My planned departure from Ghana on August 24 1993 and arrival in Philadelphia th e following day went smoothly. The lovean d fellowship of family surrounded me as soon as th e plane touched down, an d th e first month w as s pe nt with my motherIn Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. Th e first weeks at home ar e valuable for rest and renewal and for preparation for the travelan d speaking that willfollow. They ar e also a time of emotional readjustment to life in th e U.S. In my case that readjustmentstretched ou t Into October. But th e Lord Is with us e ve n w he n w e feel like a duck out of water a nd t he move to Florida toshare a home with Pa t Metz wa s accomplished. T he u se d ca r provided by my sister and brother-in-law made th e transitionm u c h ea s ie r t h an it wo u ld h a v e been o th e r wis e .

T R A V E L A N D S P E A K t N GCountingthe two churches inPAwho heard my report inSeptember and the two inTennessee who received me graciouslyon my way South, I have visited seventeen churches. I wa s tempted to be fearful of traveling alone when I fTrst got homeand heard of all of the violence in Florida, but God ha s protected me and the car from harm or breakdown. InTallahassee, myhost's car was broken intoafter the evening service inwhich Ispoke. The attempted car theft was unsuccessful as wasthe attempted robbery of a ladyinthe parking lotat the same time. Itis a reflection ofmodern times that my host was givenrubber gloves by the police to drivethe car home because there was quite a bitof blood on the dashboard, steering wheel

FAMILY MAT T E R SBeing with family in PA for Christmas was a very specialprivilege. All five of my mother's children and two of theirspouses were with he r on the Tuesday after Christmas. Wehad a little pre-90th birthday party for her since we can't bethere on February 7. The two things that crowned the eventwere mv mother s birthday-candle wish that all of us wouldlove and serve the Lord all our lives and then granddaughter Erin's singing a lovely arrangement of H toJesus I Surrender. My return to Floridawas delayed oneday by a snowstorm; may I be forgiven for regarding onehour of shoveling th e beautiful white stuff a once-in-five-years privilege for a dweller in th e tropics?

W H A T S H A PP EN I NG IN G H A N A ?Lots of good thingsThisyear's enrollment has broken another record- 84students are studying the Word ofGod at Ghana Christian CollegeSome a re d ay students but outside rooms ha d to be rented to accommodate the excess residential men.The Patrick Cline family arrived inSeptember towork with Jeff andSherrieHostetterand Steve Icenogle inthe Brong Ahaforegion. One Dec. 3 Brian Jennings returned from furlough In England to resume his teaching duties inAccra. With the Lord's guidance, thirty acres of land have been found for a new campus a few miles north of Accra. Severalpayments have been made and the college's lawyer has made sure that all the papers on the land are clear.George and Bill Clark of Knoxville, Tenn. visited Ghana for three weeks in September. They worked on a new churchbuilding held leadership seminars In three locations In the brotherhood, and preached evangelisticservices intwo places.A total of 41 people gave their lives to Christ in those meetings.

Are you willing to pray on a regular basis?fyou are, then you can be part ofa group who are committed to praying weekly or oftener) for me and the work ofGhanaChristian College and the Christian Churches brotherhood in Ghana. We need you tothink ofusas part ofyour immediateChristian family and to pray for us by name.We know that every Christian cannot pray for every church and every mission field in theworld regularly except in a generalway. That s why weare asking for a few in each church to commit themselves to prayer for Ghana while others may assumeth e responsibility for other fields.tis not easy to keep in mind folks who live far away and whom you do not see for years at a time. So think carefully andask forGod s guidance before you makesuch a commitment. Ifyou are willing to be a partofthis spiritual supportofGod swork in Ghana, please fill inthe slip below and return itto me before April 1 at the church address in Orlando. Many ofyouare already supportingus in prayer, and we thank God foryou. Ifyoudecide not to make a formal statement of this nature, that is all right. Those of you who fill inthe slip will hear more details of the plan for increased intercession and praise toG o d fo r G h a n a .

    INCIDENTS IN GHANAA January le t ter from th e David Kalb family related stories that underline th e need for prayerfo r a l l hr is t ian w o r k e r s .

