EURO Doctoral Dissertation Award

The EDDA (EURO Doctoral Dissertation Award) is a EURO instrument. It consists of a prize that is awarded at eachEUROk conference. The purpose of the prize is to distinguish an outstanding doctoral dissertation in OperationalResearch defended in the countries having an OR society that is a member of EURO. It will be awarded at the closingsession of the 28th European Conference on Operational Research in Poznań.

We invite you to widely disseminate this announcement.

Eligibility of applications The EDDA 2016 jury will only consider dissertations in Operational Research defended between 28 February 2015 (i.e.,the deadline for the preceding edition of the prize) and 31 January 2016. The dissertation must have been defended in aUniversity located in a member country of EURO. The author of the dissertation must be a member of a member societyof EURO.

To be considered, a dissertation should be nominated by the supervisor of the thesis (one of them in case of multiplesupervisors). The supervisor of the dissertation is asked to provide the jury with the following information:

1. The text of the dissertation;2. An extended abstract (3 to 5 pages) of the dissertation; this abstract should be written in English and shouldinclude precise keywords;

3. An itemization of the candidate's contribution to each coauthored article if the dissertation contains coauthored articles (i.e., published papers or unpublished manuscripts);

4. If the dissertation is not in English, a paper in English which has been authored or coauthored by the candidateand which describes the core ideas of the dissertation. This paper should preferably have been published in orsubmitted to an international journal;

5. Nomination letters (or reports) from two referees selected by the dissertation supervisor, supporting thesubmission and stating their assessment of why the dissertation should win the award;

6. An uptodate CV of the candidate, including a list of publications.

No nomination will be considered without these items.

Since many doctoral dissertations in OR are defended each year, the jury would like to remind supervisors that onlyoutstanding pieces of work have a reasonable chance of winning the award.

Jury The jury consists of:

Ahti Salo (Finland) chairRichard Hartl (Austria)Bernardo AlmadaLobo (Portugal)Karl Schmedders (Switzerland)Emilio Carrizosa (Spain)

10th International Workshop on Hybrid Metaheuristics HM 2016

Plymouth, UK, 812 June, 2016http://www.dmi.unict.it/hm2016/ [email protected]

General Information The HM Workshops are intended to be an international forum for researchers in the area of design, analysis, andexperimental evaluation of metaheuristics. Metaheuristics, such as simulated annealing, evolutionary algorithms, tabusearch, ant colony optimization, scatter search and iterated local search, are considered stateoftheart methods formany problems. In recent years, however, it has become evident that the concentration on a sole metaheuristic is

rather restrictive. A skilled combination of concepts from different optimization techniques can provide a more efficientbehavior and a higher flexibility when dealing with realworld and largescale problems. Hybrid Metaheuristics are suchtechniques for optimization that combine different metaheuristics or integrate AI/OR techniques into metaheuristics.

Paper Submission http://www.dmi.unict.it/hm2016/call.html

Authors are encouraged to submit novel and unpublished original contributions in one of the topics of the Workshop,and explain how their work sheds light on the fundamental properties of hybrid metaheuristics field, and makes progresson the important open questions. Please prepare your paper in English using the Lecture Notes in Computer Science(LNCS) template.

HM 2016 includes two different types of submission: 1) *regular paper*: 15 pages maximum length in Springer LNCS format, including figures, table & references, and shouldreport on new and unpublished work; 2) *work for oral or poster presentation only* (no page restriction; any format): It should discuss works in progress;new research ideas; works previously published elsewhere (it is essential that a reference to the previous article isclearly cited); and all that may be relevant and fruitful for soliciting discussions at the workshop.

All submissions will be subject to peer review by the program committee, and all accepted submissions are allocatedeither an oral presentation slot or a poster slot with no distinction being made between the submission options.

