• JRC will perform a second field trial that will compared current approaches in chemical water monitoring. The event is planned to be performed in the Danube river basin: PAHs, PBDE and chlorinated pesticides will be the target compounds. The final report of CMA on-site 1 exercise is available on Circa.

• A draft outline of the sediment/biota guidance has been launched the 8th of February in the light of article 16 of WFD and of the new directive proposal in which is foreseen that MS may opt to apply EQS for sediment and biota.A drafting group has been formed. A preliminary draft will be discussed at the Plenary meeting the 14° of May.The finalisation has been planned for spring 2009.

•The QA/QC Directive has undergone an interservice consultation in March 2008, resulting in comments formulated by the Legal Service which were integrated. A final draft has been communicated to the CMA expert group and to the WFD Committee on the 24 April 2008. The voting is expected to take place on the 15th May 2008.

• A strategy for operational development for quality assurance and control that will cover surface and groundwater in close connection with the EAQC-WISE project is being finalised. The strategy will be presented and discussed at the final workshop of the project that will be held in Bruxelles on 17-18 June. The aim of the “blueprint”document is to establish recommendations concerning QA/QC coordination within the EU concerning chemical monitoring programmes under the WFD.

Work in progress

• Establishment of list(s) of ISO and EN standards relevant to WFD chemical monitoring of priority substances elaborated by DG/Env and the Working Group 1 of CEN/TC-230. Now available on circa.

• The mandate to CEN has been formally communicated by DG ENTR to CEN, which has now three months to come forward with the work programme describing the standard development for the selected chemical and biological methods. Once this work programme will be accepted, the R&D will have to be carried out in 24 months and 12 further months will be needed for the method interlaboratory trials (delivery of new standards expected by spring 2011).
