The project The dataset

GoalECA&D offers science-based operational services for assessing observed changes in climate extremes in Europe. These services rely on high-quality observational data sets provided by the participants.

Participants56 National Meteorological and Hydrological Services, observatories and universities from Europe and the Mediterranean.

CoordinationRoyal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI).

DriversECA&D was initiated by the European Climate Support Network of GIE-EUMETNET and has been designated as Regional Climate Centre on climate data for WMO Region VI (Europe). ECA&D has been further developed in the EU-projects ENSEMBLES, MILLENNIUM and EURO4M.

ECA&D services comprise:• data gathering (long-term high quality daily observational

series from the meteorological stations)• archiving (conversion to standardized formats and storage

in a centralized relational database system)• quality control (fixed procedures to check the data and

attach quality and homogeneity flags)• analysis (calculation of indices for in particular climate

extremes, according to internationally agreed algorithms)• capacity development (training workshops, seminars

and individual support)• dissemination of web-based products

ECA&D products include:• daily data set built up from 25269 quality controlled series

of 12 essential climate variables (including temperature and precipitation) observed at 4641 meteorological stations in 62 countries (46% publicly available), monthly updated

• meta information on station history and time series homogeneity• maps and plots for changes in extremes in the form of trends,

anomalies, climatologies and return values for 61 indices• E-OBS version 4.0 daily gridded observational data set

(1950-2010) of precipitation, temperature and pressure, monthly updated

• fact sheets on significant events in recent decades• library of project documentation and papers in peer

reviewed journals