Important Dates

Paper submission deadline: January 18th, 2016 Paper Notification: February 18th, 2016 Camerready papers deadline: March 18th, 2016 Early registration: March 18th, 2016

A Guide to Graph Colouring: Algorithms andApplications

http://www.springer.com/us/book/9783319257280

Mini Abstract

A new book focusses on graph colouring as an algorithmic problem, with a strong emphasison practical applications.

Main Text

Graph colouring is one of those rare examples in the mathematical sciences of a problem that is very easy to state andvisualise, but that has many aspects that are exceptionally difficult to solve. Indeed, it took more than 160 years and thecollective efforts of some of the most brilliant minds in nineteenth and twentieth century mathematics just to prove thesimple sounding proposition that "four colours are sufficient to properly colour the vertices of a planar graph".

In this book, our aim has been to examine graph colouring as an algorithmic problem, with a strong emphasis onpractical applications. We have studied many of the realworld operational research problems that can be tackled usinggraph colouring techniques, including the seemingly disparate problem areas of producing sports schedules, solvingSudoku puzzles, checking for short circuits on printed circuit boards, assigning taxis to customer requests, timetablinglectures at a university, finding good seating plans for guests at a wedding, and assigning computer programmingvariables to computer registers.

This book is supplemented by an online suite of downloadable code, written in c++. In addition the book also containsinformation on how graph colouring problems might be solved using commercial linear programming software and alsovia the free mathematical software Sage. The book should be of value to researchers, graduate students, andpractitioners in the areas of operations research, theoretical computer science, optimization, and computationalintelligence.

OR/MS Tomorrow : Undergrad Student Competition

https://www.informs.org/Pubs/ORMSTomorrow/UndergraduateStudentCompetition

The coeditors of INFORMS OR/MS Tomorrow (the INFORMS student newsletter) would like to invite yourundergraduate students to participate in the OR/MS Tomorrow Undergrad Student Competition.

In a bid to promote research among undergraduate students in the field of Operations Research and ManagementScience, we invite them to submit a research article that talks about and/or addresses a significant problem/idea in theirrespective fields of research. Essentially, this is a means for providing students with a platform for sharing their researchideas to the INFORMS community via a special forum that provides visibility for their work.

Eligibility and Rules

Student must have been enrolled in an undergraduate degree program for at least one term in the last 12 months. Paper can be projects done for a company as part of a course, internship, or other activity. They may be undergraduateresearch projects done at the home institution. A faculty member may serve as an advisor on a project, but the work should primarily have been done by the students. A faculty member cannot be a coauthor of the paper. No more than three students may be presented as coauthors of a single paper. Only one entry is allowed by a particular author, whether as soleauthor or as coauthor. Each paper must represent an original analysis and must be a part of the author's own work. Previously publishedpapers are not eligible. Optional: Each entry may be accompanied by a cover letter explaining the significance of the presented research. The best submissions will be featured in one of the upcoming issues of OR/MS Tomorrow.

In order to be eligible, the submissions are due by the 15th of December.

All submissions (or clarifications regarding the submissions) may be directed to Siddhartha Nambiar at<[email protected]>

Put your Analytics Skills to the test and win $5,000

Humanity is facing its toughest challenge. Every day, our planet wakes with 200,000 more mouths to feed. Every night,more than 870 million people go to bed hungry. The need to produce more food is already acute, and the world's land,water and energy resources are under unprecedented strain.

As world population increases and the percentage of land devoted to agriculture decreases it becomes vital to improvethe productivity of the agricultural land. Companies like Syngenta strive to improve varieties of their crops to meet thisneed.

Joseph Byrum of Syngenta, the winner of the INFORMS Franz Edelman award, donated his prize to INFORMS to furtheridea creation. In the spirit of such, INFORMS is excited to announce the Syngenta Crop Challenge.

Using soil property data, weather data and seed variety test data, participants are challenged to develop a model topredict what varieties farmers should plant next year to maximize yield.

This contest is being administered by INFORMS.