In Half Assini Seth Croffey was in trouble along with four other churches forbeating drums when the pagans said not to during a festival lasting about amonth (Seth is an evangelist with the Christian Church there. Seth was takento trial but hired an attorney from Takoradi to defend him on the grounds offreedom of religion in Ghana The Church of Pentecost, the largest of the 5churches in trouble for drumming was attacked by 2,000 pagans and burned tothe ground... The outcome of this isn t sure yet, but we ll keep you posted. In Sagbakope an Italian priest was making trouble for Peter and our church.Peter is having a successful ministry there and this priest went to the chiefand elders to have us thrown out. He called our church a chicken coopV andsaid he was going to bring in clinics and schools, but if the chief didn t getrid of us, he wouldn t do any of that. The people told Peter not to worry thatthey were going to follow Peter anyway... We hope things stay peaceful, butthere is only us and the Catholics in Sagbakope.

Cara Snyder wrote that there had been seven baptisms in the Abeka church inthe three weeks before she wrote. She also said that one lady in the Tema churchwho had been drawn back into idol worship rededicated her life to Christ. Carais going to the Tema church every other week to teach the children duringchurch an d th e ladies af te r ch u r ch .

Theonly time my car failed me was at home on a Monday morning after returning theprevious evening from a very busy weekend. Thank you, Lord,

WHERE ARE THE BOOKS?I have finally made a serious start on collecting books for the library. Twohours spent in a wonderful new/used bookstore in St. Pete yielded a lot ofgood finds. WAR IN NORTHERN GHANA^ , In February a t r ibe called the Konkombas startedDHwnbt Ohm* a war of vengeance against other tribes north ofthe Volta Lake. Many villages have been burned, many, many people have died, and over 150,000 are homeless refugees. Food suppUes have also been burned. The Konkombas came from Togo 200 years ago.were promised but never granted land of their own. They spread out among severalother tribes, worked very hard and have prospered. They are extremely loyal totheir own tribe and are ferocious warriors. It is said that their intention isto fight until they have paramountcy , that is a chief and land of their own.

The fighting is at least 300 miles north of Accra. Ghana Christian Collegeand the missionaries are in no danger. But the Ghanaian missionaries workingin the north were in danger. The two F M evangelists working among the Nchumburu are 0. K., though their villages were burned. Ben Adjani , his wife and/children had to run for safety when bullets were shot through the walls oftheir home. Darko Williams got out safely but was planning to return withbags of used clothing for the refugees. The Kalbs gave him the clothing. Samuel, the preacher at Yeji, just south of the Volta Lake, has 35 refugees, mostlychildren living with hira.Men and women are dying without Christ, and the work of carrying the Gospel lightto them in the North is being hindered. Please pray for the safety of Christiansand the c e s s a t i o n of the war.

SPEAKING AND TRAVELAs planned, the speaking slowed down a little so I could work on books and spendmore time with First Christ ian Church, Orlando. I visited four more churchessince last month s letter and enjoyed return visits to three others. Since Ileave,Orlando April 14, you will hear from me next on the road. My forwardingagent s number is (615) 543-8228 if you need to get in touch with me beforeJune 1. After that I will be with my mother at the above address.BIBLIOGRAPHIES AND BOOKSIt takes a lot of work to prepare lists of books to be specifically searched for,but that IS done. The lists are out where they either produce the purchase ofbooks or tell us which ones are availible in used bookstores. Now i t s time to

order library, catalog cards for those already on hand and get them packed formailing. It s also time for shots at the Orange County Health Dept. )PRAYp: 1) Thanksgiving for the safe arrival of babies to two staff familiesat the college. (2) Request for healing for Sherrie Hostetter whose health isagain not good. (3) For continued safety in my travels.Thank you for your love, prayers and financial and spiritual support.

    DOROTHY EUNSON NEWSLETTERJUNE, 1994247W. Anthony'Aye.%Bloomsbui^ PA ITSlSi;

Dear Friends in Christ,NEW CAMPUS LAND PROBLEMSPrincipal Christian Adjei wrote that the government Lands Department told him that the collegewas being cheated. Theindenture forthe thirty acres purchased fora newcampus lastNovember was only for50years v/ith a possible additional 25years. Christian and others went back to the chief and his elders from whom the land was purchased. Aftermuchnegotiations, the tribal leaders agreed that for an additional 9,000 the land would be ours forever . The revised indenture, signed bythe chief and his elders, is now vwth the Lands Department for processing and registration. Thank God that this

was d i scove red be for e it was to o late.

