Texas Instruments (TI) delivers thefirst open, software-driven EurekaDAB digital radio receiver solution. This enables the most cost-effectiveand power-efficient products in theindustry today.
The TI Eureka Digital AudioBroadcasting (DAB) solution forOEMs includes:
• TI DSP-based digital basebandand TI analog parts
• Evaluation board
• Turn-key reference design
Digital baseband and receiversystemFigure 1 shows the architecture ofthe programmable, TMS320DRE200DSP-based digital baseband andtotal receiver solution. The ETSI 300401-compliant DRE200 DSP base-band performs channel and sourcedecoding on a single chip. In addi-tion, the digital baseband candecode all Eureka modes and per-form user-interface functions. TIalso builds the ADC, DAC, poweramplifier, and various power-man-agement devices for this application.TI’s evaluation board and referencedesign resembles Figure 1.
Features and specifications of theDRE200 DSP baseband are:
• Compatible with standard audioDAC interfaces
• Does not require external memo-ry for DAB operation
• Can interface to an externalmicrocontroller or memory (notrequired for operation)
• Disturbance-free operation dur-
ing multiplex sub-channel recon-figuration or ensemble switch
• Can feed data to external TPEGor MOT decoder and externalmemory
• Baseband <175 mW, standby <1 mA
• 1.6-V operation
• 144-pin TQFP or 144-pin µ*BGA™
• -40 to +85°C operation

Benefits of TI’s total solution• Industry’s lowest cost baseband
and lowest total system BOM
– < $40 for total BOM cost for aDAB receiver
– Integrated baseband leveragingTI’s DSP economy of scale and process technology
– No DRAM/ SRAM, microcon-troller required for audio and PAD decoding
– Software implementation mini-mizes cost to add new features
• Ease of use due to:
– Turn-key reference design:designers can start buildingDAB products in 3–6 months
– Process: license turn-key ref-erence design → customizeuser interface → manufacture
– TI and third-party support cancustomize reference design
– Complete evaluation board
– Local support worldwide
– One-stop shopping for a num-ber of ICs in the receiver
• Software driven, open and scal-able platform gives:
– Flexibility to replace/add anyfeature software modules withTI’s DSP tools (e.g. adding MP3to DAB on the DRE200 DSP).
• Power efficiencies resulting from:
– 175 mW of baseband powerand lowest system power
RoadmapThe DRE200 DSP baseband enableslow-cost basic radios. The futurebaseband products from TI will
redefine digital radio by enablingfeature-rich and integrated endproducts.
