The number of visits to the ETS website has grown from about 3.900 in 2008 to 79.000 in 2011! 2011 results: 78.927 visits, or 6.570 visits per month, but 12.500 since September! 5 2010 33004 16927 1410 Slide 6 www.europeantissue.com Why the number of visits has increased by a factor of 5 during 2011, in comparison to 2010, when it had doubled already vs. 2009? 6 Three are the key reasons of the big visits increase during 2011: 1.The creation of pages in German, French, Italian, Spanish and the relative AdWords. (before the website was just in English. Now a single Italian page ligiene nel lavare le mani has achieved 14.400 visits and a French one Comment se laver et se scher les mains Recommandations de lOrganisation mondiale de la Sant (OMS WHO) has been visited 13.500 times) 2.Advertising on major Category Magazines, with the indication of our homepage 3.The creation of a 2011 Cartoon Contest page and the relative AdWords investment (25.000 visits in 4 months!) Hygiene is also a very important factor in health. For example if you look at the last cholera outbreak in Chile, it was traced back to and spread by dirty dish cloth. That is a fact. So perhaps paper kitchen towels would have been useful in avoiding this. Hans Rosling GAPMINDER HEALTHaroundtheworld Professor Hans Rosling, of Global Health at Karolinska Medical University in Sweden (the institution responsible for deciding the Nobel Prize in medicine) is the creator of GAPMINDER, (http://www.gapminder.org/videos), a program which provides very useful data, presented in a exciting, dynamic way, about HEALTH around the world.http://www.gapminder.org/videos In an interview released in 2009*, he has declared: * Perini Journal, Issue #33 Slide 10 www.europeantissue.com How Tissue products contribute to improved life quality and health (2) 10 USE of TISSUEHomeAway From Home improved life quality hygieneconditions The USE of TISSUE, both at Home and Away From Home, is an important element of improved life quality and hygiene conditions better health Lower hygiene risks contribute to better health. uniquepropertiesTissueproductssuperiorhygieneabsorbency disposabilityeasydispensing The unique properties of Tissue products (superior hygiene, absorbency, disposability, easy dispensing) provide the Users with superior performance and safety. highperformancefewer The high performance of the recent Tissue products also means that fewer are needed: reduced consumption saves resources and the environment. renewableresources wellbeing modernlife-style healthconditions Tissue is a forest based business which uses renewable resources, improves the well-being of the Society, which not only is an essential ingredient of modern life-style, but contributes to improve people health conditions everyday, everywhere. About Hands Drying the Guide Provides the following indications: - air dryers or roller towels should not be used in food preparation rooms as their installation may induce contamination (risk of germ dissemination through air movements for air dryers for instance), paper towels are recommended. Indications on Hands Washing and Drying included in the document "Guidelines on HACCP, GMP and GHP for ASEAN Food SMEs. This programme funded by the European Commission was implemented by the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN). The device devoted to hand drying must be of single use (paper towels being practically the only possible solution). The indication provided is the following: The device devoted to hand drying must be of single use (paper towels being practically the only possible solution). Both complete documents can be found in the ETS website. Slide 25 www.europeantissue.com Well, we have seen the benefits of Paper Products and we have seen that they are supported by the most reputable Health Authorities in the world 25 but are Tissue Paper Products really sustainable? There are around a number of prejudices about paper isnt it true that you must cut trees in order to produce Paper products? and what about Paper sustainibility? You may start by having a look to this short Danish animation about wood properties and merits. Slide 26 www.europeantissue.com Lets examine some of the myths about Paper: 1) The paper industry destroys forests 26 The paper industry destroys forests The mythThe reality keep up forests The paper industry contributes to keep up forests. sustainable The paper industry practices sustainable forest management. not responsible The paper industry is not responsible for the depletion of tropical forests. Comments: 11% Around 11% of the timber felled throughout the world is used to make paper (FAO 2007) forestgrowth The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reckons that there is an annual forest growth of 0,5 per cent in the Northern Hemisphere, equivalent in Europe alone to the area of 1.4 million football pitches. Deforestation Deforestation is generally occurring in the southern hemisphere and is mainly due to conversion of forests into agricultural land and for fuel wood collection* *(FAO Global Forest Resource Assessment 2010) Slide 27 www.europeantissue.com 27 The utilization of Paper products should be minimized sustainable Paper supports sustainable consumption. renewable Paper is made from renewable raw materials. Recycling Recycling spares resources. The mythThe reality Comments: hygiene renewable material: wood We need paper for our daily hygiene. Unlike other materials, paper is made from a renewable material: wood. Sustainable forest management will ensure that forests grow and enough material is available. doing more with less The paper industrys motto is doing more with less: making paper with fewer materials, less energy increasingly renewable, in more efficient