WAR IN NORTHERN GHANAIn, February, the Konkomba tribe started a war against other tribes in the north. They had never been given land and achieftancy of their own as promised when they migrated from Togo 200 years ago. A quarrel over the sale of a guinea fowlin th e market touched off th e violence fueled by this ancient resentment. The Konkombas say they will continue fightinguntilthey get the land. Hundreds of people have been killed, many thousands have fied other areas of Ghana, and vitalfood supplies have been destroyed. Two Christian Church Ghanaian evangelists escaped the fighting, one narrowly. JeffHostetter and Patrick Cline, working out of Kumasi and Sunyani, are doing what they can to send aid to the refugees. Youmay see an appeal through IDES soon for help for Ghana. Although the government has sent th e army to the north to stopth e fighting, itstill continues, though with lesser intensity. The fighting is between 200 and 300 miles away from th e capitalcity, so neither th e college nor the missionaries ar e in danger. Nevertheless, we pray that the fighting will stop so that themost important work of all, th e preaching of th e Gospel, may continue v/ithout hindrance.

NEW CHURCH IN NKWANTABro. Budu Nyarko, one of three FAMEevangelists in the Nkwanta area, wrote that the three of them cooperated inestablishing a new congregation in February. This makes a total offive congregations inan under-evangelized area.

TROUBLE IN WESTERN REGIONLast October the traditional authorities in the Western Region of Ghana a region is like a state) asked churches not to playtheir drums in church while th e traditional worshippers celebrated the festival known as Kundum . The churches saw thatthe origins of th e festival were demonic and so refused to obey the edict. Some churches were burnt, pastors werearrested and taken to court. The case was taken from one court to another but Is still not settled. Only the Methodists andCatholics can worship in their buildings. All other churches mustworship in houses. The Christian Church in Half Assini isamong those being persecuted. Their drums were seized and they were asked to pay some money to get them back. Theyh av e r e fu s ed to do so

SUCCESSFUL EASTER CONVENTIONBe tween 400 a nd 5 00 Chris t ians f rom 41congregations in the brotherhood gathered in onetown fo r th e annual nat ional conven t ion Easterweekend. See Pictures) All reports were full of praiseabout it. Bible Studies in various language andgender groups were held in th e morning v/lthevangelistic services in the evenings. One preacherwrote, Itis the first time to see these (sic) many oldag e especially old women dancing to the praise ofGod as a band performs and Itell you they were allawake through the services while young men preachpowerful and convincing sermons...t here was muchcooperation from all. Even though a large numberhad gone from Abeka, about 80 people, including lotsof visitors, attended worship back home on Easter

Christian Adjei wrote that when the mason began to set the property markers in place, there was adiscrepancy in the maps hewas using. tseems that another faction is claiming that the land belongs to them. This, inspite ofgreat care and prayer. Such counterclaims canbeemotionally, spiritually, and financially exhausting. Christian wrote, have been told that the other faction isjust trying tomake troubleand hope this isso and that this will be soon be over. But in themeantime do your best to get as many people as possible to pray. Ihavetold the students todo this and take it to their churches, too. Dear Friends in Christ,Minor surgeiy foradiagnostic testunder full anesthesia onMonday before I leftheU.S. wasanunexpected interruption. On Wednesday at 10 a.m. the doctogave methe O.K. to retum to Ghana. I left Bloomsburg Thursday morning andflew out ofPhiladelphia that night.

Aftera week of woric togetmyhouse inorder, 1laidthat task aside and spent a goodweekin the library. I was pleasedthat so manyof the books I had collectedor ordered had ah-eady arrived. I will continuethere most of this month.Already I am immersed in Ghana culture: attended a wake-keeping, accompanied the Women s Fellowship after church to visit abereaved member, was part of a smallgroupof men and women whovisited a Christian brother in the hospital, and took visitingpreacher Joel Stauffer to witoess a babynaming ceremony at 6 a.m. last Sunday. Thechurch groupof fortyhired a mammy truckto go to the wake-keeping. I was lucky to rideon the paddedseat nextto the driverinsteadof on the wooden benches in back.

