australasian Tour and Sunshine Tour, as well the current top ten in The Race to Dubai. While many players will have a long journey to Miami, The European Tour Members flying in from the Maybank Malaysian Open will surely be making the longest trips. The two Sørens – Hansen and Kjeldsen – along with Thongchai Jaidee will circumnavigate the globe after four gruelling rounds in the punishing Malaysian heat. All three players will be full of confidence after performing well in Kuala Lumpur, with Hansen taking third spot behind the Korean duo of Noh Seung-yul and KJ Choi. “It is a long trip to Miami from here,” smiled Hansen before embarking on a 14 hour flight to London, where he would have a four-hour stopover before boarding the eight hour flight to Miami. “But it has been a great week in Malaysia and I am glad I came here because I got into contention and really enjoyed it. After Ian Poulter’s magnificent victory at the last World Golf Championships event, The European Tour’s finest are primed for another attempt to conquer America at the WGC – CA Championship this week.

World Number Six Casey, who followed his runner-up finish in Arizona with a fourth place in last week’s PGA Tour event, has momentum on his side, as does the Honda Classic champion Camilo Villegas, a fan of the Blue Monster course having finished

in a tie for fifth place last year.

Only two players from the world’s top 50 will be missing at

Doral: Tiger Woods and Japanese sensation Ryo Ishikawa, who will be graduating from his high school, Suginami Gakuin, in Japan next week.

While many players will have a long journey to Miami, The European Tour Members flying

in from the Maybank Malaysian Open will surely be making the longest trips.

I can take a lot of confidence to Doral now and it is a venue that I have played well at in the past.”

• Defending champion Phil Mickelson will attempt to become only the second player to successfully defend the WGC – CA Championship. He would join Tiger Woods (2002-03, 05-07). Mickelson’s one stroke victory over Nick Watney in 2009 was his first victory in a World Golf Championship event in his 27th WGC appearance. He did not have to wait too long for his second WGC triumph, which came at the 2009 WGC – HSBC Champions.

• Following his victory in the WGC – Accenture Match Play, Ian Poulter will attempt to join Tiger Woods as the only players to win consecutive WGC events.

• In 2007 Tiger Woods created European Tour history by becoming the first player to win the same European Tour International Schedule event on six occasions. The winning years were: 1999, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2007. He matched this feat later in the 2007 season by winning the WGC – Bridgestone Invitational for a record-equalling sixth time also.

STROKE AVERAGE

STROKE AVERAGEDefined as the average number of strokes taken per round on The European Tour International Schedule.

DRIVING ACCURACYDefined as both an average number of fairways per round and a percentage of fairways hit.

DRIVING DISTANCEDefined as an average number of yards per drive. Two drives are measured per round on holes chosen to counteract the effect of gradient or wind. The drives are measured at the point they come to rest regardless of whether they are on the fairway or not.

GREENS IN REGULATIONDefined as both an average number of greens per round and a percentage of greens hit. A green in regulation is defined as the number of shots that a player should take to reach the putting surface on any given hole, being one for Par 3s, two for Par 4s and three for Par 5s.

PUTTS PER GIRDefined as both the average number of putts taken per green in regulation and the average number of putts taken per round on greens that are hit in regulation. By doubling the greens per round figure and thereby assuming two putts on each green in regulation, we can then subtract the GIR putts per round figure from this total to infer the number of strokes under par the player will be per round from the greens hit in regulation.

AVERAGE PUTTSDefined as the average number of putts taken per round. The use of the putter from off the green does not constitute a putt as far as the statistics are concerned. KEYAVE SPR - Average scrambles per roundAVE Missed GPR - Average missed greens per round

SCRAMBLESThe frequency, expressed as a percentage to one decimal place, of the player scoring par or better on holes where the player missed the Green in Regulation.

Sam Torrance

The European Senior Tour’s Far East foray continues this week when the Chang Thailand Senior Masters presented by ISPS makes its debut on the 2010 schedule with Scotland’s Sam Torrance looking to continue his fine start to the season.

Torrance, the 2009 Order of Merit winner, has made a strong start to his defence of the John Jacobs Trophy, finishing tied third in the 2010 season opening event in Mauritius and tied fifth last week in The Aberdeen Brunei Senior Masters presented by The Stapleford Forum.

He will head to the Royal Gems Golf Club in Nakhonpathom, Thailand, full of confidence following a superb final round 65 in Brunei.

That helped the 2002 Ryder Cup Captain move up to second in the Order of Merit behind current leader Kevin Spurgeon, who captured his maiden victory in Mauritius.

Joining Spurgeon and Torrance in the field will be the 2006 Ryder Cup Captain Ian Woosnam, who finished in a share of 17th in Brunei on his first appearance of the new season.