machines, towards zero waste, and providing needed products. As much as 72% of paper in use is collected for recycling. More concretely, nine out of ten corrugated boxes are made from recycled fibre; and nine out of ten newspapers are made with recovered paper. Lets examine some of the myths about Paper: 2) The utilization of Paper products should be minimized Slide 28 www.europeantissue.com 28 The mythThe reality sustainable Paper is one of the few sustainable products. reduced impact The paper industry has reduced its envir onmental impact greatly over the last 10 years. storeCO2 Paper products store CO2. Paper production is bad for the environment Comments: naturalbiodegradablerecyclable renewable sustainable Paper boasts exceptional environmental credentials: its natural, biodegradable, recyclable, comes from an infinitely renewable resource and is produced in a sustainable manner. treescapturestorebillionstonnescarbon storedproductsmadewood paper recycling Through natures own process the photosynthesis trees capture and store billions of tonnes of carbon, day after day. The carbon sequestered in forests is subsequently stored in products made of wood, such as paper, and the carbon storage is further prolonged by recycling paper. environmentalimpactsdecreased While paper production has increased steadily in the last 10 years, environmental impacts have decreased. All paper should be recycled Comments: mostrecycled 72% has increased 30% Paper is the most recycled material in Europe and more than half of the paper produced comes from recycling. In Europe, 72% of paper is collected for recycling. Recycling rate has increased 30% in the last 20 years recyclingrise greenenergy foureight Year after year paper recycling rates continue to rise and when fibres can no longer be used they can be converted into renewable or green energy. It is estimated that it can be reused four to eight times on average. bestbyvirginfibre Some paper grades, due to their end use, need to offer characteristics that can best be provided by virgin fibre. Lets examine some of the myths about Paper: 4) All paper should be recycled Slide 30 www.europeantissue.com 30 The mythThe reality reducedenergy The paper industry has considerably reduced its energy requirement. 54% bio-energy 54% of the energy used by the European paper industry is bio-energy. Paper production uses too much energy Comments: Energy Energy is required for all industrial production. Of course also the paper industry requires energy to operate its machines and to dry the paper web. About half of the energy used in the European paper industry already comes today from renewable energy sources and the Industry is committed to bring it to 56% soon. 200kgpaper Tissue15KgTissueinayear equivalent stand-byin a month Around 500 kWh of energy are required to make 200 kg of paper, which is about the annual per capita consumption in Europe. Tissue is about 15Kg. Energy used for Tissue in a year is equivalent to the energy consumed by a typical household leaving its electronic equipment on stand-by in a month! Lets examine some of the myths about Paper: 5) Paper production uses too much energy Slide 31 www.europeantissue.com 31 The mythThe reality Paper production is bad for the climate EuropeanCouncil climatefriendly The European Council has recognized wood products as climate friendly. reducedcarbondioxide The paper industry has reduced its carbon dioxide emissions. Sustainableforestmanagementreduce Sustainable forest management helps reduce worldwide carbon dioxide emissions Comments: trees carbonstore Youngtreesefficient The main source of raw material for paper - trees is a vast carbon store and the prime absorber of CO2 from the atmosphere. Young trees are much more efficient at absorbing carbon than old forests. Maturetreesslower younghealthyforests Mature trees absorb carbon slower the older they get. To maximize the carbon storage we need young healthy forests where trees are regularly harvested and re-grown. 15 Kg of Tissue yearly are equivalent to 75 Km Paper also continues to store carbon throughout its lifetime. Still, around 160 kg of CO2 are emitted during the production of 200kg of paper, equivalent to the amount emitted by a typical car over 1,000 km. 15 Kg of Tissue yearly are equivalent to 75 Km. 1 Year of Tissue ( 15 KG) 75 Km by car Lets examine some of the myths about Paper: 6) Paper production is bad for the climate Slide 32 www.europeantissue.com 32 The role of Cartoons in ETS Hygiene communication the Specialists (like WHO), ignoredPublicOpinion Though they are known by the Specialists (like WHO), the results of these studies are essentially ignored by the Public Opinion. And yet the high cost of Mass Media is prohibitive for an Association like ETS The objective superior hygienic performances The objective of Cartoons and Illustrations is to synthetically portray the superior hygienic performances of Paper Products in comparison to Warm Air Dryers (WAD) and Jet Air Dryers ( JAD) Young generations ignore Young generations in particular ignore almost completely the benefits of paper Towels, which deliver a superior hygiene for hands drying Westminster University fairsCategory Magazines Up to now the ETS supported Hygiene studies have been presented in Press Conferences in the Westminster University, Hygiene and Cleaning fairs (ISSA, Tissue World), Advertising and PR on Category Magazines. modernyoung ETS Website European Cleaning Magazines The modern and young messages of last years winners are currently used in the ETS Website and in a number of European Cleaning Magazines (like GSA (Giornale Servizi Ambientali), Pulizia Industriale, and will appear shortly on Tomorrow Cleaning and ECJ ( European Cleaning Journal).
