HistoryA look back at Briggs & Stratton’s over 100 years in business clearly depicts a company continuously striving for innovation and dedicated to increasing success. Beginning in 1908, the founders of the company, the inventor Stephen F. Briggs and the investor Harold M. Stratton laid a foundation for the future based on their unrelenting vision of innumerable possibilities for Briggs & Stratton Corporation.

The company first ventured into the automobile manufacturing business and from there it progressed into producing automobile parts such as locks, switches, igniters.

In 1919 Briggs & Stratton acquired and took over production of the A.O. Smith Motor Wheel, a product used as a power source for bicycles and the Flyer, a four wheel motorized vehicle. It also led to the development of the type ’P’ engine, a step which revolutionized the 4-cycle gasoline engine industry and set the course for Briggs & Stratton to become the world’s largest manufacturer of air-cooled gasoline engines.

Briggs & Stratton was now providing power for people in every aspect of life and developed several new models in the 1930s.

In 1953 Briggs & Stratton revolutionized the Lawn and Garden Industry by developing the first lightweight aluminum engine. By 1958 the aluminum engine accounted for 80% of engines shipped.

Since then, Briggs & Stratton became a large and successful company. Most recent innovations include the ReadyStart® Starting system, DOV® technology and the new line of 800 Series engines.

E-SERIES™ InitiativeThe New E-SERIES™ Initiative places reduced exhaust emissions at the heart of all engines performance. Our commitment is to surpass the European Exhaust Emissions standards by at least 25%*.

The New E-SERIES™ Initiative is not just about emissions, it is also about an evolution in overall standards that will widen choice and enhance the end user experience. The founding principles of power, reliability and durability remain core to the Briggs & Stratton value proposition. In addition the New E-SERIES™ Initiative ensures that these principles further evolve to include easier starting, improved performance and an enhanced customer experience.

Between now and the end of 2014 all Briggs & Stratton® small vertical shaft engines will perform to the new E-SERIES™ standards.

The EX-SERIES™ engines include all the performance attributes of the E-SERIES™

engines but deliver more. In addition to reduced emissions, outstanding performance and reliability the EX-SERIES™ offer maximum power together with the innovative ReadyStart® starting system. The EX-SERIES™ offers the ultimate power solution for those consumers looking for the best performance package.

In addition to the reduced exhaust emissions and innovative ReadyStart®

starting system, the EX-SERIES™ engines featuring ECO PLUS™ Emission Reducing Technology also significantly reduce the evaporative fuel emissions when the equipment is not in use. By reducing the evaporative emissions, the EX-SERIES ECO PLUS™ engines provide the ideal performance package for the environmentally conscious consumer.

Overhead Valve TechnologyOverhead Valve Technology is the core technology used in a number of E-SERIES™ engines. By combining Overhead Valve Technology with world class machining and manufacturing processes gained over 100 years, results in a highly efficient engine delivering optimal power with lower emissions per cc.

DOV® TechnologyThe patented Direct Overhead Valve (DOV®) engine delivers breakthrough performance driven by technology that makes a difference you can see, feel and hear. The DOV® delivers more torque, improved sound quality and less noise and vibration than any other engine in its class.

Lo-Tone™ and Super Lo-Tone™ MufflerBriggs & Stratton continually strive to deliver engines with exceptional sound and tonal quality. With the Lo-Tone™ and Super Lo-Tone™ muffler systems you are assured of excellent sound and tonal performance.

Mechanical GovernorAdvanced mechanical governing systems are a standard feature on the E-SERIES™ engine range. The governing system allows for better engine speed and performance under variable load conditions. Whether it be damp or long grass which is cut, the mechanical governor will ensure the engine speed is maintained and ultimately delivers the right power all the time.

The ReadyStart® System sets the standard for easy starting. The innovative break through starting system eliminates the need to manually prime or choke the engine before starting. ReadyStart® is available on selected models.

The Briggs & Stratton S2 Start Guarantee® offers you and your customers peace of mind that our engines will start within two pulls every time guaranteed. Our continual

TransportGuard™

With a single flip of a switch - turn off the engine and the fuel.

The innovative TransportGuard™ system introduced in 2010 is exclusive to the new Vanguard™ 5.5 - 10 Gross HP* single cylinder engines, ensuring trouble free equipment transportation.

By simply moving the switch, the ignition and fuel are turned off and the engine is protected against fuel flowing into the crankcase during equipment transportation. Eliminating fouled plugs, hydraulic lock and oil dilution, the TransportGuard™ system ensures reduced equipment downtime and lower maintenance costs.

ECO PLUS™

Briggs & Stratton has a long-standing commitment to protect the environment. Driven by this commitment was the introduction of the E-SERIES™ engine range with exhaust emissions 25% below current European exhaust emissions standards. The ECO PLUS™ range goes one step further, in addition to reducing exhaust emissions, it also reduces evaporative emissions. Evaporative emissions occur when an engine is not in use. During equipment storage, whether it be a lawnmower, tiller, or generator, the fuel in the tank evaporates and the hydrocarbons together with nitrogen-oxides pollute the air resulting in increased petrol emissions. ECO PLUS™ significantly reduces these evaporative emissions and as a result lessens the petrol odour in your storage area.

Production ProcessesNot only is Briggs & Stratton building engines which are producing less emissions, we are also continuously improving our production processes and aim to protect limited resources.

That’s why we are using over 45 M kg of recycled aluminum in our engines annually and also recycled cast iron and steel. We recycle nearly 1 M litres of oil every year.

In addition the emissions generated by the engine painting process have been reduced by 85% since 1990.

Engine EmissionsBriggs & Stratton has a long-standing commitment to protect the environment and through continuous R&D investments in advanced technology, has reduced the emissions produced by its engines by up to 75% since 1995.

With the introduction of ECO PLUS™ emissions reducing engines in 2009, it further demonstrates Briggs & Stratton’s commitment to reduce engine emissions.

Evaporative emissions happen in two ways:

Permeation Permeation emissions are the result of reactive organic gas molecules penetrating through the walls of the fuel system components, e.g. fuel tank walls, fuel lines, gaskets and seals.

Venting Venting emissions are the result of fuel evaporating. The fuel evaporation will exit the fuel system by way of venting.