The Welshman was runner-up to Torrance in the 2009 Order of Merit and will be looking to recapture the form that yielded the PGA Handa Cup Philanthropy Senior Tournament in Japan at the end of last year.

Fellow former Masters Tournament winner Sandy Lyle will be looking for an improvement on his tied 37th finish in Brunei as he continues his search for a first Senior Tour title.

That will also be the goal of South African Chris Williams and Englishman Roger Chapman, who finished third and fourth respectively in Brunei.

Thailand’s Boonchu Ruangkit will lead the home challenge following his superb play-off victory last week in The Aberdeen Brunei Senior Masters presented by The Stapleford Forum.

Ruangkit defeated Frankie Minoza of the Philippines on the second extra hole after the pair tied on 14 under par 199 at the Empire Hotel & Country Club to become the first player to win on his Senior Tour debut since Michael Allen in the 2009 US Senior PGA Championship.

The Chang Thailand Senior Masters presented by ISPS, which has a prize fund of US$400,000, continues the Senior Tour’s relationship with promoters WSM Sponsorship, which also backed last week’s event in Brunei.

It is the Senior Tour’s first visit to Thailand and Royal Gems Golf Club, which is known as “The Crown Jewel” of Thailand’s golf courses and is commonly recognised as one of the best courses in South East Asia.

* Kaymer captures European Tour Shot of the MonthMartin Kaymer’s coolness under pressure at the 72nd hole of the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship has earned the talented young German the first European Tour Shot of the Month Award for 2010.

Kaymer was tied with England’s Ian Poulter playing the par five final hole at Abu Dhabi Golf Club, but the 25 year old produced a brilliant 276 yard three wood second shot which just caught the right side of the 18th green. Two putts for a birdie four secured Kaymer’s second Abu Dhabi title in the space of three years by the slimmest of margins.

Second place went to Spaniard Alvaro Quiros and Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy was third.

* Poulter wins Golfer of the Month Award for FebruaryEnglishman Ian Poulter was named The European Tour’s Golfer of the Month for February after claiming his first World Golf Championships title in the WGC-Accenture Match Play at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Dove Mountain, Marana, Arizona.

Poulter’s 4 and 2 win over compatriot Paul Casey in the event’s first all European final, was also his first victory on America soil and took him to a career high of fifth in the Official World Golf Ranking. It is the first time the 34 year old Ryder Cup player has won The European Tour’s Golfer of the Month award and he receives a jeroboam of Moët & Chandon champagne and an engraved alms dish in recognition of his achievement.

* Els to receive GWAA Bartlett Award

Three-time Major Champion Ernie Els, whose commitment to charitable giving began in 1999 and is embodied in his youth foundation South Africa, the Els for Austim Foundation and the Els Centre for Excellence, has been honoured with the Golf Writers Association of America’s Charlie Bartlett Award. Forty year old Els has been a passionate advocate for autism since his son Ben, now seven, was diagnosed four years ago. He and wife Liezl founded the Els Autism Foundation in 2009 and are now undertaking a capital campaign to raise $30 million for the Centre for Excellence.

* Yang and Stenson to star at Volvo China Open

Asia’s first Major champion, YE Yang, and henrik Stenson will be among the star names at the US$2.5 million Volvo China Open at Suzhou Jinji Lake International Golf Club from April 15-18.

Yang turned world golf on its head late last year when he overhauled Tiger Woods to become the first Asian golfer to win a Major at the USPGA Championship at Hazeltine, and now the 38 year old Korean is looking to add the Volvo China Open to the eight titles he has won worldwide.

“I always enjoy playing golf in China and have great memories of my breakthrough victory at the HSBC Champions in Shanghai in 2007 and I am honoured to be able to play in the national open golf championship of China, the Volvo China Open at Jinji Lake GC in Suzhou,” said Yang.

Stapleford Park, the English sporting country estate, will host the European Senior Tour for the first time when the inaugural handa Senior Masters presented by The Stapleford Forum takes place there from 12-14 May 2010.

With a prize fund of £400,000, it will be one of the largest on the 2010 Senior Tour schedule and as a result is likely to have a significant impact on the outcome of the Senior Tour Order of Merit, won last year by Sam Torrance.

Torrance, the 2002 Ryder Cup winning Captain is also a former Captain at Stapleford Park, and has described the venue near Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire as ‘one of England’s greatest jewels’.

* Victory for Villegas in MiamiColombian Camilo Villegas landed the honda Classic title at Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, after holding off a European challenge led by Justin Rose.

Rose shot a sparkling six under par 64 in his final round to jump to third place on seven under par for the tournament, and fellow Englishman Paul Casey finished a shot behind in a share of fourth place with Fiji’s Vijay Singh.

However Villegas was not prepared to let his hard-earned lead slip away and he won by five shots from second-placed American Anthony Kim, landing his third US PGA Tour title and a million-dollar pay day.
