WelcomeWelcome to Coimbra, Portugal, for the 14th European Mediterranean & Middle Eastern Conference on

Information Systems.

This edition is hosted by the University of Coimbra, one of the oldest in the world, dating back to 1290, and organised in association with the University of Lisbon.

We are very excited to have researchers from 32 countries in attendance. One of our goals during the preparation of EMCIS 2017 was to make the conference even more relevant in the current academic context, which is why, for the irst time, the proceedings are published by Springer. The acceptance rate was 35% for papers, plus another 15% for short papers.

Preparing an event like this requires lots of support. This is why the co-chairs would like to acknowledge the sponsorship of the University of Coimbra, namely of its Faculty of Science and Technology and of the Department of Informatics Engineering. We would also like to thank the keynote speaker, the track chairs, the reviewers, our sponsors and the volunteers for their help.

We hope you enjoy your stay in Coimbra for attending EMCIS!

Keynote SpeakerJosé Tribolet is Full Professor of Information Systems at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (DEI) and at the Department of Engineering and Management (DEG) (Joint Appointment) at the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Technical University of Lisbon, Portugal. He is senior researcher at the Information Systems Group at INESC-ID and promoter of the Centre for Organizational Design & Engineering at INESC-INOV. He is the coordinator of POSI-E3, the Professional Post-Graduate course in Information Systems and Enterprise Engineering of IST (3rd Degree Bologna Diploma). He serves presently as Chairman of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (DEI/IST).

His main academic interests are in the areas of Enterprise Architecture, Enterprise Engineering and Enterprise Governance, with emphasis on IS Architecture, Business Process Engineering, Enterprise Transformation and Change Management. Since 2000 he has completed with success the supervision of nine Ph.D. students in Enterprise Engineering. He presently supervises 3 Ph.D. candidates, all of which are enterprise professionals.

Dr. Tribolet holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from MIT (1977). He was a member of the research staff of Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill, NJ, from 1977 through 1979. He spent a full sabbatical year (1997-98) at MIT´s Sloan School of Management. He was a guest professor at IWI – the Institute for Information Management of the University of St. Gallen, in Switzerland, during the spring term of 2012.

He founded, in 1980, the irst non-state owned research institute in Portugal, INESC – Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering. INESC is today a holding of six research institutes nationwide, three of them having become formal Associated Laboratories of the Portuguese Science System. Dr. Tribolet is the President of INESC. He has been Chairman of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Chairman and Vice-President for Post- Graduate Studies of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering of IST. Keynote SpeechORGANIZATIONAL IDENTITY AND SELF-AWARENESS

CREATING CONVERGENCE BETWEEN ENTERPRISE ENGINEERING AND ORGANIZATIONAL DESIGN

By José M. Tribolet

The theme of “convergence” or “integration” between artefacts that most people would call organizational (e.g. mission statements, organizational charts or operating procedures) and artefacts which derive from information technology (e.g. information architectures, process models or management control software) is central to the discipline of information systems, both in its organizational studies lavours, as well as in its computer science lavours.

During the last decade we* have been actively working to progressively narrow of the gap between these two disciplinary areas of organization studies and computer science, both understood is the broadest possible sense, so that such artefacts can be viewed, interpreted and used by all involved in an objective and integrated way, with the aim to provide better means to design, operate and transform organizations.

We believe that the concepts of Organizational Identity and Organizational Self Awareness play a key role in bridging the gap between these two disciplinary areas, which still mainly work back to back, without a credible and rigorous framework adequate for sustained integration of their immense knowledge basis.

In this talk we will attempt to explain the reasons behind our belief, and hope to motivate the research communities of both disciplinary areas to work together towards such integration goal.

*This talk is based on work done by the speaker in collaboration with Rodrigo Magalhães and Marielba Silva.