POST W NEWSTheKonkombas, thetribe whostartedthe warin northern Ghana, are backin their fields to take advantage of the rainy season. Someoftheother tribes still don ttnist theKonkombas andareafraid to retum totheir farms. Continue to pray for rehabilitation in northernGhana. David Kalb and Joel visited one of the Christian church evangelists in northern Ghana and encountered no difficulty.

LAND UPDATEPrincipal Christian Adjei reported that the trouble about thenew campus property comes from another subgroup oftheGa tribe. Weboughtthe land from Village A. Village B, from theother subgroup, claims thatpartof theplothasbelonged to them formanygenerations and that Village A had no right to sell itto us. Therefore they smashed some ofthecement property markers that themason had setinplace. After much palaver . Village A has said that if they can settle the dispute with Village B,weshall gettheoriginal 30.9 acres. Ifnot, they will give usanother plot of30acres ontheother side oftheroad. This may beGod s way ofgivingusan even better location, butitwill take some time to work eveiything out. The Kalb family left August 9 for furlough; David wilbe working hard to raise money to build the campus.

MOTORCYCLE RECOVEREDThe stol^ motorcycle was recovered in Togo, the country toQiana s east. The two young men finally pleaded guilty to its theft whenthey saw the evidaice against thanpiling up. Ninety-nine students have completed three weeks of classes. Some asusual, were a fe w days late, an d has b ee n t he case for several years several of th e in-coming s t ud ent s are fromth e LIberian refugee camp. I have been assigned only six hours of classes first term, so that I ca n continue in th elibrary. My classes ar e only for degree students wh o require somewhat less patience: it seems my temperamentis well-known. Ou r a nnua l P raye r Emphasis Week is already history, since it occurs in th e third week. We havema de up our minds to plan next year s before th e school year is over because t he h as ty planning shows. Myfavorite part of the w ee k w ere t he prayer meetings with our a dvis ory groups. It is possible to develop closerrelationships an d to get to know a fe w more students that yo u don t have in your classes. My group meets in myliving room - all fourteen of us .

The village chief and elders brought th e site plan for th e alternative 30 acres. Th e Lands Department sa y the titleis clear, so th e sellers ar e preparing th e new indenture for us. T he y h av e a ls o instructed is th e collect th e cementproperty markers that remained unbroken and takethem to t he ne w site. We thank God for progress made towardthe final solution of a very sticky situation. Continue to pray till the last papers are signed and registered and theproperty markers installed. And then keep praying that God will provide the funds to build this year we ar e rentingtw o o u t s i d e halls a n d chambers to accommodate th e m e n .

Since myretum, I have leamed oftwo new church-planting efforts inAccra alone. One is lead by a Christian Churchmember who has returned to Ghana from Abidjan, Ivory Coast and is also a students at th e college. The otherattempt is led by one of last year s graduates. They will have a tough stnjggle with no one to help them financially.Pray that Go d will provide an d that His Word will no t return unto Him void.Myfirst village church visit last month with my companion Kwame Amevor who does much of th e driving, wa s toour good friends in Mayera, just te n miles from Accra. I led in some English hymns and Kwame led th e rest of thesongs prayers and communion service. The local leader, Bro. Eddie, also asked me to help counse l a youngcouple after the service. Village leaders have a lonelytime bearing the cares of a church. Fortunately, Bro Eddieis blessed with a committed capable wife. There have bee n so many new members a dded to our local congregation in the last year that it will requireconcentrated effort to get to know them.

COLLEGE FLOWS SMOOTHLYWe are pastmid-terms already. Myexam in Christian Educationproduced disappointing results, but the essay writing of myEnglish class pleases me very much. In faculty meetingswe usepart of our time to go over some preliminary architectural drawings and specifications of the proposed new campus

and make suggestions for changes It s fun and dreaming is free.Last month Iwrote that we had the site plan for the new campus land. That s a mistake: we do not have it, and thatiswhat is delayingthe preparation ofan indenture. Ifyou get frustrated hearing of these delays, remember that weare just as frustrated. Sometimes we can t even understand exactly what the problem is; it is not an admired traitin Ghana to be open and forthright as Americans often prize themselves in being. Our principal and others aredoing their best to accomplish something within the system. Our part is to support them in prayer. We can onlyrespond to what the chief and elders tell us or guess what is really going on.

