cologne – the Rhine MetRopolis
the congress venue gürzenich is a pretentious medieval festival hall, originally dating from the 15th century. it was named after its first owner family, and is located in the today’s historic city centre of cologne, germany.
the so-called rhine metropolis is a multifaceted major city with a population of more than one million, with a 2,000 years-old history.
the 800 years old cologne cathedral (Kölner dom) is probably the most fa-mous landmark of the city. With its spire of 157 m height, the gothic cathedral is the third-tallest church building in the world, and has already been registered as World heritage site.
In 1930, the german subsidiary of the us ford Motor company moved to cologne, where nowadays the company‘s euro-pean headquarter is situated. In the year of construction commencement, henry ford himself arrived to attend the founda-tion stone ceremony. as another claim to fame, close to the railway station “Messe/deutz”, visitors may behold the otto en-gine (1876) monument, when leaving the building via otto square (ottoplatz).
however, not only the automotive indus-try, but also several other large business groups have settled in the rhine metropo-lis, including chemical industry as a leading sector in the region.
thanks to public research institutions, such as the german aerospace centre and advanced research into biotechnolo-gy, cologne has a top position in science and research. the rhine metropolis pro-
Dear madame or Sir, Dear Colleagues,
nowadays, sustainability, especially in the field of the coatings industry, is of great relevance, including keywords like e.g. durability, low-emission, resource-conserving, or even smart. these and other special properties have become the basic requirements of modern coatings and paints during the last decade.
We are very proud to invite you to our etcc 2014 as one the most important european congresses for coatings science and industry. You will profit from our two-pillar structure of this congress to the motto of
“New Functions and Sustainability – Drivers for Future Coatings”.
on the one hand, industrial partners will benefit from the presentation of the latest trends, technologies and innovative products. on the other hand, poster sessions and the scientific programme provide to broaden the spectrum of knowledge on a high level, and also give an opportunity to compare ideas and to discuss old and new questions. at the etcc you will find both – experts from industry and versed scientists at the same time.
the etcc will take place in cologne, representing a famous trade hub as well as a charm-ing historic city, with many cultural facets.
We are very much looking forward to meet you there!

vides the linkage of pharmaceutical and chemical industry within the so-called “cologne chemical industry belt”.
apart from business, cologne is known for a very popular cultural event, which regularly at-tracts visitors from the whole world. the annual exceptional celebrations of carnival (“Kölner Karneval”) temporarily transform the city centre into a vivid hot-spot, cheerfully according to the slogan “Kölle alaaf” (long live cologne).
a visit of cologne should also include the seasonally independent taste of a local speciality: the “Kölsch” beer, with over 1,000 years of brewing tradition. conveniently, the city has a large diversity of traditional brewhouses, inviting to gain an insight into their authentic at-mosphere.

the division’s tasks are:
• to actively support science and research in the field of coatings and pigments as well as their respective raw materials, products and technologies. this support should help to maintain the global competitiveness of the members.
• to improve the knowledge of chemists and technicians in the industry of coatings and pig-ments by the yearly organized coatings congress, dealing with actual and important topics of the industry, and by regional meetings e.g. in leverkusen and in stuttgart on selected topics as well as by coorganizing the european congress of fatipec.
• to provide expertise in technical and political questions of the european legislation.
the steering-board member of the section “lackchemie”, prof. dr. thomas brock is the esc-chairman (european scientific committee) at etcc 2014.
Vilf: VeRband deR ingenieuRe des lacK- und faRbenfachs e.V.
the VIlf association of coating engineers was founded in 1955. In the early days, the members were graduated engineers coming from the main german paint engineers’ schools, who were not represented by the relatively restricted german chemists association. still today, most
of the members are paint engineers, but also many chemists, paint technicians and even commercial employees have joined the VIlf. In accordance with the statutes, the main goal is to improve the technical knowledge of the members by various measures. nowadays, more than 70 companies support the association as company members, and more than 800 employees of the german paint and coatings industry, raw material suppliers, universi-ties and institutes are represented by the VIlf. Mr ludger Küper is the president of the VIlf association.
occa: the oil & colouR cheMists’ association
occa, a registered educational charity within the uK, is a members’ organization for technical professionals from laboratory, production, managerial, commercial, consultancy, service providers and educational roles across a spectrum of allied and associated industry sectors. head-quartered in the uK, occa is an international society and active across the world. divisions, sections and branches exist in north america, af-
rica, asia and europe with membership covering many countries. regional technical pro-grammes and conferences are run on a local basis and occa manages itself through a series of committees at the higher, regional and local level for divisions and sections. Mem-bers work together devising and developing local programmes through to major events, contribute to the management and running of the organization, ensuring it provides benefits to both membership and industry by networking, interaction and creativity. the current president of the occa is Mr Keith dobell, followed by Mr. Jim bury mid of 2014.
fatipec
the federation of associations of technicians for Industry of paints in european countries “fatIpec” is a non-profit organization, creat-ed in 1950 and nowadays consisting of twelve member associations representing: belgium,
czech republic, france, germany (two associations), greece, hungary, Italy, poland, russia, switzerland, and the netherlands. the members of these associations are personal members as well as coatings or raw material manufacturers, universities, institutes or research centres. fatIpec is a member of the global organization coatings societies International (csI).
fatIpec’s activities are focused on all kinds of organic coatings and other paint-related materials including:
• stimulation and dissemination of the scientific and technological knowledge concerning production, formulations, application, research and development
• exchange of ideas and expertise
• International and worldwide cooperation between scientists and technicians, universi-ties, institutes or research centres
the coating science and technology expert Jozef Koziel is the president of fatIpec.
pResident of etcc 2014
since January 2012, dr. hilt is president of the “gdch fachgruppe lackchemie”, fatIpec board member, and also president of this year’s etcc 2014. besides, dr. hilt is senior Manager coating systems and painting technology in fraunhofer Ipa and general Manager of the research society for pigments and coatings, stuttgart, fpl e.V.
fachgRuppe lacKcheMie and gdch
the gdch “gesellschaft deutscher chemiker” (society of german chem-ists) is an association of people interested in chemistry and supports them in a responsive and sustainable fashion, as a non-profit organization. the broad-ranging dedication of gdch includes the integration of chemistry in the society, as well as the publishing of renowned professional journals. the division “lackchemie” (paint chemistry) is one of around 30 profes-
sional sections governed by the gdch as an umbrella association. founded in 1947, the professionals group is focused on coatings, coatings raw materials and the relevant pro-duction processes and technologies.