    TWO SPECIAL VISITS

Last weekend, the Brights, Brian Jennings and I drove to Kumasi and Sunyani and spent time with PatrickandHeather Cline Steve Icenogle, Karen Hoel(intem) and two elders of the Sunyani Christian Church. InKumasi weenjoyed a Chinese mealout, a Saturdaymorning prayerand discussion, and two more delicious meals. Continuingto Sunyani, we enjoyed meals and fellowship with Steve and Karenand two elders and families. We attendedchurchwiththe Sunyani congregation on Sunday before our retum tripto Accra. Itis a dangerous two lane roadand partof the joumeywas after dari^ and through rain. We were allthankful for a safe joumeyand Iwas gratefulthat Tim did the bulk of the driving. We used my tmck because it has the best A/C.The other visitwas one Idid notmake. All the arrangements were made for mymonthlytrip to an outlyingchurch -this timeto Tema. Brian Jenningswas to be the preacherand was countingon a ridewith me. The Tema church sdrums hadbeen repaired in Accraand had been brought to my house forus to take along. The wife ofone ofourteachers had longwanted to visit the Tema church and planned to go with us. There were volunteer tomatoseedlings dugup from the flower bed to take to the Tema preacherto add to his farm. Iwoke upon that Sundayfeeling very weakand full ofaches from a cold Ihad started catching onSaturday. But how could we notgo? Igot out a foam matand pillow to take along and lie down inthe preacher s housewhile the rest were inservice.Later however one ofthe young men in the churchwhohas a driver s licenseagreed to accompany Kwame whohas only a leamer s permit and all those responsibilities were fulfilled while Istayedhomeand sleptail moming.A trip will haveto be madeanothertime to fellowship with the congregation and see the progress on their building. As it turned out, I had malaria and didn t know it. Once treated, 1got well in a hurry.

    FOR CONTRIBUTORS AND PRAYER PARTNERS

Dear Friends in ChristI to old earth because of our sin Praise be to theI Father who loved us so much He sent His Son to be bom to liveand to die on th is earth . Thanks be to God fo r J es us who was

mR willing tolaydown His life for us May you befilled with joyandp t Orchestra Ghina gratitude as you pondcr again this hristmastime themercy Godhas shown us. My house is decorated in traditional ways, a

Christmas dinner is planned, and the church children are working hard on their Christmas program. May God help usnot to lose sight of our sin and His grace in the midst of our customs.

    COLLEGE TERM COMPLETED

First term is over - all but the marking of exams, figuring the grades and preparation of nest term s syllabi. Wesqueezed the exams into three days and actually shared our closing communion service and Christmas feast onNovember 30.

TH LAND - AN IN H OF PROGR SS

The college has now secured the services of a surveyor independent of the chief and elders from whom we have boughtthe property. He is preparing the site plan and will prepare the indenture next week. Keep praying against any moreimnecessary delays.

    THE SAWMILL IS TRYING

In Ghana the expression you are trying means you are doing something worthwhile. The sawmill has made its firstrepayment on the loan taken to set it up. They have also moved from the old site and are in operation on the newrented site. There are still problemswith a secondhand forklift and they still have to borrowsomemoney locally tokeep going until the next export ship, but the hole is not as deep as it was. Thank you for your prayers sofar - pleasecontinue.

    THE CHURCHES

The third Sundayin NovemberI drove Christian Adjei, one of the elders, and the president of the Women sFellowshipto visit the Honi church. That is where our Accra regional conventionwill be held. Every bench in theschoolroom th^ use was filled and they said many of the members were absent. The young preacher is doing wellleading the church. Last Sunday I visited the Mayera church to teach them some Christmas songs. Tim Bright wasthe visiting preacher. We were each given a fresh pineapple by one of the membere.THANK GOD for Twyla Bright s recovery, PRAY that men and women will be won to Christ during the regionalChris tmas conventions.
